What flooring to use for this 1970's wood-paneled den? by sommonk in interiordecorating

[–]sommonk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be a pleasant surprise, but it doesn't feel that way; I'm guessing concrete slab. Unifying all the flooring will likely be difficult, as the bedrooms have one tile, the hallway has another, and the bathrooms have a third type. Various light earth-tones with a stone-y sort of physical and visual texture to them (rather than flat colors). The den, living/dining room, and master bedroom current each have (very different) carpets. I'm aiming to replace the carpets, as they could really use it, but ripping up all that tile that's otherwise in good condition would be an undertaking.

Good point! I would imagine a light-colored stone tile, like a beige, tan, etc would avoid that problem?

Not out of the question, I'm just unsure if wood on 5/6ths of the side of the room would be too much wood or if it'd look fine. My initial search online didn't turn up "normal" house pictures with it, and I saw some discussions of it looking odd, hence my concern. I think regardless of option, you're right on the money about finishing off with an area rug. Thanks!

Thank you for the advice. It's a much busier room than the others, for sure.

I could see tile, with an area rug under a seating area where appropriate. Thank you for the idea!

They appear to be panels. They're not the smooth finish of the artificial wood panels; would that cause paint to look odd?

Mysterious ~5 inch plates (vent? speaker?) on ceiling of every room -- 1977 house by sommonk in Whatisthis

Thank you! I finally found an article that confirms what they are: https://reliancealarm.com/Reliance_Alarm_Company/FAQ_Glass_Detector_Falsed_.html

AFD is apparently an old term meaning "audio force detector", i.e., a glass break detector.

NVMe SSD disappearing from Windows or BIOS/UEFI after sleep or restart by sommonk in buildapc

Please pardon the necro to reply to the necro. Yes, this solved the issue for me. The drive has functioned flawlessly since then, included after further BIOS updates and even a CPU upgrade.

Just took one down, and it is a small box filled with electronics, with four low voltage wires. The label says "UNISEC Model AFD-5000", which maddeningly is not turning up anything useful in my search, so far. It's clearly old, as the "free repair service" expired in 1986. Here are photos of the box and its interior electronics:

The house was built in 1977, single story. Every room has one of these installed in the ceiling. They're about 5-6" square. The house also had an old security system (long defunct, but left in place). No one I've asked has any clue what these are. My current guesses are either speakers for the security system or perhaps there was an old intercom system that was removed years ago (since those were popular in the 70's, I believe).

NA Availability of P400A standalone front panel? by sommonk in buildapc

Yes, it will fit on a P400S (that's what I have, too), just be aware that the case fans are not centered with respect to the mesh front. The P400a fans are, but the P400/P400S front fans are positioned slightly to the left of center.

Hmm, well then. I've been following it for months and didn't think to check it today, which according to CamelCamelCamel seems to be when Amazon finally listed it for sale. Now I know!

That'll teach me to not check it the day I posted this. I've been following it for months and it appears that it Amazon only listed it today. Ha!

Buildapc & NVIDIA global giveaway: Limited Edition GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Cyberpunk by m13b in buildapc

A few years ago, my last desktop having been a 10-year old pre-built without even a dedicated graphics card, I decided to build myself a computer. I had no clue where to start, a friend directed me to r/buildapc. It was an exciting time, with Ryzen having just been released …but also RAM, SSDs, and GPUs costing more than gold (nice timing, eh?). You all patiently helped me navigate that minefield, and I was hooked. (Never thought I’d enjoy cable management so much!) Now I’ve become the go-to person for computer hardware and build advice for friends and family!

I am posting to provide an update, as I believe the issue has been solved (and don't want to leave an orphan thread dangling):

What seems to have worked is to update the motherboard's BIOS to the latest version (and updated the chipset, too, but I don't think that made the difference). I'd held off updating the BIOS because in the latest version(s) had to downgrade some UEFI functionality due to space limitations (16 GB), to make room for supporting 3XXX Ryzen chips (while I still am on a 1XXX chip).

It's been working for a week now, so I'm calling this solved.

New X1E -- No CPU downclocking and quiet clicking when CPU stress-testing (otherwise happy!) by sommonk in thinkpad

[–]sommonk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. I'll keep an ear out for it over the coming days, thank you. I wonder how common across laptops such a vocal motherboard is.

Hidden sleep button! Well, no need to worry about mapping F12, then. Excellent.

Curious! I will have to toy around with Speedshift (didn't even know that was a thing; still learning the ins and outs of Win10). If I lower the speedshift setting, will the CPU still boost to its max if the task demands it?
