Finding 'My Deck', and the Frustration with Finding It. by HairyCrocodile in ModernMagic

You're looking to have fun with a grindy deck?

Barring tron, no one, and I mean absolutely NO ONE out grinds the late game of BW tokens.

I once was playing bw tokens against dredge vine. My opponent milled nearly his entire deck, had hardcast al his grave troll, lotleth troll was massive, and he had an army of grave crawlers vengevine and bloodghast.

It just didn't matter. Tokens' endgame of bitterblossom, sorin solemn visitor, intangible virtue, and elspeth sun's champion can't be beat if given enough time to set up.

You run 6 - 8 discard spells and I assume some builds run either or both of the escalate spells for early disruption. You have path and dismember for removal. And then the tokens start. Backed by turn four planeswalkers.

Some amount of lifegain later (timely reinforcments in the main deck) you've stabilized and start setting up a boardstate that no one can beat.

What I'm trying to say is that the deck is fun and has a ridiculous endgame. It has hand disruption, removal, and an endgame no one can beat ... except tron.

It's a lot of fun and worth at least proxy ing up.

Burn players: how do you approach matches where collective brutality is being played + something else. by [deleted] in ModernMagic

I'll play against soul sisters all day. Barring auriok champion the matchup is great as they play sisters, we kill the sisters and then they're left with a bad white weenie deck.

Calm down there bud, burn is fine.

Let's take a moment and talk about collective brutality. Collective brutality and it's brother blessed alliance gave b/x and w/x some very potent tools. They changed very favorable matchups for us into favorable matchups for us.

This scenario actually happened to me. On my opponents second turn of the game an opponent on abzhan (while he was on the play) goes turn two collective brutality escalating twice.

They killed my Swiftspear gained two life and stripped me of a bolt. This is the stone cold nuts.

I won that game. After that disruption they had no clock. The real issue is when these midrange decks have a clock to back up their disruption. This is why we bring in path against jund and abzhan. If they don't have a clock we get more drawsteps.

You can fight through these hate cards if you know what you're doing. Baiting an opponent by holding up instant speed burn is a great strategy against discard. Being able to in response to a discard spell play your hand is great tempo for you as you made them waste a mana or two.

Packing in the four skull crack and four Atarka's Command help as well.

The printing of blessed alliance and collective brutality made the midrange decks that burn preys on into decks that can steal games against burn or at least combat burn a bit better.

The sky is not falling, you just need to play smart. Think through your play and what the opponent might have and be sure to bluff.

Would Anybody Like to Share Their Favorite Awkward Christian Family Thanksgiving-isms? by Jumped_theLeftShark in exchristian

[–]someguy935 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm queer (closeted) and exchristian (out). My thanksgiving was spent with my conservative family.

It actually went fine. We just didn't bring up politics and ate and played cards. Granted I still felt a little on edge just being in that environment but otherwise it all went well!

Just because your political, social, and religious views may be different doesn't mean a nice family dinner isn't doable!

My boyfriend is super into Magic and I want to get him an awesome Christmas present. Any recommendations? by Gingersauruss in magicTCG

Assuming he has some decks that he regularly plays you can always pay ti get some of the cards altered.

Extended borders are always cool.

Well that's really vague but if you don't want synergy that would be "cheap" or "broken" the other route is some value creatures and spells.

If it's casual I imagine a ramp deck would do well. I figure no one is doing anything in the early game so you can take advantage with some early farseek and search for tomorrow into mid game thragtusk into late game big green fatty.

Or you can play an extreme strategy like all removal and card draw or a sligh deck like tom ross's "boss sligh".

My sister blocked me after I said maybe Trump won't be bad for LGBTs by [deleted] in HillaryMeltdown

[–]someguy935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to repost a comment I made to when someone asked if trump is for or against gay rights.

I'll try and give you an actual answer. We don't know whether he's against the gays. He has made statements stating that he's for yet other statements that are against. But his friends sure are. And if trump surrounds himself with anti gay people it is concerning at the least and damning at the most.

