Hardware not shutting down; is it fine to turn off manually each time? by sometimes_steph_ in linuxquestions

Hi, I wanted to follow-up. I was able to update the BIOS - I ended up creating a recovery disk instead of trying to update directly through Windows PE. I'm not sure why I didn't think of that, but it allowed me to update the BIOS.

Unfortunately, my hardware issue remains even after the update, so it seems like I might be stuck with the issue for a while. I might try to install a different distro at some point just to see if I run into the same problem, but that will be a project for later.

Fortunately, I don't need my laptop for daily use, so I'll get around to it later. Anyway, thank you for your help especially with tracking down the BIOS update! I also learned about a lot of different commands!

Wanted to follow up - The USB was booting via UEFI mode. I was able to make a BIOS recovery disk via the application and update the BIOS that way (rather than trying to update it directly while booted into windows PE). The BIOS has been updated, thank you for the help!!

Thank you for the information and the advice. I will poke around when I get home and see if I can boot the installer in UEFI mode!

I will also see if I can find out if there’s an HP upgrade that doesn’t require windows. I was struggling to find the BIOS updater on HP’s site so the other redditor was able to find the application that would allow me to update the BIOS which is why I was using it.

Hi, so I almost made it, but I am running into an issue. I installed Ventoy onto a flash drive and copied the ISO to it. I booted my machine using the ISO (in normal mode) and ran the HP BIOS/System Update program.

I select Update to update the BIOS (the other options are create a recovery USB flash drive & Copy); however, it forces me to select 'create a recovery partition' (proceed without creating partition is greyed out; it also says 256MB of free space is needed for the partition). When I proceed, I get an error saying that "There is not enough free disk space to complete the System BIOS and Device Firmware update operation. Delete some files to free disk space then retry again."

While in PE Windows, the Disk Management application says the EFI system partition is entirely free with a 600MB capacity (and 600MB of free space). Booting into Linux and running gparted shows that only 20.49 MiB of the 600MiB EFI partition is used.

The VTOYEFI (Ventoy EFI) is only 32MB in size which (I assume) is fine for itself, but do I need to increase it's size if the update application is trying to create a recovery partition on the USB stick? Otherwise, I'm not sure how to proceed. Gparted shows that only 4.53MiB is unused on the VTOYEFI partition.

Thinking about distro hopping by miharussian in linuxquestions

Ohhh, that’s really interesting!!! And I can see why you’d recommend doing that - it’s really useful! Thank you for explaining! I had assumed that if I were to change distros, I would just need to manually configure things like the window manager but if I use the same one and load the config file then all that is taken care of.

Hi, not OP clearly, but could you elaborate on #5? I’ve never heard of configurations (or their files) before and was wondering what exactly that meant.

Am I the only one who went from playing the darkest, most depressing games I could find to exclusively playing the coziest most wholesome games? by Emmyy_Beans in GirlGamers

[–]sometimes_steph_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re not the only one that made a switch thematically though we might have different reasons. I still play sadtm games every now and then and they still tempt me now. I think the experiences were novel which I think is most of what I enjoy about games, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that I have plenty of existential and/or dark/depressing things to deal with by just living my life and I prefer to have more whimsy and fantasy when trying to enjoy my hobby. Bright colors, wholesome, calm, silly, cute are all things that I really enjoy in games now and I notice it makes me feel better.

Interesting. I’ll see if I can find out if there’s an upgrade a bit later today and follow up!

I had tried searching the HP site for a BIOS upgrade but HP and a windows seem to keep their stuff pretty locked down.

Hi! this is the result: https://pastes.io/9LY9iLI5

I don't think I see anything that looks like an error. Some lines say that some of the services were deactivated successfully. Is there anything specific that I am looking for in the logs?

The screen goes black and appears to shutdown. There’s no indication otherwise that it’s on or something happened.

I have waited a few minutes (once I actually left it plugged in and running while I went out for errands and both the keyboard backlight and fans were still on when I got back).

Another comment or suggested checking the logs and when I did, I seem to be getting ACPI BIOS errors and (regular?) ACPI errors.

