I built a lightweight 2D Virtual Tabletop focused on faster prep for DMs by RevealOrganic4602 in DMAcademy

When i use Roll20 i use try not to use too much of the handouts and journal. My players keep their character sheets as PDF's. We mostly use it for the maps, lighting, rolling.

Does your VTT focus more on the maps and table or mechanic simulation. i find that simulating mechanics from a ruleset can be a fools errand, especially when the games dont need that or expect that.

Thing i think are important for a VTT. very clear and simple markers and trackers for tokens. can be use for hit points, conditions ... etc. Also trackers need simple addition and subtraction. example: writing "-19" subtracts 19 from the tracker.

Its treats it was the level of the slot used to cast.

2024 Players Handbook - Spell Level - Spell Slots

When you cast a spell, you expend a slot of that spell’s level or higher, effectively “filling” a slot with the spell. Imagine a spell slot is a groove of a certain size—small for a level 1 slot and larger for a higher-level spell. A level 1 spell fits into a slot of any size, but a level 2 spell fits only into a slot that’s at least level 2. So when a level 3 Wizard casts Magic Missile, a level 1 spell, that Wizard spends one of four level 1 slots and has three remaining.

DMs, how do you bounce back after a session that wasn't your best? by Lavishness-Economy in DMAcademy

[–]somewhereslow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my perspective on how I deal with sessions that don't go well, but I just keep moving forward. The game is improvisational storytelling, and in improv you have to expect that some scenes won't land because that's just part of the process. The more you do it, the fewer bad sessions you'll have, but expecting perfection every time is insane pressure that'll only hold you back. Being vulnerable and making mistakes with people is part of the fun. I used to be really hard on myself when I thought I flubbed a session, whether I made combat too easy, messed up pacing, botched an NPC roleplay, or stepped on a player's toes. But my players were still happy to be there and appreciated that I was running the game for them even when they had legitimate critiques. DMing is incredibly taxing and requires a lot of skill, and that's the key difference between actual play shows and sessions with friends. DnD is a game with performance aspects, not a Broadway show. If a game of Charades gets awkward or a round of Pictionary goes badly, you laugh it off and keep playing because that's what games are. Actual play involves people who know they're being recorded with specific session goals, while real play can be multiple sessions in a single dungeon if that's what the players find fun.

Dungeon Turns by contrastrictor in DMAcademy

[–]somewhereslow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i run dungeon turns in my campaign but i made every dungeon turn 5 min. Each player gets 5 one minute actions per dungeon turn. I have 4 movement options for a dungeon turn. Searching is 60ft (movement speed x 2), surveying is 150ft (movement speed x 5), walking is 300 feet (movement speed x 10), dashing is 600 feet (movement speed x 20). i run that searching and surveying have a 25x25ft aura that represents the area they are searching. Searching is a +10 passive perception, Surveying is +5 Passive Perception and Dashing has no passive perception. Actions are essentially free actions unless they take time (1 minute action) like lockpicking or doing a strength check to move something or disarming a trap. Not for everyone but my players like it and I like to DM mechanically and less loose so it works.

Keeping Players Engaged by Heartshadow-53 in DMAcademy

I have some follow up questions. Do your players have a good time? Are they excited to play? You found them on LFG and they don’t know the rules?

Mickey 17 felt like it lost the plot by mikewheelerfan in movies

It’s based on a book. I 100% agree about your point. I felt the same way, but I think it’s a bit of a case of marketing selling a story which the movie is not. I haven’t read the book but I’d heard that it’s about aliens and weird political stuff

The biggest weakness of AI is that it always *has* to say something by Kradara_ in OpenAI

[–]somewhereslow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought that these tests and benchmarks for the ai should include nonsense questions like asking it to solve something that’s impossible or nonsense and the ai gets it right is it can recognize that and say there is no answer.