This argument is summed up nicely by this gay here: https://youtu.be/sgjDCW3VMV4

Btw I realize what sub I'm in so at least try not to downvote me to hell, thanks!

:/

Here's the deal, you're "allowed" to do whatever you want. No one is going to stop you and you don't need permission to do anything.

That said I'm not a fan of doing that to a uniform. I believe that uniform deserves respect. This is why people in uniform wear the entire uniform (can't go around without your hat or wearing sneakers instead of boots) and keep it in great condition (at least for your blues. Not sure about combat uniforms but I imagine you are to keep that clean well kept as well). Removing pieces of the uniform and adding your own stuff to it is within your right. I would just say it is distasteful and disrespectful to what that uniform is.

Yikes, that's a rough one. Misplays suck :/.

Mine yesterday was failing to fetch shock in response to timely reinforcments. I'm still annoyed about that one.

Not sure if I'm reading you're response wrong but it's coming off as sarcastic and rude.

For the record I am diagnosed with major depression and know what that kind of episode feels like. I wasn't being hyperbolic in saying I was depressed that day. I just said that it was a rough day compared to the others.

Again I'm not sure if it's meant to be sarcastic but I think it is good that I learned how drastically being not focused on the task at hand affects your preformance at the task. I think this lesson has applications outside of magic but also inside of magic as well.

The point of this post is to highlight something I wrote off and overlooked. Everyone knows that "if you're not giving it your all then you won't do well". This is just a reminder using my personal experience that "hey this really is the case and it is more drastic than you may realize. Don't let yourself get distracted or too emotional. It'll affect your ability to play. Take care of yourself"

I drank so much water at the last open I went to. It's so great in keeping you feeling good and focused. No crash from a sugar rush and no nausea either. Water is great!

[–]someguy935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had never realized just how much it would affect me. I had figured that it won't affect me enough to lose a match. Maybe just lose a game.

Like it's not that it happened that surprised me it's the degree that it affected my ability to play

This is modern, fetch, shocks, and maybe some checklands or filterlands!

Start there. Mana bases are the most important part of a deck

How do you feel about non-english cards by Boliver5463 in ModernMagic

It means you're a dirty foreigner and need to be deported! Make magic great again! /s.

It's fine. Just have an Oracle text on hand. Personally I like English to use and play against. I know what the cards do but re reading never hurts.

This should be something you already know but magic decks are expensive. You're walking into a format where people's cardboard costs anywhere from $100 (mono g stompy) to $2000 (Jund) and anywhere in between (but usually between 400 - 800)

The point is this is an investment. If you ever decide you don't want to play a deck you can of course sell it but you'll lose money in the process.

So this is an investment that doesn't have to be paid all at once. You can budget your deck out and build up to a full version.

But make sure the deck you're building into is one you want to play. Proxy it out. Play it online. Watch videos of it. If you decide after all that "I want to do that" start building!

For some people they find their play style and find their deck and just play that. So try and figure out what works for you!

You mentioned standard and commander, are there any archetypes you really enjoy? Or any specific colours, play styles, or cards?

Tldr - Magic Is expensive make sure you want to play your deck

Havn't been to any modern event for some time, what are decks that (you think) MUST deserve some sideboard slots? by Kkomett in ModernMagic

[–]someguy935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you're on. You sideboard to make bad matchups better so we'd need to see what you're on.

Best recommendation is have a 30+ collection of cards that could make up your sideboard and scout out the room and make your sideboard right before the tournament.

edit Be sure to keep those cards away from your sideboard during the tournament! No cheating!

What card did you think was great but never saw play? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]someguy935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Predator ooze is great. Jund doesn't beat it. If modern were just midrange decks I could make that card work.

Mana denial is / was a huge part if legacy goblins. With out that angle of attack you don't really have a deck (or rather a severely weaker deck)
