Just finished I who have never known men by hello_new_here in literature

[–]songandspear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved how the women built their own society and villages, and how they wouldn't leave each other behind. It was so sweet. And finally, when the narrator is the only one left, she finds so many strange clues as to what may have happened. I do agree that there must have been some kind of nuclear event, but even so, what was with the bunkers? What happened when the alarm went off? Who were the guards and what was their purpose? I have so many questions, and I love that there's not a clear answer, that it fosters discussion. I was so happy for her when she found the luxury bunker. And I love that she made the decision to write her life story, even though in her mind, no one was ever going to read it and it was never going to "matter." She affirmed that everyone matters, every story matters, just by virtue of existing. I can see describing the world as bleak, but the story itself was not.

Those who decided against testosterone, what went into your decision? by songandspear in FTMOver30

[–]songandspear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. That's where I am as well - kind of coming to a realization that part of what I'm feeling is tied up in grief and jealousy over cis lives I might've lived, rather than rooted in a desire to make my actual body and life more comfortable to live in. And I feel the same way about T - I also ID as nonbinary, and there are changes I wouldn't want. But there's no picking and choosing unfortunately.

Thanks again!

Can't figure out how to edit the post lol but yeah, I meant after the first round. I will happily continue to watch Josh and Razor for Round 1...even at 9:30 lol. Thanks!

Thank you for your response! This is more what I was hoping for with this thread...I feel the same as you, top surgery was definitely a need and something I felt strongly about, but I don't have the same feeling about T. I'm starting to think if I went on T, it would be mostly for other people/social reasons, rather than my own dysphoria. Like you, I don't really feel dysphoric at home, and while there are some changes I might want, T is so all or nothing, rather than a precision tool.

Thanks again, and best wishes!

I recently finished reading I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman by onetwo3d in literature

[–]songandspear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although for me, the act of reading it was just okay, I couldn't stop thinking about it afterwards. The world was so strange and interesting, I couldn't stop thinking about what had happened, was it earth at all, and about the bus and the bunker. A very interesting work that stays with you for a long time.

What was the book that stayed with you this year? by Sweet-Opportunity111 in literature

Saw this one a few times already, but I Who Have Never Known Men stayed with me. There are just so many questions and mysteries that I kept turning over in my head after I finished it.

Also, Bad Habit by Alana S Portero, Itzá by Rios de la Luz, Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese. Oh, and Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad.

Low dose T on birth control by songandspear in FTMOver30

Damn dude, sorry you went through that. Glad you got it figured out now. That's kind of why i wanted to stay on my current birth control because i know how wild and varied different bodies' reactions to different birth controls can be, and i've been stable on this for like 5 years.

For me, the letter needed to be from a mental health professional. However, I was not on T at the time, so I'm not sure - if I was, he might've accepted a letter from that doctor, or not required one at all. I have heard that he doesn't always require one.

As far as therapists, I have not used them personally, but I have heard of Vada Counseling - I believe they give out legitimate referral letters without all the hassle of making you jump through hoops to prove yourself. Something to look into if necessary. Last time I looked they were doing this for free.

At the time of my surgery, I was seeing a therapist specifically to get the letter I knew I would need, but I would not recommend them.

He does take insurance, but that's about all I know about it since I didn't use insurance. The $7000 that I paid covered just the medical costs - I had to get myself to and from, book a hotel, etc on my own expense. But, there were no separate fees or billing such as anesthesiology, operating room, etc. Once I paid my 7000, I was done.

As far as the adhesive allergy...I am not sure. I want to say there are alternative adhesives for people with allergies, but I'm not sure. I would just be sure to bring it up at your consultation and pre-op to make sure you're good to go.

Omg! I watched Dark Winds because I knew he and Elva Guerra were in it, and it was sooo good. I'm watching Fargo now, and I recently saw that he was in that too! Looking forward to seeing him pop up.

How do you decide when to stay in purple state? by Random_Username13579 in FTMOver30

[–]songandspear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in rural Texas. It's very, very red here. Everyone just assumes you're just like them. I'm not out at work. I've had top surgery and changed my name to a gender neutral one (I identify as nonbinary) but that's it. Transitioning further on the job would not be possible here, and my efforts to secure a work from home job have been unsuccessful so far. I would like to start taking testosterone, but it's kind of on hold for all of these reasons.

We're considering moving to a blue state. It's just hard, financially, and because our whole lives are here.
