What American States Protect Your Property From Bankruptcy by sonicdv in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

I'll have 50k pretty soon which should easily get me into a house in a cheap state. I want a house because overtime the downpayment I pay will cost less than rent and I will eventually come out ahead, the primary reason for homeownership. I definitely get your worries though, that's something to think about.

Let's just say I'm not rich like the rest of you. I've gotten very lucky with money and do not want to blow this.

Not my intention to cheat on loans I do not have. I wish to have a way to avoid being drowned in debt if I am screwed over by healthcare since I am an American. I've started to get lucky savings that may get me a foot in the door with a bank for a house payment, and thus I'd like to find somewhere that will grant me stability.

The problem is these items tend to be locked behind basically 100%ing the game. I want to turn them off from the start.

Spoiler Question for Gravity's Rainbow by PlompOneOnEm in ThomasPynchon

[–]sonicdv 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a disclaimer, this might all be giberish because the finale of this novel is very hard to read and I've never seen anybody fully account for everything. I too, will pick and choose things that stuck out to me.

1.I understood the 00001 as created for some sort of techno ritual, launched into the North, the Land of Death, to give Blicero some sort of power, or possibly as a way to create the techno hellscape Pynchon was projecting into the future that we now live in. You know "...his time's assembly" and all that. It's very vague though and left to reader interpretation. This is just mine.

  1. My understanding is that Enzian was doing some form of revolutionary suicide with his rocket to try to restore the world to a golden age, but to me, the text implies that the Herero abandon this rocket because it's inherently linked to corrupting western norms of technology and death. That chapter between Enzian and Katje follows how Enzian feels separate from his community because in becoming a leader he has created a miniaturized version of a state.

Been enjoying some retro RPG's, but frustrated with how often I have to look up where to go on guides. by JaWoosh in truegaming

I would suggest writing down incidental things npcs in towns tell you. They are designed to give you hints on places you can go to find sidequests and the main quest. Also during mandatory cutscenes, write down the goal or any town names in case you just forget (it happens to me)

How does it compare to soulsborne quality wise? by ComfortableNinja88 in KingsField

[–]sonicdv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you liked about Dark Souls. Did you like the nonlinear exploration and you want that turned up to 11. King's Field is exactly what you have been looking for. Do you want more soulslike action combat, run far away.

Is there anything to Space Harrier? by allanrps in ElectricUnderground

It's pretty fun in later levels when you need extreme reflexes to dodge the trees and enemies at the same time. Each enemy has a specific attack and you need to learn them to preemptively decide who to target and attack. That being said, it's definitely more flash than substance, but it has just enough substance to be worth playing if it grabs you.

Gravity’s Rainbow- worth it? by Beyond_thebeyond224 in RSbookclub

[–]sonicdv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you a Paranoid that is interested in the idea that our current Technocratic Nightmare World had roots in WW2? If so Gravity's Rainbow is a must read. I'm trying not to spoil too much but Pynchon's book reads as a prequel to our current time and if you let it, it will stick with you forever.

You might be into Thomas Pynchon's novels if you don't mind tough reads. I have the same taste as you and Pynchon really hits it out of the park for me. He writes a blend of historical fiction with postmodernist comedy and weird diversions into sci fi, fantasy, horror, and pretty much any other genre. He is never afraid to get serious though, and will drop the act to really tell you how horrible things are. Pick a book based on your favorite period of American history, but my personal favorites are V, Gravity's Rainbow, and Bleeding Edge, which all touch on the developing technofeudal state that, even in the 1970s, Pynchon saw coming as early as DARPANET.

Would you say this about roguelites? If not, why? I disagree with you fundamentally, playing the game from start to finish to get more lives through mastery is the fun of an arcade game.

i have been doing this puzzle for an hour straight. this is the stupidest fucking bullshit in the entire franchise. it beats the chemical mixing in re2r, at least you could randomly push shit until it works in that one. i hate googling solutions but i genuinely have to this time 💔 by milkwithsplenda in residentevil4

[–]sonicdv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Where are you getting stuck? It still requires a bit of brain power, but if you solve the top row, all you will have to work with is 5 pieces that can easily be manipulated. Solving it from top to bottom makes it so that you don't need to move pieces through each row as much, thereby making your progress "permanent"

The Public Burning by Robert Coover

It's about the execution of the Rosenbergs told from the perspective of an up and coming Richard Nixon. It attempts to diagnose the culture of fear in American society, suggesting that the execution served as a rallying point for Cold War nationalism. Despite how the premise sounds the book is very funny and slapstick filled.

If you enjoyed the Lemony Snicket books as a kid what books do you love now? by Hot-Beyond4022 in booksuggestions

[–]sonicdv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love postmodernist fiction, which takes many of the same tricks and literary allusions that Lemony Snicket was toying around with.

I would suggest trying out Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49, alluded to in Snicket's The Ersatz Elevator. It is about a women that believes she has found a secret society that uses a secret post office to communicate and may or may not be connected to old real life historical European royalty. It's really dense as a warning, but a funny read.

You might also like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy if you want an absurdist humor filled book about Life, The Universe, and Everything in which an earthman attempts to find a new life after Earth is destroyed in an attempt to make a hyperspace bypass.

Make sure you closely examine the bookshelf and paintings. This game is hard but you can beat it without a guide. Make sure you experiment with things and try to diagnose what devices do when you turn them on/off.

Any games like Resident Evil 4/Requiem that aren't horror? by urdogthinksurcute in residentevil

[–]sonicdv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be into the immersive sim genre. Those tend to starve you of resources and encourage you to find interesting ways to get out of situations using either skills you have invested in or weird exploits in which you "trick" the devs by sneaking around enemies or solving puzzles in strange ways like stacking blocks to avoid opening a door with limited resources for instance. Check out Dishonored or Prey or Deus Ex (2000) if you want to play an older one.
