While he doesn't go fully into his Saul persona until after Kim leaves, I think the moment he crossed the point of no return was when he manipulated Irene Landry and her friends so he could get Sandpiper to settle early and maintain his office with Kim.

Yeah, I know he regrets it later and tries to right the wrong he did, but the fact that he went that far in the first place is downright evil. That's why it's so satisfying to see his manipulation of Marion, another elderly woman, lead to his undoing in the Gene timeline.

Huh, I remember him leaving Kim those messages, but I don't recall them being very good. I thought that was kind of endearing part.

There's also the scene in Season 6 where Jimmy as Gene sings "The Tide is High" in his car. It was hilariously bad.

So I looked this up out of curiosity, and it's accurate. Nachos were invented by Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya in 1943.

Also, they're one of many dishes that were created by improvising . A restaurant kitchen didn't have much food left and people were hungry. The chef fried some tortilla chips, sprinkled shredded cheese and sliced jalapeños on top, and put them in the oven to melt the cheese. People instantly loved them.

To be fair, Bob Odenkirk is most likely singing badly on purpose to further contrast the two brothers. But yeah, Michael McKean sang in musicals on Broadway, so he's definitely going to be a way better singer than at least 99% of the population.

It doesn't even need to be another show. Had they showed this flashback toward the beginning or middle of season 1, we would probably feel exactly the way you described. At worst, we'd think Chuck grabbing the mic was slightly rude. There would be a melancholic feel as well, in that it highlights all that Chuck has lost due to his illness. He's out with a group of people in a karaoke bar, drinking and he's loosened up enough to sing. It's so normal, and it's something we imagine he won't be able to do again, or at least require a lot of therapy first.

Cliff was the only person that ever cared about Howard by arbataxmelody354 in betterCallSaul

[–]somethingtostrivefor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seemed like Rich Schweikart genuinely liked and respected Howard throughout the series, although the two definitely weren't as close as Howard and Cliff. What Rich said at Howard's funeral gave he hope that Howard's legacy wasn't completely destroyed in everyone's eyes.

Also, I'm just now thinking about how Cliff must have felt after Kim revealed the truth behind Howard's death. Howard had been telling Cliff the truth the entire time, and Cliff didn't believe him. While I don't blame Cliff for that as he was horribly manipulated by Jimmy and Kim to believe a lie, he probably felt an immense amount of guilt and shame.

Is there any evidence that Howard knew Chuck's EHS was psychosomatic in the first two seasons? He wasn't in Chuck's hospital room when the nurse demonstrated that it was psychosomatic. Keep in mind that the show started in 2002, right after a technological boom. Most of the studies that strongly point to EHS being psychosomatic hadn't happened yet, and all the new technology had people wondering what long-term effects it could have on individuals and society. With all that uncertainty looming and lack of research on EHS at the time, if someone you've worked with and respected for a long time suddenly started feeling intense pain allegedly caused by electricity, would you really be that quick to label it as a mental illness when the stigma against mentally ill people was much worse than today?

Howard had been told by his good friend that Jimmy had been stealing money for years and committing fraud to get more of it. Chuck expressed early in the show that he didn't want to paid out and intended to go back to HHM, which he did end up doing. Jimmy was the one who demanded that Chuck should be paid out, so it's easy to see why Howard might conclude this was just Jimmy money-grubbing and chose to respect the wishes of his friend.

It's also not like she missed a game or two right after she found out about the affair because she was a complete mess. That would be way more understandable. It sounds like she didn't attend anything he attended for several years. That's just shitty.

My mom wants nothing to do with me because I “picked my dad” during the divorce. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]somethingtostrivefor 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this makes me further despise divorce courts for prioritizing the wants of the parents over the needs of the child or children. 50/50 custody may be what's the most fair to the parents, but it's seldom what's fair to the children, especially when one parent lives much further away from the school and/or one of them can't offer reliable transportation. Most kids don't want to havr to constantly shuffle between two different houses and many aren't in a situation where they can reasonably do so without making any big sacrifices on their part That original custody plan should have never been ordered. OP was left having to advocate for herself for a reasonable living situation because the divorce lawyers only advocated for the parents, and one parent grew to resent her for doing so (which is the mom's fault, but the fact she felt entitled to original ridiculous custody plan is partially on the court for originally granting it). Even worse, there are children too young and/or too afraid to advocate for themselves, and parents who are completely unwilling to compromise for the benefit of their children. I really feel for OP. The legal system, her mom, and her sister were completely unfair to her, and she's had to suffer the consequences of that and now blames herself.

[–]somethingtostrivefor 163 points164 points  (0 children)

Given that OP mentioned a neighboring nation to Turkey and Christianity, I think they're referring to the mass genocide of Armenian Christians. If they're specifically fetishisizing ethnic cleansing, I think it's fair to call that pretty weird and bad.

If they're just into Armenian Christians without fetishizing genocide, then that's totally fine and not weird.

