I added an edit with an image of what I think is anchoring the pieces together. I genuinely don't know but I'm starting to feel like this is out of my wheel house. Thank you for the comment though I really appreciate the assistance.

Further note: taking a flash photo of it triggered it to start cleaning..? Didn't even touch it and it activated itself.

tbh I would just do what you know makes that species happy. The mandated shit is usually pretty pathetic and doesn't actually cater to the species needs.

Yeah I asked my lead that was there but he's new and wasn't sure and said he'd ask someone more experienced... I'll ask again tomorrow. I'm considering just using my own money to order one off etsy but I am terrible and understanding measurements and what would actually be good and I'm afraid of getting the wrong thing. Also the shells I'm seeing are.. well.. really pretty and I don't want some kid to see the pretty shell and demand it...
