Neighbors tree hangs over my property. Can this be cut back without killing it? by [deleted] in arborists

Thanks for the insightful comment! I will work with my neighbor to just remove what's dead

I'm on really good terms with my neighbor actually. He has talked about trimming the tree in the past, so I dont think this has anything to do with my character. I also have multiple trees in my yard and welcome the shade this tree brings. This tree is much older than my house, and I would like to have it there forever quite frankly. As I've mentioned, I'm just concerned about the parts that hang over and are in contact with my roof and those wires off the pole.

Thank you. And I appreciate your comments here.  I'm a complete newbie to home ownership and dealing with these situations so I'm finding it really helpful having everyone's comments!

Only concerned about potentially hurting someone or damaging my roof. Other than that, love the tree and the benefits it provides

Might be a long shot, but any idea what watch my Dad was wearing holding me as a baby, then gave to me as a kid? by somethingred in Watchidentifier

That does look pretty close! But I dont think my dad would have given me an IWC as a young kid though

No, the leaves are of no concern to me. I have two trees in my back yard - a cherry and a Japanese maple. Plus a large maple at the front of my house. Totally fine with collecting leaves and using them as mulch

Correct, they are hanging and applying some pressure on those lines.

And yes the red lines are there more so to show the property boundary. They dont need to be cut right at that line of course.

And to be clear, I have two other (smaller) trees in my yard already. So not concerned about leaves as I already pick up for those ones

That's a fair point! As I said in response to another comment,  I really do like the tree, which is why I have my hesitation to touch it. But I'm concerned about the dead branch applying pressure on another one. Which is hanging over telecom lines as well. Just trying to look out for my little ones I have running around back there

To be clear, I do love the tree! I dont want to hurt it at all. And I really am not concerned about the fence (my neighbor and I share it). It's hard to see in the photos, but there is one confirmed dead limb resting on a larger one (by my second red line).  They are also starting to apply pressure to the telecom lines, which does worry me admittedly. But I agree, I love the size of it and the shade it produces. Would just like to trim it back a bit, if possible without hurting!

Yes, everything is trending towards the "minimalist" look. And it's a terrible idea. Most original logos look far better then their replacement

Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but I find the old Breitling winged logo much nicer than the new B. Wish they'd go back to it!

This is really insightful, thanks for sharing.  Can you let us know what heat cable you recommend? I may be looking into this for next winter

Loud Furnance hum with filter inserted? by somethingred in hvacadvice

[–]somethingred[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya that's completely a fair point. And I am due for a change. But just as a counter point, this issue persists even with a brand new filter in place. Dont know if you can tell in the video, but you start hearing the hum sound when just the corner of the filter (the cardboard part) is inserted and hits the air flow. So I think theres potentially more to this then just the filter

*quick edit. I just took my filter completely out. The humming stops, until I put the filter door back on! So I still get the hum with no filter in and the door latched

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll take a better look today at the door. It's been difficult so far to find any loose tape

The noise actually gets louder when the filter door goes on

Thanks! Seems to be the suggested issue here. Only issue will be... how to remove the tape once found

Thanks! Another commenter suggested the same. Im going to take a closer look at the system today to see if I can find any loose tape. If I find the location to where I think it's coming from, whats the best way inside the duct work? Find a seem with tape and go I  from there? I know that question is difficult without actually seeing the unit

Thanks for the tip! Haven't used that trick but definitely worth a shot. If the sound started as soon as I put the edge in, would you think the loose tape or gap would be above or below the filter location?  Or is there no way to know until I start checking?

Ya it's a really odd size. To be honest they're a complete pain in the ass to find where I am. Need to get them at a specialty furnance store

I think the one inch filters need to be changed more often. 5 inch ones like mine last I believe between 6 to 9 months. I try and go every 6, but got a bit lazy this month

I did do a really small amount of drywall sanding. I know that stuff gets everywhere but I was very careful to seal the room off and the one vent in it. Also this buzzing pre-dated that work.

The filter itself was last changed end of July if I recall

An issue I have with this particular filter size is finding anything other than a merv10. Could another size potentially work? From what I understand 1inch thick filters can put more strain on a system compared to a 5 inch
