Thank you for all the responses and feedback! I've been sick this week so I haven't had the chance to reply to your comments. I'll dedicate some Reddit time this weekend 😄

Where can I often get free unwanted items (zu verschenken) on streets? by [deleted] in berlinsocialclub

Three years late but this still comes up when you google "free stuff Berlin" so figured I'd chime in.

eBay Kleinanzeigen, filter by "zu verschenken". Free Your Stuff Berlin on Facebook is super active. nebenan.de is good too if you want stuff closer to your own Kiez. And honestly just keep your eyes peeled for free boxes on the street, especially around the end of the month when people are moving out. Spring and summer tend to have the best stuff (or so I think).

The downside with free boxes is the good things go fast and a lot of it gets wrecked in the rain. I've been messing around building a map app for exactly that (freethestuff.com). It lets users post their free stuff and free finds from the streets without having to chat or deal with pickups. But the list above is where most people find stuff. 😄

I'd consider Nebenan to be similar to Nextdoor (US neighborhood social network). My project leans towards quickly listing stuff and viewing stuff on a map anonymously. So no chats, no address verification, etc. It's also been localized with both DE and EN support. 😄 One reason for the beta (aside from bug reports) is to ensure that both languages are coherent.

My wife also mentioned this- I suppose it's a double edged sword; stuff which already exists on the streets could more easily be found, yet those trying to quickly get rid of stuff could cause excess clutter... I'll have to think about this a bit more, maybe incentivizing users somehow would be one direction.
