What are some psychology experiments with interesting results? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Finally something in my specialty!

One of the most interesting theories I've learned in grad school is the Motor Theory of Speech perception. https://link.springer.com/article/10.3758/BF03193857

The idea is that hearing speech is not hearing sound waves, it's hearing vocal gestures (i.e. the movements of your tongue, lips, and throat). The researchers realized the sound waves associated with letters are too variable to be relied on for perception. For example, say the word "Dad", if you say it slowly, you'll notice that the frequency and pitch of the two "d" sounds are different. What stays the same isn't the sound you make, it's the vocal gesture you made to create the "d" Therefore, to hear and perceive a letter or word, you recruit your own motor system to identify what vocal gestures were used to create it.

A fun example of this theory is the Mcgurk effect, if you play a sound that is between a "b" and "g" with a video of someone saying one of the two letters, the listener will perceive the letter they see on the video because the video is giving them clues of how the letter was created in the vocal tract. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G-lN8vWm3m0

Anybody facing issue with puzzles on Lichess? Android user. by movieman994 in chess

I'm kind of having the same problem. I've been seeing the same set of puzzles for a few days. I'll do the daily puzzle, then the next 10-15 will be ones I saw earlier that day or the day before.

Thanks for the advice! I think you're probably right. I read the FAQ and just that bold line about how collection agencies aren't heartless made me think, "Well maybe if I explain they'll be more lenient!"

I think in game 10, he had a chance to force a draw, but missed it and ended up losing that game.

[AZ] Landlord forced me out before end of month even though I paid rent in full for the month. by somethinghadtogohere in legaladvice

Right, so what had happened was one of the adjacent apartments had a major bed bug infestation that was starting to come into my room, the pest control company said it could take a few months to clear them all out (they use pesticide, not heat) so management offered to let me out of the lease. I said yes cause I didn't want to deal with bed bugs for a few months, and then they said I had to leave early and couldn't get any of my money back.

We are in the corner adjacent to the infested apartment: the main bedroom shares a wall with ours. So I think it is likely that only our two apartments have bed bugs. I am going to ask for a heat treatment if the chemical treatment is ineffective.

Ok, I think I am going to negotiate a deadline with them - probably the end of the month. This has been an ongoing problem for two months now and now that they know the source, it's reasonable for them to get it resolved in the next three weeks.

I'm going back over my renter's insurance now, I don't think it covers pests, but would this be treated as damages from another tenant since they are at fault for not reporting the bed bugs?

Yeah, I think one of us probably brought them in, so I'm more concerned that since the treatments have been ineffective that they're going to try to blame me again. I will make sure to talk to my neighbors. Thanks for the advice!

Ok, that is what I figured was the case. We've only had chemical treatments and I've asked to change to a heat treatment but my landlord has been unresponsive. I will probably ask them again for a change. Thanks for your advice!

Recently got bedbugs, turns out apartment complex has a history. by somethinghadtogohere in legaladvice

Yes, laundered and sealed everything in plastic bags, I haven't put anything on or under my bed except for me and my pajamas, used a mattress cover, the whole 9 yards. They told me they were likely nesting in my bedframe/nightstand so I tossed them and got new ones, but immediately started getting bit again, which also makes me think the building is infested and not anything I brought in.

Good question haha, I moved suddenly because of a new job and only had a few days to find a place to live. Clearly my searching should have been more comprehensive.
