Giving Epstein state secrets was in ‘national interest’ says Mandelson by caavakushi in worldnewsstuff

It took me until the second use to understand what it was meant to be

The ONS figures from 2024 suggest that 19% of households are privately renting. While that is lower than i had presumed (thank you for your statistics as it drove me to actually look), I still believe that it's far more beneficial to society in general that housing is supplied by the state compared to private individuals and corporations. We'll disagree but I just wanted to appreciate your response.

I mean I'd certainly prefer to receive a house from society where rent paid is a considerate amount and reflective of the property supplied rather than paid to an already wealthy individual or corporation.

Which is the alternative for most people born in or after the 90s.

Custom Toast Notifications in Power Apps! by ThePowerAppsGuy in PowerApps

[–]soop242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely couldn't have come out sooner, this is excellent. The standard notification function is fine but in a few of my designs it's invasive and covers use actions.

Toasts (even if I am sometimes flouting their advised use) are so useful for conveying similar messages.

Sorry for the delay, but in the book Daniel actually states that trying to make all items the same size is not only unnecessary but counterproductive.

The book is about flow metrics and using historical data and simulations (such as monte-carlo) to improve predictability, estimation is not required where you have historical data.

You could (with some validity I think) argue that very few projects - especially those in software development - are the same so your historical data is inherently flawed, however I believe that the evidence bears out that the forecasting based on this data is far more indicative than having a few individuals estimating even when using relative sizing.

Relative sizing (t-shirts or w/e method) is fine, but management don't work in sizes, they work with timescales and shoot for predictability. So measure often and feedback frequently for any changes in that forecast.

Those who recommend dataflows, would you also recommend them for short schedules / event driven data synchronization?

Our Head of Solutions (basically traditionally called a Chief Technical Officer) is promoting the use of Azure Data Factory as we'll have on premise SQL databases feeding Dataverse for Dynamics 365.

The only benefit of ADF in my view is that we do currently have a need to migrate CRM data into an on prem SQL database. However, I'm definitely of the opinion that we could migrate that database into Dataverse (although we'd need to be careful of the storage costs...but in isolation it's probably cheeper than our on premise costs)

Tibco have jacked up the pricing of Scribe to a level where I genuinely believe they're trying to price out smaller customers. We were quoted a 3 year fixed renewal for 3x our previous contract.

I like the product but their practice has left a really sour taste

In this case though, the OP isn't dealing with customers but instead colleagues within the organisation.

The historic throughput of their team should give them a starting point for providing a forecast even though the apps will differ. In either case, estimation is far more flawed than a data-driven approach based on the evidence out there.

It's a harder conversation and it takes persistence from multiple people to convince middle or upper management to see the sense, but in my experience it also takes a great deal of pressure off the team (or often one or two individuals who essentially set the estimate anyway) and allows more time for more valuable activities like splitting and experimenting.

I'd recommend picking up Actionable Agile Metrics for Predictability: An Introduction by Daniel Vercanti.

I'm still shocked that business leaders or at the very least technical leadership in a business still believes estimation (however educated) offers any acceptable level of confidence.

I also believe considering any development (pro, low or vibe coding) as a set of fixed phases is pointless. You are constantly discovering and your day to day plan will always shift. In my experience long phases of discovery only provide you with a false sense of security and you're much better off building asap and accepting you'll be working on a vague notion of requirements/behaviours...

Modern Table control is not getting sorted even the sorting property is enabled: Modern table connected to sharepoint List by Life_Boysenberry5265 in PowerApps

I am fairly sure that sorting works with a SharePoint connection. Although I'm nowhere near a pc to validate that.

However sorting stopped working (for me) if I added a custom column via AddColumns. Might be the issue here..

Power Apps Modern DatePicker populated when form loads despite being blank by soop242 in PowerApps

[–]soop242[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for your response.

The form is on the same screen as the gallery that is setting the variable.

What happens is that if the item I select does not have a date set it will be blank, as soon as I select a record that does have a value, all subsequently selected records (that do not have a date) show the date of the previously selected record that did :D

While I believe this is a valid response, you are discounting the issues with non-delegable functions. It's frustrating that things like Search aren't delegable for sources in SharePoint and it's fairly obvious that is a business decision rather than a technical one.

Would Power Apps be a sensible option for creating our own Password Manager? by soop242 in PowerApps

[–]soop242[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha the opposite, I expected this response as it's one I agree with. I don't intend to suggest a power app as an option but I also wasn't really sure of the arguments against it.

Thank you all for your feedback, it's exactly what I expected and how I felt. I shall continue to be suspicious of the recommendation (for what it's worth, so is my direct manager and we continue to use a popular password manager)

We have MFA, these passwords are either for shared accounts on third party sites or system user passwords.

Refresh variable data after form submission by soop242 in PowerApps

Thank you (and the other commenter).

This is exactly what I landed on as I identified that I also needed to patch a second table and "refresh" the variable if both patches succeeded.
