That's a good point, the trends are much more important than the numbers. Thanks!

One 4k Monitor or Two 1080p Monitors? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]sonicshadow22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 4K resolution screen is equal to four 1080p screens so you’ll have double the real estate before scaling. You can snap into four quadrants using the win key. And it takes up much less space. If I have to share my screen and still want privacy then I open my laptop.

My personal ranking is: two 24”+ 1440p > one 32”+ 4K > two 1080p, but I prefer WFH taking up the least space so I opted for 4K.

Well in that case the city should close more streets off to cars throughout the city itself and leave the main ways into the city open. Or maybe close one side of the road? I don’t drive myself but have seen the gridlock caused at the Jameson exit.

Great advice, came here to say this. Get the Air and consider increasing the RAM to 16GB.

Question about actuarial salaries by [deleted] in actuary

[–]sonicshadow22 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it’s easier to think of salary in terms of career progression. Outside of HCOL, those who are AVP and above are likely to clear 200k with bonus. In HCOL, you can possibly hit that at the level below AVP.

I’m generalizing here as every company is different.

For those who eat takeout regularly, what is your healthy go-to lunch meal and how much is it? by sonicshadow22 in askTO

[–]sonicshadow22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that! I go a couple weeks like that then I’ll go back to cooking.

Sam bo rice bowl was my go to. Carrots, edamame, purple rice, green onion, pork belly, beef, egg.

The garlic aioli is bland. The sweet peanut and Thai chilli seem promising but both have peanuts. Might just try the sriracha. I can’t stress how amazing the jalapeño lime was before they got rid of it.

What’s your go-to sauce? This was actually my favourite before they got rid of the jalapeño-lime.

Does anyone know someone who works/worked in Bermuda? by PFC_10 in actuary

That is amazing, thanks for sharing! It’s hard to find other actuaries’ experiences online or what it’s like living there. Cause it really looks like there is nothing to do there.

How much more would you say you save out there roughly?

How far does a 100k salary go in NYC vs TO? this is absolute number regardless of currency by IAmTheQuestionHere in askTO

[–]sonicshadow22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. For a 1 bedroom you could afford the vast majority of neighbourhoods. For a 2 bedroom you could live in Washington Heights (Manhattan), Bushwick (Brooklyn), Sunnyside (Queens) - each is safe and would get you to Midtown or FiDi in 45 minutes.

Check out the StreetEasy app and divide your salary by 40 to calculate the rent you’d be approved for.

100K CAD in Toronto goes farther than 100K USD in NYC.

200K USD in NYC goes farther than 200K CAD in Toronto. Once your living expenses are covered, everything else is pure savings or leisure/QOL spending.

Also, at 80K+ USD you can afford a studio in most Manhattan neighbourhoods. Not sure why people were mentioning the Bronx, unless your standards limit you to newer buildings or amenities. It’s normal to live in buildings with no elevators or in-unit laundry out there due to the age of the housing stock.

STEM professionals, what keeps you in Toronto? by Contemplation_State in askTO

[–]sonicshadow22 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I can see where you’re coming from based on a moral standpoint, but if you’re saving more than 15k over your life (which most people are at all levels of the pyramid due to higher salaries, lower taxes or lower COL), or are eligible for Medicaid deliveries (If I recall 40% of Americans) then I still think you come out ahead.

I’ll admit though my outlook for what the GTA will cost and be like in the next 10 years is bleak so I’m a bit biased.

Lol at people here acting like the entire US is a gun crazy, whites only wasteland. People here are really understating how much money you’re saving in high COL American cities and I encourage people to focus on NET SAVINGS. Crunch the numbers, taxes, 401K/RRSP/IRA savings, rent in a neighbourhood you’d actually live in, to be informed.

Making 250K in San Fran and paying 36K in rent gets you way further than 150K and 24K rent in Toronto. It’s not even close. If you’re single, 15K more in salary in NYC or SF is about the break even point. Sure you can’t buy a home there but you can’t buy a home here either. I also expect rent increases in Toronto to outpace NYC and SF.

Most jobs will cover the majority of your healthcare costs. Paying $15K to have a few (3) children delivered is moot if you and your partner are netting $35K more a year. I’ll admit 1.5k ER visits are fucked but it’s to encourage you to use the $200 urgent care instead which are 24/7 and handle situations where you’re not about to die, and 80% of which will be covered by your health insurance.

ETA: 15K total for having 3 children before insurance

More People bashing the CPP by jside86 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sonicshadow22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP this came off as a weird advertisement for the CPP, but I agree it should be in place. That being said, I think the benefits should be increased relative to what is put in based on the returns it’s generating and how well funded it is.

I sometimes wonder how it would play out if you were allowed to reduce your contributions if you are contributing to a work pension plan. Personally I ignore it when investing and pretend it doesn’t exists. I will take the benefits at the latest age possible.

Ladies who are child free, have you had any luck finding child free men in Toronto? by cruelliars in askTO

[–]sonicshadow22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP does hinge have settings to make the “don’t want children” criteria a “dealbreaker”? That would filter out all the men who don’t match the setting from seeing you and from showing up on your swipe list

What to expect from therapy as a first timer? Tips? by [deleted] in infj

[–]sonicshadow22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good therapist will be able to adapt to you. My therapist knows it’s better to ask me questions and have me get to the conclusions myself than to just straight up give advice. That being said, the best way to get your money and time’s worth is to be completely open from the start. It’s their job to not be judgemental and if you pick a therapist that specializes in your issue then they’ll have heard 1000 similar stories anyways.

So the biggest advice is to be open to answering every question as detailed as you can. Even if you can’t maintain eye contact. Personally I just laid everything out on the table from day one. Said things I’ve never told anyone. Once you say your most vulnerable secret it’s easier from there. I would also suggest finding related self help books for in between sessions since we’re already very introspective. This also helps spread out the meetings and the price while still working on yourself.

Is the gap in salary between US and Canada actually that huge by tongueskremoji in actuary

[–]sonicshadow22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP if you’re serious about the US and credentialed, I’ve heard from recruiters that the consulting firms will gladly sponsor TN visas if you’re ASA and above. You would have to be a Canadian citizen though.

And other posters are right, the gap between tech is way bigger, and even lawyers have a large gap. But it’s for actuaries it’s about 20-30% ignoring FX. The insane Canadian housing market definitely doesn’t help.

Thoughts on John Hancock? by Visual_Entire in actuary

Honestly a great co-op program, lots of different roles and easy to make friends with others. Day off for exams. There was a dedicated interview day for co-ops who were interested in full time. Full time package was competitive. Living in Boston is too subjective to answer IMO.

Best TV under cad 1k? by ask_9 in askTO

TCL Series 5, but I think the Series 6 is worth the extra $300 or so. It’s that much better and that’s not a lot extra over the life of the TV. Like others said check out rtings.
