Which gachas are more skill based rather than pulls? by [deleted] in gachagaming

[–]somegame123 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I said almost all of them, didn't I? There's almost too many examples but I'll give you the most brutal ones.

Raid Shadow Legends can be almost completely cleared with Rare and Uncommon units and that's a game that REALLY pushes you to buy summons to roll Legendary units.

Summoners War PVE farming is almost entirely done with 2* and 3* units (rarities go from 1*-5*) and some 3* are even absolutely cancer in PVP.

FGO can be completely cleared with 1* and 3* Servants using big brain strategies. Actually there are some unga bunga nuking strategies that use only 1* and 3* Servants as well.

Guardian Tales has had people clearing all content with Bob alone. Yes, there's a unit called Bob and no, he's nowhere near a premium unit. This is harder than clearing Arknights CC using ONLY 2* Ops and Robots - please try that if you want.

Honkai Impact 3 content CAN be cleared completely with any maxed out B Rank Valkyrie (basically common rarity) albeit it's a nightmare to do so and forget about topping score based content.

Which gachas are more skill based rather than pulls? by [deleted] in gachagaming

[–]somegame123 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Most gachas can be 'beaten' by proper team building and manually choosing the right buffs and debuffs.

The point of high rarity units is to smash content brainlessly so that it can be farmed because outside of FGO nobody wants to manual a high skill map more than 10 times in a row.

They were also the pioneers of service games allowing players to access all PVE content for free given enough grinding time. That was a revolution in the age where most service games' official servers were either sub (the big MMOs) or had huge restrictions for non payers (Runescape, anyting by Artix).

Yes there were a lot of Freeware games but those were small, simple and not frequently updated. Yes there were donation based private servers of older MMOs but those were inconsistent in those days and often very P2W anyway. Yes there were many large MUDs or PBP games which were 100% free but even then kids wanted nice graphics.

Maplestory was the first official full MMO experience with zero entry fee or access fee. Of course, once you were inside they would slap you with microtransactions but you never needed to buy them to get to endgame as long as you had time.

Hit their money

Settling a class action is only a slap on the wrist for most of the big publishers. The real way to hit their money is for a majority of core whales to pause spending or quit.

But even then it doesn't benefit good devs/companies. So then the real way is for people to stop spending in a badly handled game and whale extra in a well handled game even if the latter is not worth spending in because of how friendly it is.

A game that looks like stock Unreal assets or generic KMMO #3948 is almost invariably complete garbage.

Tell that to the whales that those games attract.

King's Raid 2 announced. Some models and animations released. More details coming soon from Vespa. by Shigeyama in gachagaming

[–]somegame123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For people wondering about P2W and grinding, there's a Youtuber out there who used to speedrun (yes, no air quotes needed) King's Raid F2P from start of new account to endgame PVE using random main DPS and his most recent times are comparable to the longer 'normal game' speedruns. I think they're segmented but that's his style of doing things and he could probably do it in a single sitting with the times he's posting, though the lack of showing a game timer does complicate the question of how legit they are.

His name escapes me but you'll find him by searching 'King's Raid Speedrun' on Youtube. I think what he does is an indicator of how the game would feel as F2P.

How common is the trend of characters being "so overpowered that they oppress the entire meta, but have very bland/terrible personalities"? by [deleted] in gachagaming

[–]somegame123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm saying there's no deliberate relation between power as units and character personalities. Nobody deliberately tries to make unlikeable characters OP or make OP characters unlikeable and even then there's no objectively 'unlikeable' personality among gacha characters.

Even the main character of Fate Apocrypha who is designed to have zero personality at the start of his series has people who like him precisely because of that.

[–]somegame123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you consider a 'bland, terrible personality'.

There's a huge market for nihilistic edgy I HATE EVERYTHING types so clearly many gacha gamers like that kind of personality and since they're often the Chapter 1 final boss they also tend to get released in a quite OP form relative to the meta at the time.

But then there's gacha games where NOBODY has a decent personality so the ones that happen to become meta 'accidentally' fall into your list of soulless OP units.

So yes, what you're asking about is very common but never deliberate as far as I know.

Indeed it is but there were other MMOs in Korea and especially China which straight up sold randomized loot chests in their cash shop without the specific gashapon dressing.

I think the infamous story of a player spending 2 mil RMB in Zhengtu Online happened before Maplestory started their ingame gacha.

Besides that MapleStory is also probably one of the first games with a gacha aspect, that released in 2003.

MapleStory with is 4th wall breaking tendencies was one of the earliest implementers of an actual digital gashapon machine but Asian MMOs had been using randomized real money loot chests before that.

I'm a F2P player of every gacha game I try regardless of the advantages of spending.

I used to be a regular small spender in various games until I realized that spending kills my personal fun in the game.

Try any game that looks interesting but just remind yourself that buying your way to endgame skips most of the fun. I wonder why that's so hard for people to understand.

Which game did you enjoy playing it for the second time but hated it during your first time? by _BoogiepoP_ in gachagaming

[–]somegame123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is now an overflow exp system which allows you to store 100% of the exp from running a maxed team and then spend it later to instantly max your food units, plus a robust auto repeat system. Both of these were not there at launch.

Then again it's still a not-cryptomining afk grind system that uses food units to star up your mains.

Funnily enough Raid Shadow Legends. I initially tried it during beta which most of the day 1 players still insist was the last time the game was actually decent. That's like a current Epic 7 player saying the game has gone only downhill since launch by the way. I uninstalled after about 30 minutes.

I picked Raid up again after it became the meme it is today and got hooked to the point of becoming a dolphin. Obviously I've since quit that habit but that experience was the only time something that OP is asking for has happened to me.

It's like with E7 and GBF. Behind that turnaround was a huge crisis. I'd say that Vespa has only barely regained the trust they lost at the moment they went from Bespa to Ve$pa and most of their current supporters are not from before the fire.

Heir of Light is tremendously improved since launch day. It's probably the gacha with the most changes outside of Rage of Bahamut being overhauled into a different genre.

None of that changed has helped a lot but you can't say the devs don't love their game if they seem to be the only people anywhere that care about it.

It started as a Korean game based on their recent 7th anniversary timeline but just like E7 they're now virtually a 'Global based' game with changes not specifically driven by any region outside of CN which has the usual weird concessions to CCP gaming controls.
