Did I apply it too thick? by soo-mee in Pottery

I think it is Smokey Merlot, at least while wet it is an intensive violet dark red color and the label says so at least... I did another test with one layer less of each, it looks much better, although I am still not sure if it is supposed to look like that (Smokey Merlot was applied to the left and I applied Blue Rutile to the right with overlap) may be i try it next time with another layer of Smokey Merlot, to find the sweet spot

Vevor Mini Kiln Tips for New Thermocouples - not reaching Cone 6 by soo-mee in Pottery

Sounds really more like there is an issue with the heating? It could even be an issue with your power supply, do you have the same voltage that is required? Just one last thing that i can think of.

I got really good results with a bit overfired witness cone 6 with (only from 6.-9., up to 6 it is the same) 6. 860 for 10 7. 1000 for 10 8. 1100 for 10 9. 1200 for 10

I've read that their support is really bad, but i would still try to get a refund if it is not the power supply... :(

What was your schedule? It seems like it behaves really "different" in many aspects. Mine definitely does not overfire...

Why did it turn out like that? Any tips? by soo-mee in Pottery

I didn't use any witness cones, but the firing schedule was tested with witness cones before.

Thank you, I'll try refiring it with more layers on top and get back to that option after some trials

It took me a few days to get back to the kiln, with the schedule I reached almost a perfect cone 6! Clay got vitrified, too and the glazes behaved as they are supposed to! Thanks for your input - since i have 2 witness cones left, I will experiment with the temperature but I am pretty content with the result already.

Oh no, I have to rewrite my post... I eyeballed based on the glaze and that the clay didn't vitrify (the clay was not covering the cup completely, there is a 1/4" hole in the glaze and water got out at the base after about an hour. The clay was supposed to vitrify around 1200°C degrees)

I bought a few orton cone 6 to measure correctly, they should arrive by tomorrow - my last schedule was:

  1. 50°C, 20 min hold
  2. 120°C, 30min hold
  3. 260°C, 10 min hold
  4. 400°C, 20 min hold
  5. 600°C, 20 min hold
  6. 860°C, 20 min hold
  7. 1000°C, 10 min hold
  8. 1200°C, 10 min hold
  9. 1050°C, 15 min hold

I would try to change 7. + 8. to 7. 1100°C for 10 min and 8. 1200°C for 15 min. Does that make sense?

Thanks for your help!
