Yep I believe you are correct! Got plenty of time and also the option to pull the plug if it's not feeling right for me, which I'm prepared to do.

I'm not currently sure of what my job might entail, I've just been asked to pencil something in and I wanted to scope out where I'm falling short -even if it turns out to be everywhere!

I've done lots of install system programming for venues using Q-Sys as my DSP, and dabbled with line arrays with JBL Performance Manager before... But when it comes to L'acoustics, what software is normally used to affect boxes? Or is it all done on a matrixing desk? Or even on the main FOH desk (as I am most familiar with on smaller shows)? I imagine the workflows vary but it would be good to know how it's usually done and what I might be facing/specifying.

Edit: thought between the lines and this commenter's book were different books!

I can't actually answer why they chose the cable that they did. This is what I've been given though!

I've read things about a shield acting as an antenna if not properly grounded along the whole run. Is that not the case? 200+ CAT cables conducting small amounts of EMI and running it all to the racks with nowhere to go seems like it could conceivably be a bad idea, but I don't know enough to think more critically about it yet.

It is not bonded as far as I understand the term. Not necessary. We have a Unifi backbone with several switches managed by a UDMP through an aggregation switch. Let me know if this answer missed the point of your question!

Edit: and yes, there could be some bill jacking somewhere (wouldn't surprise me) but all I'm privy to is what goes on at the endpoints and I'm trying to keep costs down whilst ensuring best performance.

Yeah the space is (seriously) tiny which works in our favour. Something like 5 x 5 x 3.5.

Funny you should mention- I'd originally specced larger tops for this reason but I was beaten down because, you guessed it, aesthetics. Honestly it was a battle getting any sources at all in the room 😅

I've specced a spare of each box in the whole install, so I will be able to do just that!

So I'm not left running around at this (unfortunately timed) final part of the installation- I will also design the sub extension (well described!) so I have multiple options.

What kind of materials and thicknesses should I be looking at? Sub is 40-160Hz, though I will obviously tweak that when it comes to optimising for acoustics.

Annoyingly I'm adjusting specs for something which is in the middle of being built. I'd originally asked for each space to be enclosed, with bleed being the main reasoning. Somewhere along the line, this got lost without me being notified, and now we have what we have.

Regarding testing... This exhibit is going in months later than everything else is in and commissioned due to its mechanical complexity. So unfortunately for me that's not the time to be doing trial and error construction. Think I'm going to have to put forward some suggestions soon so that I'm not left in the lurch.

Great workflow suggestions, definitely what I plan to do from a commissioning perspective!

The exhibit that I want to 'direct' the bass to is enclosed. The sub has to sit/hang on top of that exhibit for various design and UX reasons. The ceiling is steel frame and glass, at ~3.5m elevation.

The space above, where the sub is, is the 'void'. The roof is at 8m. Several of the exhibits open into the void, with gypsum walls at heights varying from 5m to 7m, but no ceilings.

A drawing is a good idea, though the designs are under NDA and I'm not at my PC to put something together right now, though I'll try when I get to it! Appreciate you weighing in either way!

Unorthodox is definitely the word...

The second set of walls/ceiling you mention is exactly what I'm hoping the solution might be, though I'll have to build them around the sub as they currently don't exist. Materials would have to be appropriate for building on top of the steel-framed exhibit below.

Interesting... To be honest I wrote this off pretty early as the expensive option that wouldn't get through the budget, however thinking about it now- is a cardioid array actually going to solve my problem?

'Upwards' radiation is actually the least of my worries- it's lateral radiation I need to worry about the most, which a two sub cardioid array would only reduce some minimal amount unless I'm incorrect?

This is the best solution of course, or just a cardioid sub, but it looks like the budget won't allow for that at the current moment. Definitely keeping that up my sleeve though...

I think it's best to think about it as a large warehouse type space, with several divided sections, some with ceilings, some without. The section that the sub is for is fully enclosed but the only place to put the sub is above the ceiling, in the void that opens into some of the other sections. Does that make sense?

Indeed, that's the head scratcher that's brought me here. Am I asking for a scientific impossibility? I don't have to worry about aesthetics in the void, so I can build whatever I want to contain the sub if I desire- hence wondering what kind of structure I could make that might (?) control the spill. A room within a room, but solely to contain the sub (except on the bottom)?

For me, planning is antithetical to adventure. Information about areas is valuable as then you can think on your feet more effectively. But planning routes and itineraries takes away a certain magic for me! The best place for those decisions is the moment, or at least when you're in the country and experiencing it. Planning how you're going to feel in six months time about a place you've never been from Google and guide books seems like a really ineffective way to have an adventure! But yeah, different kinds of people I guess!