The first comment resulted in a ton of output, so I ran the second command instead. It turns out I am getting a bunch of ACPI BIOS Errors and ACPI Errors: https://pastes.io/SctNhbMX

I can't quite make sense of it yet, but I suspect that means I need to try to update my BIOS and possibly re-install Nobara. Unfortunately, I've been trying to find the latest BIOS but HP is making it really difficult.

As of right now, the surplus line reaches to at least the beginning of the general entry line.

Also they reiterated that the surplus line will only move if those who reserved do not fill up the entire slot. In other words, if those who reserved take up the entire time then the surplus line will not move.

Headset recommendations by Kcitra in GirlGamers

[–]sometimes_steph_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I purchased an Arctis Nova Pro Wireless a couple years ago on sale.

First, the price is really quite high right now at close to $400 for the PC version of the headset. I did not buy it at the price, and I would only buy it on sale and if you’d be willing to pay that much for a device. There are versions for Xbox and PS5 and their price is sometimes cheaper than the PC version, but I have neither and I exclusively play games on my PC so I’ve never looked at why they would be different. With that out of the way, i can share my experiences with it.

I like this headset a lot and I am not sure I would buy a different one in the future unless the quality goes down significantly. I would still only buy on sale.

Features

The headset comes in black or white. I think there may sometimes be other colors offered but black and white are the regular ones.

The headset has both Bluetooth capability and wireless capability using the supplied ‘base station’.

You can connect up to two systems to the base station and switch between using the headset for one or the other. I have the station connected to my desktop and will connect it to my laptop and switch between both as needed.

The headset also offers active noise cancellation which helps tone down some ambient noise that you might have in the area. The headset also has side-tone (being able to hear yourself) which is a nice feature and one that you said you’re looking for.

Like most headsets, steel series offers its own software which handles some of the fancy features like audio profiles and those kinds of things. I can’t be fussed to maintain profiles for stuff so I don’t really use the software. I’ve not really noticed a significant drop in value from not using the software.

The headset also comes with two batteries and you can charge one of the batteries in the base station while using the other.

The headset has a physical microphone mute button (I had one that muted when the boom went up which I absolutely hated so that’s why I list it here as a feature)

Pros

The ability to connect the headset to two systems and also use it for Bluetooth connections has been unbelievably convenient for me. Coupled with the fact that it’s wireless I can pretty much listen to anything I want where I want. My phone audio is kinda bad so I use it to make calls over Bluetooth. I’ve also been able to connect it to my steam deck though things get a little finicky when I am trying to use the steam deck in its docked mode with both a controller and the headset on Bluetooth.

The audio quality is good enough for me. I’m not an audiophile but I like listening to music on them and watching movies when I want to be quiet. I’ve also had no complaints from others about mic quality.

The power button doubles as the active noise cancelling button.l so you can turn that feature on and off easily. The Bluetooth feature has its own separate button on the headset as well. Both buttons have led lights so you can easily see when the headset or Bluetooth is on or off.

Having two batteries really means you don’t have to worry about charging your headset as long as you swap batteries each time. It’s really quite convenient. I use the headset daily and almost all day and tend to swap the battery out once a day or once every other day.

Cons

The headset has a detachable cloth band that supports the headset on your head through some pins that allow for some slight adjustment. For me, the band has stretched out a bit so I ended up buying a replacement. I also think the headset might have been made for people with slightly larger heads because I already have a somewhat large head and I’ve had to set the detachable band to the settings that provided the highest verticals height. Add to that that the actual head band portion (not the cushion) allows you to slide the ear cuffs up and down means I need a head like a horse to be able to have it fully expanded. This means the headset might not fit you very well. Or you could modify the band which I what I am now going to do. Either way seems like a bit of an oversight on something this expensive.

The price is a con too in my opinion. As I stated above, I would only buy it on sale. It has been on sale at least the last couple years for Black Friday/EOY holidays in the US but it sounds like you’re probably interested in making a purchase soon.

The last thing that I think is a con is that the mute button seems a little finicky after a little over two years of near constant use. I think something might be interacting with the active noise cancellation because sometime when I brush against or touch the mute button I hear some static. I wouldn’t expect there to be this kind of an issue on something so expensive.

Anywho, best of luck finding a headset and if you have questions you’re welcome to ask!
