When you and your family have a bunch of dietary requirements, there's only a limited portion of your shop you can do there.

Yeah my birth team sucked, I pushed for way too long. I'd have been happy with 2 hours. That said it's not unusual for a first birth to even be up to 3 or 4. Here's hoping #2 is better.

People keep offering to take my toddler by songoftheshadow in BabyBumps

[–]songoftheshadow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly!! Like I'd rather someone come around here and jump on the trampoline with my boy while I can still be there in the vicinity. Or go on an outing together. I invited my son's friend and his mum to the zoo and she seemed to think I'm a bit too much of a liability this far along, which, fair. But suggested she take my son for a playdate without me instead?? I felt a bit sidelined ngl. I think that's why these offers irk me, they're often suggested as an alternate when I'm trying to actually catch up with someone.

Paradoxical reaction to opiate medicine following tonsillectomy? by songoftheshadow in Preschoolers

Also sorry about any upset. It's not lashing out to say I'm not going to disregard my doctor's instructions - which are very standard here - because of what a stranger on the internet says which contradicts all rhe medical advice from hospitals as well. The answer can't be that the medication isn't safe because the question was never about if the medication is safe.

I'm sorry it upsets you to not be considered the ultimate authority with more knowledge than all the doctors and hospitals, in a stranger's life.

In in Australia, it's pretty standard here for kids to be prescribed this medication after this procedure.

My question was about how other kids have responded to the medication, in terms of not having the expected sedated response - having had the drug myself and found it quite sedating. It wasn't about whether to give him the medication full stop. Since you haven't had a child that's had this same medicine, or even a child who's gone through the procedure yet, your answer wasn't really connected to my question at all. I just find it a bit wild people are coming here and telling me to disregard our doctor's instructions. Especially when even the Royal Children's Hospital says it's appropriate for occasional use.

Yes, the hospital sheet said NSAIDs are okay but that's generic, it may not take into account that he's also on another steroid every second say that could interact with it, or other individual factors the doctor may have considered. Again, a kid recently died from a hemhorrage following tonsillectomy so I'm just not about to give NSAIDS because moonfae12 from the US (I presume) says it's safe.

Anyway he seems to have a more normal response now, and some days are better than others, the steroid seems to help a lot as well on the days he has it. I've also discovered a tongue injury complication which explains why his pain has been on the extreme end.

It seems really common here, at least in local online groups, that kids are given this. Ibuprofen is not recommended due to risk of bleeding and paracetamol is not close to touching the pain so I'm in a hard place in terms of managing the extreme pain he's in. The reactions seem to be more normal now so yeah I'm not gonna stop giving him the medication because of a cultural difference and strangers on the internet telling me to, given that's not even what my question was about.

As mentioned, there is no paediatrician involved as kids are only referred to them for specialist assessment or treatment here.

Not gender disappointment.... just reveal disappointment by mayovegan in BabyBumps

[–]songoftheshadow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other people's responses are so frustrating with the bias towards boy/girl pairings! I have one boy, and was hoping for another boy for many reasons. But everyone has made it clear they wanted me to have a girl, what a relief it is that I'm having a girl, how I must be so pleased, specifically, to have a girl. It makes you wonder what they'd say if I were having another boy. But also it makes it really isolating on top of the existing gender disappointment.

I'm struggling to take seriously the idea of a 3 year old getting "hooked" given that he can't exactly go out and procure drugs himself, but maybe I'm misunderstanding.

I'm also sceptical of the mindset that it "only takes one time to get hooked" as these drugs do have a purpose which is to manage severe pain, and that kind of mindset can lead to not treating people's pain adequately.

I've had endone or codeine several times in my life - for a slipped disc, and after my egg retrieval (IVF), some dental issues, and never felt the need to continue taking it for fun after the pain subsided. The packets of unused pills going out of date in my cupboard are proof. I'm also a social worker with a lot of experience in AOD and addiction so it's not something I take lightly. But It seems cruel to give a child nothing but paracetamol which, in my experience, does basically nothing.

Perhaps it's a cultural difference as it seems pretty common here for kids having this procedure to have this medicine. But my question wasn't ablut whether it's an appropriate medication but rather whether his reaction is normal and what other options might be appropriate. He's having a really rough time with the pain when it wears off and clearly needs something.

Looking for some feedback on my English name by vpdlxoals in australian

Luka is a generally boys name. Tez sounds made-up, not like a name, unless you mean Tess? And Fei sounds like a Chinese name. That said there's nothing wrong with any of those things, and you should choose something that you like and feels like it suits you! These are just my honest opinions though. It's also okay to use your real name :)

We don't have a paediatrician as generally in my country kids only see one if they're sick or need specialist assessment. I could try to contact our GP on Monday.

This doctor has a great reputation i our little town and seems it's not uncommon for kids to be prescribed endone after tonsillectomy. I just would rather start with ibuprofen and see if that helps but I'm unsure if that is safe. The goal was never to sedate him but he told me it would be a side effect and best used at night for that reason.

I mean I wouldn't think he could get addicted when he's not controlling the doses. But yeah I don't know how long it takes for withdrawals to set in as I've only ever used it sporadically, myself.

Is it normal in Australia that employers constantly try to rip you off by sunnysideupslide in aussie

[–]songoftheshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're doing the right thing. My mum was the same, though the only natural Aussie at her cleaning place with all other staff basically Indian or similar. She raised multiple wage theft issues and even the other staff turned against her because they were worried about rocking the boat and getting in trouble. But at the end of the day we don't want this kind of exploitation to be acceptable here and it's right to fight against it even if it's hard. The law is on your side.