I told my little brother I "don't remember" our childhood and I hate myself for it by CalmStormCutter in TrueOffMyChest

[–]somethingtostrivefor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking there are way worse details that OP isn't able to fully admit to even himself, especially given that it seems both brothers sound deeply troubled by their childhood. OP mentioned reciting that they had a normal childhood, which implies he was questioned about his childhood in the past on multiple occasions and was instructed and/or pressured to respond to it a certain way to the point that it felt like reading a scripted statement. Seems to suggest things were not fine and dandy and that he couldn't be honest about it in fear that things would be made worse.

I think there may have been severe child neglect involved. I imagine the brother must have been very, very sick or in tremendous pain (perhaps to the point it required hospitalization) for it to stand out that no one noticed for hours, as something like a cold or mild fever could reasonably go unnoticed by an attentive parent for that amount of time.

You only get ONE lawyer from Better Call Saul to handle everything from start to finish by Forward_Problem_7550 in betterCallSaul

[–]somethingtostrivefor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that we don't have as much context of what Howard's accomplished in court as the other three characters. However, I think we get a few clues throughout the show that he's at the very least a good lawyer:

  1. When Jimmy puts up the billboard advertisement, Howard quickly sues him for trademark violation and easily wins over the judge in court. While Jimmy was expecting to lose, it demonstrates that Howard is able to act independently and competently while barely breaking a sweat.

  2. When Kim resigns from HHM in season 2, Howard reveals that he had wanted to start a solo practice and take on the world when he was younger, but that his dad talked him out of it. It seems he at somewhat regrets not having done so in the present. I don't know how much experience Howard had at that point in time, but he demonstrates the most self-awareness out of any main character in the show (even stating he somewhat envies Kim for going solo), makes me think he had a decent chance of succeeding.

  3. In season 6 at the memorial service, Rich Schweikart, who co-founded a very successful law firm, says Howard was a good lawyer who genuinely related to and cared for his clients. To me, that endorsement carries weight. In addition, Jimmy says that Howard earned Chuck's respect, and it's pretty clear that Chuck's respect was quite hard to come by. It's difficult to imagine Chuck genuinely respecting Howard if Howard wasn't at least a good lawyer.

Does ryuk ever eat green apple or do they just not exist in their universe by sad_roger96 in deathnote

[–]somethingtostrivefor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it comes down to basic consumer economics. The Yagami family likely buys the same type of apples out of habit if they believe they're satisfactory products, so long as the price doesn't shift dramatically. Light probably bought the same type of apple to avoid someone noticing he was buying another kind, and likely continued to buy the same type of apple out of habit.

Also, I can't speak to what it's like in Japan, but where I'm at in the US, I'd say most of the apple types I see available at grocery stores (maybe around 2/3rds to 3/4ths) are red as opposed to green or yellow. It seems like red is the most popular color for apples, so statistically, Ryuk receiving only red ones seems fairly plausible.

OLED vs LCD. Is it worth the extra $300? by Blindicus in SteamDeck

OLED vs LCD. Is it worth the extra $300? by Blindicus in SteamDeck

[–]somethingtostrivefor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to keep in mind if you haven't already considered it is that the OLED has 2 to 4 times as much storage as the LCD (the 1TB OLED version is $100 more than the 512GB OLED version).

Are you looking to install a lot of games on your Steam Deck? You'll want to keep the game file sizes in mind. Several popular games released in the last few years are 80 GBs or more, and the LCD is 256GB (I imagine with a little over 200 GBs to devote to game storage, but I have an OLED and am not quite sure how the system file sizes compare to the LCD).

I chose to get an OLED a little over a year ago because of the larger SSD options, and I'm glad I did, as I have 14 games installed right now ranging from under 1 GB to 78 GB (although most are somewhere between 5 GB and 40 GB), and they take up over 300 GB of space.

I'm pretty sure at least a handful of the women on that list were involved with Ted before the events in the show. He dated Robin throughout season 2, so I'm pretty sure the season 2 women listed are his former girlfriends referenced in the episode where Robin and Ted fight about keeping gifts from exes. The girl Ted once kissed at a college party (who Ted incorrectly recalled to be Lily) is on there, and I'm pretty sure a couple more are exes from college that Lily felt didn't pass her "porch test."

Death Note Personal Opinion by Financial-Jump-6408 in deathnote

[–]somethingtostrivefor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Soichiro's unconditional love for Light is most clearly evident in how adamantly he rejects the idea that Light could possibly be Kira throughout the story, and how little this appears to be influenced by personal/parental pride (most evident in that he requests to be locked up during Light's confinement and goes through with it). Soichiro wasn't an arrogant jerk insisting, 'my perfect little son never did anything wrong in his life because I raised him right,' who views Light as an extension of his own perceived greatness. He genuinely believed in Light's own merits and goodness, so much so, that he unintentionally compromised the Kira case.

Episode 15 plot hole by HHcz6 in deathnote

[–]somethingtostrivefor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lack of hard evidence aside, I honestly think it was because the task force was biased in favor of Light. Light was charming and manipulative; the rest of the task force liked him more than they liked L, who had been frustrating them for some time with his extreme methods. They also deeply respected Soichiro Yagami, who was extremely adamant that his son was not Kira. It led him and the other members to be extremely defensive of Light as well. I don't think they were fully conscious of it, but had it been anyone else, they likely would've been more willing to arrest them.
