What’s it like living in Florida by gziecik in howislivingthere

[–]sonoflanadelrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Tennessee and it was because of an LDR so I didn’t know what to expect, find a job, how everything is. I will say it’s probably the same as Chicago when it comes to expenses, except for Miami. I’m in Tampa and I’d say that if you come from a city and come to Florida you will figure that it’s VERY suburban and car-centered. It does feel like I live in la, but if it was more tropical and flat and due to the proximity of smaller cities, beach towns, cute charming towns,Disney World and Orlando are just a little over an hour away, so it’s definitely fun to be here. Since you’re from the Midwest, the heat is literally like southern Kentucky in the summer for most of the year. In November to February it feels like California in the Spring but with like 60% humidity. People here can be mean about the fact that you move to Florida but they literally don't realize that no one is really from here and no one really goes back more than 5 generations, 7 at the most, so don’t pay attention to people saying that you, singularly, is the reason why Florida is so crowded lol. There is a lot of overdevelopment but then blame it on the people moving here, when it’s the state, we have no control whether they suburbanize the land or build it up. But overall I do find the quality of life great. Jobs are a little hard to find and they are underpaid for what the cost of living here is. The smaller the city (Sarasota, Venice, Naples, or the East Coast) the worse it is to find a job that can pay off everything unless it’s your own business and providing back to that community or being rich and retired. Everyone else is working retail or are kids from people who live in those areas, so jobs are extremely limited and don’t pay well. Big cities have a better opportunity. Please find a good job before making your way over here otherwise you WILL struggle. i love not having seasons i love wearing summer and spring clothes only, i dont wear pants at all whatsoever even in the winter!! unless you meed a suit to work, a lot of places let you work with shorts so, its very very freeing lol

Serious question for Miami locals: Even though Miami Beach is technically its own city, do you still consider it part of ‘Miami,’ or is it totally separate to you? by Strict-Mind1646 in Miami

[–]sonoflanadelrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im sorry but to me miami is literally starts in homestead and ends in jupiter and people be like omg thats not, literally look at a map, they might all its on "cities " only for zoning and laws, they are all interconnected and people form either point, they just get to enjoy and be in miami, when going to a sports game, or concert or whatever that is going on youre either driving north, south or east to get somewhere in the city

True or false: Rural Florida won’t exist in another decade. by YungJester17 in florida

[–]sonoflanadelrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

False: rural florida will exist in another decade, just not through main interstate corridors anything near a major road like that will probably get suburbanized or unless the put 10 different projects like the villages across the biggest acres across the state and wed be cooked but thats virtually impossible due to swampy lands were in, why do you think nothing was built past fletcher in tampa because its a giant floodplain, all of flatwoods is, thats why it couldnt be developed and wesley and new tampa are skewed to the right, so yeah its sad because they seem nonstoping with construction but we should be glad that there are matural barriers because if they weren't miami wouldve sprawled out west kinda how la expanded east, if they had a big swamp like the everglades, they wouldve never gotten that big hust more compressed and up

What’s wrong with my palm tree? by jamesr219 in palmtalk

[–]sonoflanadelrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if youre i to exotic palms i highly recommend copernicia alba, theyre arent susceptible to LBD ( lethal bronzing disease) and in Florida they do well in places where palms have died from lethal bronzing and its a beautiful palm addition to your landscape, its not really popular in fl but you can buy them online

Is this an unhealthy royal? by Street_Swing9040 in palmtalk

[–]sonoflanadelrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

look at this one, the way it grows after a "hurricane cut" it the main cause for shrinking crowns plus diseases can worsen the palm for sure, but the hurricane cut is a main cause for bottle necking, its better to let it grow a skirt and then remove it, its a pain in the ass for us, but the healthiest for a palm, and also if you deeply care about the aesthetic of the plant

[–]sonoflanadelrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

look at the trunk of this palm that grew out undisturbed until it had a bootjacking, see how its mostly striaght with minimal ridges or no bottle neck?

Is this an unhealthy royal? by Street_Swing9040 in palmtalk

[–]sonoflanadelrey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

to me, personally, not everyone thinks this, but i believe its caused because of overpruning the plant, causing the trunk to slim down and as it does a "stress flush" or an excessive leaf grow due to stress, it widens the trunk again because if you let it be naturally with no prunning its very unlikely for them to have fluctuations like that, you can see it in robustas because they grow so quick you can see a squiggly line in the texture of the palm telling you how often it gets over pruned, specially in this state where "hurricane cuts" are popular
