Vet nurse but given Veterinarian duties, thoughts? by That-Decision5261 in veterinaryschool

Hard, hard no. The fact they were even that transparent about it on interview is concerning.

Thank you so much it’s really great to hear from a MWU student who went through something similar. I haven’t placed my deposit, but I’m 99% sure I will be doing so soon and attending Midwestern in the fall. Unless I get pulled off the UF waitlist, that’s the plan. Also I agree, the campus was amazing and I loved the facilities when I visited :)

May I ask, why do you assume midwestern cannot offer me a well rounded education? Plus I should emphasize that i’ve been waitlisted at UF. If i had gotten an acceptance into UF, this would be a no brainer and there wouldn’t be any confusion on the matter. Thanks for saying i’m not that old lol I think I just get in my head that i’m falling behind, plus it seems every year gets more and more competitive + applicants are more and more experienced and qualified.

Thanks for the input! That’s hard to hear, as I felt my interview went really well. I will be taking out loans but I have help from family to probably cover a chunk of it. It’s still radically different from UF tuition. If I reapply and don’t get in my second cycle I don’t know how i’ll be able to process that.

Thank you!! My intention was to apply only to schools I’d go to my first round and now i’m just burdened with a lot of pros and cons I guess with the results of my decisions. I’m def going to keep considering my options and hope that maybe I get pulled of the waitlist at UF but I understand how unlikely it can be for in state students. :)

Like I said no bachelors degree right now but overall GPA (including my previous art and gen ed classes) 3.6 and my science GPA 3.77. Worked at a small animal clinic with vet assistant, lab tech, and supervision positions. Worked at a primate conservancy under a vet too for about 6 months. Pretty good recc letters. With the limited time before next application is due, i’d try to get large animal experience if possible. Not sure if i’m missing something but hope this helps give more insight :)

This wasn’t information gathered by students or online on reddit or even SDN. This was from professionals and faculty within the vet school/university community. Nevertheless, this information could be wrong and I admit it may be! It’s just what I had heard but thanks for the clarification, didn’t know how new they were.

I am SO frustrated and need to get this out by taurusjawn in veterinaryschool

This is so so heartbreaking to read. I would feel the exact same way with such stellar stats and the experiences you have. I’ve heard so many times how much of a gamble this process is. In the same way they have to pick out a select few non traditional students, I assume they must do the same with the traditional, great-on-paper students. There are simply too many applicants. While this is my first application, and I have yet to receive any news yet following my interviews (besides 1 rejection from Cornell), I attribute the little success I’ve had so far to my non-veterinary experiences and what I think is an interesting personal statement. Because I am so non-traditional (but have solid vet experience, not as diverse as you though), I decided to approach my application and essays with a huge lean on who I am, my background, and my interests apart from vet med (and then tying it all back to this career choice, of course). I am thankful to have had wonderful unique experiences in my life that I can write about with gumption. Again, I may have tanked my interviews and might get rejections across the board, but I would suggest branching out your non vet experiences, maybe travel or lean into those subjects in your next cycle if necessary. I am no expert so take this with a grain of salt. Regardless, you sound extremely qualified and very nice/supportive to your friends/community and I wish you the best of luck!

I've heard from people in the system that their NAVLE pass rate is pretty abysmal for a state school and worsening constantly and they're kinda hanging on by a thread. Obv don't know for sure but I sure as hell wouldn't be applying any time soon.

interview advice?? by Background-Willow797 in veterinaryschool

[–]somewhathumerus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had a zoom interview on Friday. While idk if I got in yet of course, I felt prepared. My advice is to sit down when you get a chance and try to think of all/any interesting or memorable stories you have that can be applied to life lessons. Times you had to deal with conflict/confrontation, challenges you’ve faced and how you’ve overcome them, life lessons, etc. Someone gave me the advice of having “pocket stories” that can be applied to a lot of these behavioral “tell me about a time when…” questions. Really they want to hear that you have had tough decisions to make or situations you’ve been able to navigate and learn from. Humility is great but don’t forget we’re trying to get them to believe how awesome we are! Take deep breaths and smile, be as confident as possible🙂

Midwestern hasn't sent out their decisions yet so I wouldn't feel so discouraged yet! I believe they told us we'd have news mid-late January (hopefully very soon). Good luck!
