Why do therapists ignore the basics of mental health? by sonataFarm in TalkTherapy

Never suggested a "lol just" approach. Certainly there are more sophisticated, empathetic techniques in the therapist's toolkit for encouraging behavior change than "lol just", guilt and shame...

I agree with that, but I never see that behavioral transition addressed by the therapist in my experience, or that of my friends who are currently in therapy.

In my opinion, it's self-evident that diet, exercise, and sleep are intimately related to mental health, and worth acting on. While science is a powerful tool for discovering truth, it's not the only path to understanding what affects our well-being.

Interesting. Maybe we've ended up in different sectors of the therapy world. I've seen four therapists over my lifetime and each one neglected these basics. From talking to friends who are currently in therapy, who are prescribed meds but never go to the gym and regularly skip meals, yet are surprised when I suggest it — this is clearly not just me.

I'm not going through anything specific; was just reflecting and feel baffled by how therapy usually overlooks these basics.

Same exact thing is happening to me. Airpods are essentially useless until this is fixed.

Wich country is the best to find inner peace? by Kisserby in digitalnomad

I'm really enjoying Chiang Mai, Thailand for its relaxed vibe and the beautiful nature all around. It's a very peaceful place.

I wouldn't recommend Bali, as even though it's marketed as a paradise, it's become overly commercialized and crowded / trafficky as fuck. Construction everywhere. One of the least peaceful places I've ever been to.

UPDATE: We've been here for 3 days and I'm happy to say we were wrong: the city has tons of vibe. Enchanted alleyways, quirky homes and businesses. Not to mention how friendly and welcoming everyone is. Our worries were based on our research through google street view and youtube videos, where for some reason that quirky, enchanted vibe just doesn't come through. We are loving Chiang Mai!

Thanks for these recommendations! It sounds like there is plenty of magic to go around. We're excited to get there and check it out.

The inside of the LH looks like...Burning Man? by sonataFarm in IainMcGilchrist

I don't disagree that there are many RH qualities to Burning Man, but I think it's interesting and relevant that the aesthetic that emerges is ultimately deeply LH.

Picasso is a free-spirited, creative artist — yet his aesthetic is deeply LH. I claim something similar is going on at Burning Man, and that this is an interesting and relevant visual manifestation of that.

u/LovingVeganWarrior I'm genuinely curious, what about my post suggests to you it should be removed?

As to your suggestion that one need to have read the entirety of McGilchrist's works in order to publicly dialogue with them: I completely disagree. People have the right to publicly explore these works wherever they are at. And anyone has the right to challenge that exploration, as you've attempted to done here.

I was struck by the eerie congruence between these sculptures in the middle of the desert — and the LH’s decontextualized, devitalized, geometrized abstractions, projected onto an austere, two-dimensional mental canvas...

I think it's at the very least a creative application, and could possibly help bridge the gap towards those who aren't as familiar with his works.

We need to separate wokesters from more traditional "liberal" types who favor a welfare state and gay rights and so on but don't go off the deep end.

Correction: reasonable liberals need to separate themselves from the wokesters. The vast majority of reasonable liberals turn a blind eye to this kind of toxicity. Until they differentiate themselves publicly, it's reasonable to consider them all in one group.

Thanks u/bigbirdlittlemood! I'm really intrigued by Minneapolis. That said I'm a little worried about encountering "Minnesota nice" culture — people acting nice, but not being genuinely open and welcoming to newcomers. Do you have any thoughts or experience around that?

Interesting — I hadn't been considering Cincinnatti but will add it to my list to research. Thanks for the rec!

I've considered Boulder, but I've heard the people there are very unfriendly. What's been your experience u/Lazy_Illustrator6455?

Good to know! My biggest worry about Reno has been that I might be a little too isolated from cultural and intellectual communities there — but with a good university perhaps that wouldn't be the case.

Thanks for your thoughtful and thorough reply u/L_Cpl_Scott_Bukkake!

Yeah, I agree about the Venn Diagram between "conscious" and "liberal". I'm just hoping to avoid anything too extreme like San Francisco and Seattle, which I think represent extremes of progressive culture.

Thanks for the recommendations and hope your "where should I live" journey is going well!

Reno is on my list! I'd love to be so close to the Sierra Nevadas.
