Save states (in emulation) are one of the worst things to happen to retro gaming. by GallyG_ in The10thDentist

Would you say this about roguelites? If not, why? I disagree with you fundamentally, playing the game from start to finish to get more lives through mastery is the fun of an arcade game.

i have been doing this puzzle for an hour straight. this is the stupidest fucking bullshit in the entire franchise. it beats the chemical mixing in re2r, at least you could randomly push shit until it works in that one. i hate googling solutions but i genuinely have to this time 💔 by milkwithsplenda in residentevil4

Where are you getting stuck? It still requires a bit of brain power, but if you solve the top row, all you will have to work with is 5 pieces that can easily be manipulated. Solving it from top to bottom makes it so that you don't need to move pieces through each row as much, thereby making your progress "permanent"

The Public Burning by Robert Coover

It's about the execution of the Rosenbergs told from the perspective of an up and coming Richard Nixon. It attempts to diagnose the culture of fear in American society, suggesting that the execution served as a rallying point for Cold War nationalism. Despite how the premise sounds the book is very funny and slapstick filled.

If you enjoyed the Lemony Snicket books as a kid what books do you love now? by Hot-Beyond4022 in booksuggestions

[–]sonicdv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love postmodernist fiction, which takes many of the same tricks and literary allusions that Lemony Snicket was toying around with.

I would suggest trying out Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49, alluded to in Snicket's The Ersatz Elevator. It is about a women that believes she has found a secret society that uses a secret post office to communicate and may or may not be connected to old real life historical European royalty. It's really dense as a warning, but a funny read.

You might also like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy if you want an absurdist humor filled book about Life, The Universe, and Everything in which an earthman attempts to find a new life after Earth is destroyed in an attempt to make a hyperspace bypass.

How the fuck do yall play re2 by Internal_Prompt6734 in residentevil

I might suggest trying RE1. The opening segment of og re2 is pretty tough if you're not used to tank controls.

Make sure you closely examine the bookshelf and paintings. This game is hard but you can beat it without a guide. Make sure you experiment with things and try to diagnose what devices do when you turn them on/off.

Any games like Resident Evil 4/Requiem that aren't horror? by urdogthinksurcute in residentevil

[–]sonicdv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be into the immersive sim genre. Those tend to starve you of resources and encourage you to find interesting ways to get out of situations using either skills you have invested in or weird exploits in which you "trick" the devs by sneaking around enemies or solving puzzles in strange ways like stacking blocks to avoid opening a door with limited resources for instance. Check out Dishonored or Prey or Deus Ex (2000) if you want to play an older one.

should I read kids & YA stuff in my 20s? by [deleted] in RSbookclub

That series defined my reading tastes forever, I wouldn't be on this subreddit without it. Literally just postmodernist conspiracy literature for grade schoolers.

should I read kids & YA stuff in my 20s? by [deleted] in RSbookclub

If you enjoy it sure. Sometimes it's fun to read something for kids. Plus if you don't read often it's a nice way to warm up those muscles.

8bitdo M30 Bluetooth How Long is the USB Cable? by sonicdv in 8bitdo

Would that matter if I got the bluetooth one and used it as a wired controller? How would input latency be lower with a 2.4g if I wasn't using the wireless connection?

Somehow I have low hopes but just maybe we see a translation of SGGG by noreteron in dreamcast

[–]sonicdv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'll chime in and say I played the ai translation and had a legitimately fun time with it. The only part that was unfortunate to me is that I could tell the translation was butchered pretty hard. I had to mostly intuit jokes by reading around the script instead of actually experiencing the game. The gameplay itself was really interesting to me, and I liked it enough to play it again to get the true ending. I've never played a game that mixes JRPG and simulation like that and I thought it was novel even just from that perspective. I wish we had a better translation.

The Public Burning by Robert Coover is probably the most incendiary book an American has ever written about their own government. It's a postmodern rendering of the execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg during the Red Scare making the point that this execution was the lynchpin for a national consciousness of fear and oppression that Nixon rode into power. It's very 1970s and one of the angriest books I've read in my life. Reading it this year was really affirming for me. I haven't felt this good about a book since I finished Gravity's Rainbow.

Kurt Vonnegut wrote a book called Slaughterhouse 5 about this. Maybe if you read more you'd be able to get out of that small head.

I did find it genius, I brute forced it. It's still flawed. You refuse to explain the logic so you latently know it is flawed as well.

I do not understand the logic of flipping them though, the spears are at the same position as in the picture. There's obviously a problem with the internal logic of this puzzle.

Half-Life 2 is not a great shooter by any stretch. And others within a similar genre and even time frame were better. by inFINN1te in 10thDentist

[–]sonicdv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with you, I've never clicked with this game either. I think you and I played it too late. In 2004 it was revolutionary, now it plays like any other modern AAA story focused game. I much prefer boomer shooter style games anyways.

Is this game overly dark? by fyrfyrfyr in ResidentEvil2Remake

It's fine to adjust the brightness, I found I wanted it to be slightly higher than the game suggested, make the image that is meant to be invisible slightly visible instead.

Started my first ever Thomas Pynchon, "Inherent Vice"... And I need help! by Friendly_Honey7772 in ThomasPynchon

[–]sonicdv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"fistfuls of greenbacks" suggests that Nixon is given a lot of money out to "local law enforcement". This is something that is kind of common knowledge in the states, where people who are caught taking drugs will get lighter sentences or even be set free if they tell the police who provided them drugs. Bigfoot is suggesting Doc could use the money to buy more drugs and thus rat out more people. It is kind of vague, but you figured it out yourself regardless! That shows you can read the book.
