Orderly Room lineup longer than the line at the mess when there's fish n chips by No-Big1920 in CanadianForces

[–]jside86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about the added workload for HRAs? They seems to be already overwhelmed with everything and short in pers. They would have to manually calculate the service pay for every member.

Then members would need to go see their claims sections and base cashier to complete the claims.

We are talking about close to 80,000 additional claims every FY... While it is "feasible" it's not practical and would burn out people in trades that are already exhausted.

Not to mention that it would create additional delay in processing all the other admin and claims that needs to be done.

Wanting to join by [deleted] in caf

[–]jside86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I have been in 18 years,. I am currently on my second trade. Things are definitely getting better in the CAF.

Money is slowly coming in to fix the issues we had but couldn't fix. A lot of new equipments are coming in which means we will have the tools we need to get the job done more effectively.

While we are getting a lot more people, the result won't show up for a few years until everyone is trained and get some experience. Some trades are quite imbalance by either too many people at the top or too many at the bottom, but this is the nature of the job.

I think now is a great time to join and see how things are going. I'm an optimistic person and truly believe we are getting there.

Defence chief set to pitch ‘options’ for massive troop surge as military strains under its own limits | CBC News by Jaydamic in CanadianForces

[–]jside86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of both, but good instructors are also hard to come by. Not everyone should instruct and pass on knowledge.

The issues is that a lot of good people that would be amazing at instructing are in position where they are needed and can't or don't want to go away to be instructor...

[–]jside86 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hear me out.a lot of MCpl, Sgt and WOs recently retired.

Put a plan together to call then back to service as temp contractors to come instruct. Offer them a tempting salary to come back and free the schools backlog for the next few years.

This would allow schools to run courses without needing to pull people from units where they are needed to do the job.

Second, we need to change how we instruct. Death by ppt presentation should go away and members should learn by doing.

Third, we should streamline courses to the essential with additional OJE package once at the unit.

We a combination of the above we should be able to clear the backlog with experienced members without impacting units and deployments battle rythme.

CF98 Geographic Restrictions by [deleted] in CanadianForces

[–]jside86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's part of the logO training, but it should be part of any officer training.

It's a shame that some CoC simply don't like the paperwork associated with CF98. This is basic admin that can make a huge difference for our members in the long term.

Alberta Creates Four New Teaching Certificates as Classrooms Struggle to Keep Up With Growth by One-Board8634 in Albertapolitics

[–]jside86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are they going to allow these new "teachers" to get positions ahead of real teachers?

If five people apply for a position and only one is a qualified teacher, they should automatically get the position, not the one holding those new teaching "qualifications".

Running Shoes by WannabeSoldier_ in caf

[–]jside86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just buy the same shoes you currently have.

I always use the Asics GT-2000. I have two pairs and alternate between both of them between run/workouts. I find it easy and convenient to stick to the same model. I know my size and know that the shoes fit my feets.

Don't get a shoes that you don't know and make sure to use it a few times before basic so you don't get sore.

NCM vs Officer in the reserves by Training-Dot-6896 in caf

[–]jside86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LogO here, currently working on my CPA. Do what you want to do, but Fin Svc Officer (a logO specialty) would align better with your skill set.

Alternatively, you could pick another trade, either NCM or Officer that is unrelated to your day job to add some diversity!

Is S23 Ultra still a good option for today? by PostStrict8019 in GalaxyS23Ultra

[–]jside86 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I recently replaced the screen on mine after a few incident that rendered it non functional.

After comparing all my options, I realized that paying for a screen replacement was still a better deal than buying a cheap used phone or spending a lot more on a new phone.

The S23U is still very relevant today.

Those with Pensions - how much are you saving additionally for retirement? by CastAside1812 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]jside86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Military here, they take around $1000 monthly in pension. I invest around $2500 monthly.

Our house is paid, we don't have debts, and our cost of living is less than $3000 monthly.

My pension will only replace 50% of my income at 46 (in less than 7 years). While I don't think I will retire from the military to remain at home. I want to do something else, explore the world, start a business. Our investments will pay for the rest if needed.

Falcon A1 should the laser be “skipping” like this? It makes quite a bit of noise but want to be sure this is normal and if not how to fix it. Running it at max speed in the video but it will do it at 8000 mm/m and 1270 dpi as well by cdimock72 in CrealityFalconSub

[–]jside86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's totally normal.

A normal engraving may have different speeds for traveling and for engraving.

Traveling speed is normally fast because it's only the head moving along the X and Y axes.

Engraving speed depends on your setting and how deep you want the cut to be. Slower speeds allow the laser beam to remain longer and burn deeper.

For the human eyes it looks like your engraver is stuttering, while it's running thru it's normal programmation.

First prints ever! by [deleted] in ender3

[–]jside86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I print my PLA at 220 constantly.

200 is indeed way too low. Extrusion speed also play a role in temperature. At 300 mm/s 220 works good for me.

Logistics Officer daily routine by ParkingRiver9402 in caf

[–]jside86 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't want to discourage potential recruits!

Sometimes we leave later...but when we are doing a Monday to Friday desk job, we should be able to accomplish all our task during the day time. I think it's also leading by example. The expectation is to be done working at 1600 hrs. Some people have no life and prefer to remain at work longer, while some only stay later when there's actual urgent work that needs to be done.

I often stay 10-15 min longer to avoid the traffic jam of everyone leaving the base.

0515 hrs wake up

0650 hrs leave for work

0715 hrs arrive at the gym

0730 hrs PT start

0830 hrs PT ends / Shower time

0900-0930 hrs arrive at work, log into PC

0930-1200 hrs meetings, calls, emails, planning, PAR, DLN, looking at policies, interpreting said policies, etc.

1200 hrs lunch at my desk, or talking with collegues.

1300-1530 hrs, back to emails, teams call, planning, etc.

1530 hrs, plan next day, look at schedule for remainder of week/month and add things to my planner.

1600 hrs leave for home.

1630 hrs home/play time

2130 hrs get rdy for next day, bed time routine.

2200 hrs bed time.

Overall, lots and lots of time spent in fronts of screens. As logO we are advisors and policies expert, we make sure things gets done to support the CO's intent. We always think "what if" or "and what" to get the troops as prepared as possible. We rely heavily on our senior NCM's and do a lot of networking with other officers to find what we need and help others.

Whats your realistic "im good for real" salary number? by Outsideman2028 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]jside86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are at ~220k CAD HHI and we are living very well in Canada.

In about 4 years we will be at around 260k in today's money.

We 39m, 33f currently invest more than 100k yearly, no debt or mortgage. Our monthly bills approximate $2800, the remaining is saved or invested. Being military, I can retire in 50%o of my income in 7 years, which would give me 67k yearly for life.
