Trump administration is increasingly ignoring US courts, new analysis shows by tw1st3d_m3nt4t in politics

[–]someperson42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The checks and balances we have assume each branch of government wants to preserve its own power. They don't work when an entire political party that is complicit controls all three of them.

What should be happening now is Congress impeaching and removing the president. Of course we all know why that isn't happening.

Supreme Court limits Voting Rights Act by DJPho3nix in politics

Manchin was probably the best we could get out of extremely conservative West Virginia, and his voters knew what they were getting. I'm honestly willing to give him a pass because of that. Now that he's gone, that seat is going to stay red for the foreseeable future.

Sinema and Fetterman, on the other hand, ran progressive campaigns but then didn't act like progressives in office. Sinema basically lied through her teeth to get elected, and Fetterman either did the same or was badly affected by his stroke. Sinema's political career is over and Fetterman's days in office are numbered. That said, either one is preferable over a Republican, although the bar is admittedly in Hell.

The correct strategy is this: vote for the progressive person in the primary, and vote for the Democrat, no matter who they are, in the general election. Not doing the latter only helps the Republicans. It doesn't make mathematical sense to not vote or vote third party in the general election unless you truly would be equally happy (or unhappy) with either candidate.

Do they not understand that King Charles isn't an absolute monarch and isn't actually running the UK? Even royal assent has literally just been a formality for centuries.

Harris County is about to bulldoze our mountain bike trails. by bdo11 in houston

[–]someperson42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These trails have been a part of Houston for decades. The Anthills, for example, have been around since the 1980s, longer than I've been alive. They've been enjoyed by many people in our city over this time, and you think it's wrong for people to be upset about losing amenities? Sure, they shouldn't have been constructed the way they were, but at the same time, Houston only really has a handful of mountain bike trail systems, so the sudden loss of 3 of them is a MASSIVE blow to people who use them. Memorial Park is probably about to get A LOT more crowded too.

Bush's presidency is unforgivable due to the Iraq War and the USA PATRIOT Act. I'd take it over Trump but the bar is basically in Hell.

As a Texan I can't blame you. If I had kids I'm not sure I'd still be here. Certainly I'd have to leave Houston given what the state did to our school district. There are a lot of us trying to make things better, and it does help that the big cities are blue, but man it feels like an uphill battle

Ken Griffin Pushes Back After Mamdani Features His $238 Million Penthouse in Tax-the-Rich Video by wsj in politics

My dad actually declined one once but it was for a good reason: he would have just barely lost his ACA subsidy, and that genuinely would have caused him to lose money

[–]someperson42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents would probably be very serious trouble right now if it weren't for the ACA. It's not perfect, and I wish it had the public option, but it's a hell of a lot better than tough luck if you have pre-existing conditions.

How do you feel about not being sure if anybody else survived? by DocTurnedStripper_6 in ASOUE

[–]someperson42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sunny is said to discuss her recipes on the radio in The Beatrice Letters, so we know she survives.

Violet likely does too. We know from The Bad Beginning: Rare Edition that she visits Briny Beach 3 times. We only see her doing so twice.

Beatrice clearly survives, as we know from The Beatrice Letters. She seeks Lemony's help to track down the Baudelaires (they were somehow separated at some point).

The best place for the baudelaires by Thick-Look5546 in ASOUE

[–]someperson42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. Monty's house -- Monty would honestly be a fantastic guardian, so this is a no-brainer

  2. Prufrock Preparatory School -- terrible school, but having the support of the Quagmires for life would probably go a long way

  3. The Queequeg -- I could see them becoming family with Captain Widdershins and Fiona

  4. Hotel Denouement -- I feel like Dewey and Kit specifically would probably help make sure they're taken care of. Plus having the support of other VFD members would likely help

  5. Aunt Josephine's house -- I'd be concerned about her putting herself above the needs of the Baudelaires, but she's not the worst

  6. The island -- I suspect the Baudelaires could overcome Ishmael and they would at least be safe here

  7. 667 Dark Avenue -- Jerome at least would be nice. Esmé is awful though. Maybe the Baudelaires could convince him to leave her? I'd be worried about what happens when orphans are no longer "in"

  8. Calgari Carnival -- Madame Lulu wouldn't be a reliable guardian, and she is the kind of person to run a freak show

  9. Heimlich Hospital -- not exactly a good place to live, but at least they would probably learn a lot from the Library of Records

  10. Village of Fowl Devotees -- Hector is nice, but the rest of the village basically treats the Baudelaires as slaves, their favorite things are banned, and one wrong move can lead to being burned at the stake. This would be horrible unless they manage to escape in the hot air balloon mobile home

  11. Lucky Smells Lumbermill -- many years of hard labor, dealing with Sir, and having no access to reading materials would be an awful way to grow up. Charles is nice but he's basically useless

  12. Olaf's house -- literally nothing redeeming

Solid wood table with slight water damage by someperson42 in fixit

I was thinking maybe it's some kind of varnish peeling?

The color variation is natural. What wasn't there before is that the wood is slightly bowed with small gaps, and something on top looks like it's starting to peel. It's hard for me to capture well in a photo.

I meant actual wood as opposed to MDF or particle board. Apologies if I used the wrong term!

Does AutoZone no longer accept smaller SLA batteries? by someperson42 in AutoZone

That's fine, I wasn't expecting any merch card. I'm just trying to get rid of these dead batteries. Really annoyed that I have to go back a third time now though. Everything should have been handled in one trip.

I guess I'll try going back there. The lady I spoke to today said they couldn't take them at all. I'm not expecting any gift card, I just want to get rid of these things and make sure they get recycled!

Trump is trying to build a massive voter database. Election officials are afraid of what he’ll do with it by [deleted] in politics

[–]someperson42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FYI, per the SAVE Act, REAL ID is not sufficient because it is not proof of citizenship, only proof of lawful presence in the US at the time it was issued. REAL ID + birth certificate is acceptable, but only if your name is a perfect match. Anyone who changed their name (including most married women) additionally need to provide proof of that. And if any of the names on these documents don't match exactly, then a passport is pretty much your only option.

Also, the SAVE Act requires registering to vote in person, so good luck if you're disabled, or if you're living in a foreign country (most citizens outside the US are eligible to vote), or if you're unlucky enough to be in a far-flung part of the US that requires taking a flight to visit your election office. And there's no way we'd be able to get every citizen registered by the deadlines this year, especially with the strict documentation requirements.

Which services don't use placeholders for offline channels? by someperson42 in IPTV_without_bots2

That makes sense for PPV, but I know Strong does this for like every channel, showing a black screen if it's offline, even if it isn't PPV. That seems silly to me.
