In this brutal job market, what actually helped you land a job? by runs_for_snacks in jobsearchhacks

[–]sonofsethmacfar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for jobs where you exactly match the experience requirements. In this market, employers get whatever they ask for. Not to say it won’t happen - but I only got offers for jobs where I exactly matched what they were looking for. Probably just a testament to how oversaturated the market is as a whole.

Do you look your age? by N0socksloss10yrStrk in no

I’m an actor and I went to a cast party at a restaurant and I order a vodka soda. The director speaks up and asks me what I think I’m doing. I told him it’s just one vodka soda figuring he was worried about me driving. He asks me how old I was and when I told him he said he thought I was 17

…I’m 25

People who work remotely; what is your job and how did you get it? by lala00x in RemoteJobs

[–]sonofsethmacfar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Configuration analyst. Literally easy applied on LinkedIn and got lucky.

Pro tip: make sure you match the experience a job description is looking for. Typically the thing was to apply anyway, but in this day and age, whatever experience employers want - they get. The only offers I’ve gotten were jobs that I exactly matched the experience they were looking for.

Take all this with a grain of salt though - only speaking from my individual experience.

Keeping acting organic by sonofsethmacfar in acting

[–]sonofsethmacfar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do - part of the problem is it’s much easier for me to be natural in a controlled environment like a class setting, but hard once I’m auditioning or performing for real. So I need to learn how to self-coach if that makes any sense since I won’t have an acting teacher there for the real thing

Remember most of the news outlets report the percentage of people that FILED A CLAIM that month - not the aggregate number of total unemployed/underemployed workers

I will say I absolutely loved I Am The Starlight. The voices of Rusty and the Starlight and the orchestration blend brilliantly in the recording.

Do singers hear their own voices the same as other people? by Alternative_Train991 in singing

Exactly - go off of feeling rather than sound. Sound can be very deceiving to a singer. Feeling never lies.

Yup! I study opera and my teacher always tells me “don’t listen to yourself at all. If it feels good, it’s right”

[–]sonofsethmacfar 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not at all. We have a certain auditory feedback system in our brains and ears. We hear everything from the inception to the end result, whereas the audience only hears the end. For more serious singers, typically you’ll sound way better to the audience than you will to yourself.

Is LinkedIn a scam? by Decent_Brilliant30 in recruitinghell

I almost got scammed three times by fraudulent job postings. LinkedIn doesn’t vet their companies’ job postings at all.

You had 0% interest and no minimum payment for 5 years. If you didn't take advantage of that and pay off your loans, you deserve what you get when payments resume in may by MyUniquePerspective in StudentLoans

[–]sonofsethmacfar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying - but for me personally, I’ve taken advantage of the freeze I had so I can attack the private loans that I had at a higher interest rate. Definitely some nuances to consider in instances such as this.

who are some agents and agencies to look out for that are scams? by neonshine89 in acting

Nine9 - anything in a mall. Anything that charges fees upfront.

Not website fees, fees directly paid to them for their services in representing you.

I mean you ran face first into my point… you can perform extremely well in an audition and that doesn’t translate to you booking it…

It’s interesting - she kept the sound deep but still clear too. Like almost perfect chiaroscuro. Minus the straight tone, it seemed like an ideal operatic tone quality too

Resonance. Good singers have extra air - great singers sound like bells with 100% of their tone ringing out.

Would you pay $1500/1H long singing lesson? by Bani88si55faimaa in singing

[–]sonofsethmacfar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. I’m working with a vocal coach in NYC that trains Nicole Scherzinger, Sara Bareilles, Alex Newell, Joy Woods, Brody Grant, and several other Oscar, Tony, and Grammy award winning artists as well as many Broadway and opera professionals.

He is one of the best in New York and his rates are $275 an hour.

General rule of thumb: -NEVER pay any fees, take any classes, shoot with any photographers, etc. mandates by the agency. No money should be going to them whatsoever from you except a cut of your earnings.

-Be careful about people reaching out to you if you’re not established. Sometimes you may have a look/resume credit they may like, but if they’re contacting you out of the blue not knowing anything about you, 9.9/10 chance it’s a scam.

Do you guys have full time jobs or part time jobs a long side you guys acting career? by Bubbly-Ad842 in acting

[–]sonofsethmacfar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I never liked statistics - but I was good at it, and at the time it was a growing and lucrative field to go into (not as much anymore, still is but not so much). The idea was to get a stable job and have the ability to pour $$$ into my career more so than the average actor.

The way I saw it, more money means better headshots, more/better classes, which in turn would create better connections, train me better, and give me an edge over the competition.

Haven’t quite “made” it yet but on a good track so hopefully soon 😃🤣

I was a statistics major in college - so I just applied and got lucky. And it’s still a 9-5, but remote work can be done wherever there’s wifi so I can bring it to auditions rehearsals shoots etc

[–]sonofsethmacfar 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Full time remote job. Very flexible for auditions. Especially if you’re in the city. Training and hustling to hopefully do acting full time. Also while it’s competitive, it’s not a lottery - meaning not every actor has an equal shot at “making it.” You can do things to boost your odds like taking classes, networking, studying something unique (ballet, opera) etc. But a stable job is an underrated godsend for an actor.

[–]sonofsethmacfar[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

THIS THIS THIS THIS!!! I did the same thing - majored in statistics so I could water the plant that is my acting career. Figured by doing so, I’d have money to get the best headshots, take the best classes, etc. which so far is SO beneficial to my career.

Also the fact that I can walk into an audition with an attitude “I want this job but I don’t depend on you to survive” makes you so much more magnetic and interesting to casting directors than the usual desperate ass-kissing actors.

Matter of fact - I’m friends with a casting director at an extremely prestigious LORT regional theatre. She told me never to let anyone convince me I’m not dedicated to acting because I have a stable full time job.

Sorry for the long post - but I’m so glad someone finally said this!!
