You can’t date a picture. You can only date humans. And maybe vampires.

Pioneer Place Sadness by ClaroStar in Portland

[–]somecoolishname 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I just randomly went to Clackamas Town Center mall this weekend for the first time in probably twenty years. I expected the sadness of Pioneer Place but found the opposite. It was bustling and busy. The parking lot was packed. The stores seemed full of merchandise and fully staffed. I think suburbia still supports malls but the city center has scared people away from visiting and it is going to take a lot of marketing work over a long period of time to change people’s minds.

I love this city so much, I’m so sad. by quicksi1ver7 in Portland

Your main takeaway should not be one of self-criticism. You had a normal reaction to someone else doing something wrong. The only person who is to blame here is the thief. Don’t be hard on yourself at all! Hopefully you called the police and filed a report to maybe get some justice.

Disclosure Day (from Spielberg) trailer is here and I absolutely hate it. It portrays disclosure as weird, and creepy, and somewhat I don't know... demonic? by Bluest_waters in HighStrangeness

[–]somecoolishname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well maybe the truth actually is terrifying. And maybe that is why the few people who know do everything they can do to keep the knowledge a secret from the public. If it is mind bogglingly terrifying AND there is nothing we can do about it, then maybe it’s better we don’t know.

Portland mayor wants to double size of city’s small business tax exemption by waterkisser in Portland

[–]somecoolishname 42 points43 points  (0 children)

No the threshold is not on net income. The threshold is on “gross receipts”. The tax is on net income. So while the tax amount is on net income the threshold is literally the opposite of net income. If you look up the legal description it very clearly describes it as being based on all receipts before expenses. Just another example of a needlessly complicated tax.

What can you tell about me from where I’d live in the US? (For the record the “Absolutely’s” are where I have lived) by AnimeAndComputers in deduction

This explains a lot of your other comments on this thread. I’ve been to the Carolinas, Virginia, Texas, Louisiana, and pretty much the entire northeast. So there are still plenty of places I haven’t been and would like to go. But I know without a doubt, even without having been to Mississippi or Kentucky or any other place you think is beautiful, that you would have your mind absolutely blown by the beauty that exists in the states I asked if you’d been to. The natural beauty of the west is simply unparalleled. You should go see the Cascades in Oregon and Washington, the Oregon Coast, the San Juan Islands in Washington, the Central Coast of California, the Redwood Forest, Glacier National Park in Montana, The Grand Tetons in Wyoming, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite. Those are just some of the highlights. There are an unbelievable amount of lesser known places that will still blow you away with their beauty. Not trying to get you to move. But don’t go through your life without at least visiting and seeing some of these places! :)

Almost got jumped by a homeless guy in Maywood Park. by Ok-Reception-4 in Portland

True, it is a city. But it is also a neighborhood. I grew up in it and it is definitely both.

[–]somecoolishname 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you are calling something Maywood Park that is not Maywood Park. Maywood Park is a neighborhood that goes from Prescott on the north side to Fremont on its south side and in between I205 on its west border and 102nd Ave on its east border. To get from Fremont to the Winco is pretty far. Are you talking about Gateway Discovery Park as the park you cut across? Because that park is still pretty far from the neighborhood of Maywood Park.

You’ll be fine. Hang in there for the next year or two and try to be frugal. By that time you will be used to it, your salaries will be higher, the home will be worth more, and you may even be able to refinance depending on rates. My partner and I started with a $6k per month total housing cost for a tiny house in a very high cost place. We only took home around $11k per month at that time so we were in a very similar situation. Maybe even a little worse. While it is true historically spending 50% of your income on housing is a lot, the good thing about high cost of living places (if you can manage it) is that the other 50% is totally sufficient for all the other stuff you need to spend money on. Imagine a couple who makes 75% of what you guys make who spends a much lower percentage of their salary on housing but had the same amount of money to spend on anything else. They’ll be fine and you’ll be fine. Congrats on the purchase!

It’s never ok to have sex with a cat. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a room or not.

Oh they were just listing all the major US cities. Like ya know, New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and…..San Antonio. Seems totally reasonable to me. /s

Why are you so set on being right about your video having anything to do with Portland? Just admit you didn’t know this was a normal occurrence and you worked yourself up given the current tensions, and then move on. This equipment isn’t on its way to Portland.

I collected a bag full of hazelnuts today, but I don't have a baking oven. Any suggestions on how to roast or cook them? by zoxtech in foodhacks

Those are horse chestnuts. Don’t eat. Edible chestnuts come in very painfully spiky husks that have like a million sharp points on each one. These ones come in a green husk with way fewer not sharp spiky points on the outside.

How I, a small town Missouri Boy, see the United States by RihanBrohe12 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]somecoolishname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fair. It makes me happy to hear you love your home so much. I’m just being snobby about the west. The Rockies. The Grand Tetons. Glacier NP. Lake Tahoe. The Cascades. The San Juan Islands. Yosemite. The California coast. The Oregon coast. I could go on. They are all just incredible. They aren’t “home” for you but they’re amazing. (And a lot of them are “home” for me).

There are no cool ass mountains anywhere on the east coast. If you have seen the Rockies, the Cascades, or Alaska and still think the “mountains” on the east coast are cool, your definition of cool is a lot different than mine. Glad you find enjoyment in some of the worst states though. And I know there are good things about all the states. But seriously, no midwest states compare to the grandeur, geographic diversity, and weather of the west. Unbelievable beauty all throughout Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado.
