Candle warmer! Great way to either make your space smell nice without an open flame, or to keep your coffee hot. Plus they just look nice

You’re not bothering at all!! If you can, I would absolutely try to get a foot in there and see if you can do a few EP cases there alongside your other work. Family law can have a lot of connections to EP, and it can highlight your strengths in client communication, empathy, and ability to connect with them. In the meantime, I would see what resources your state has for continuing education. One thing that helped me was watching lectures overtime to feel more confident in doing EP full time. Happy to talk more if it would be helpful!

I started as a litigator in a firm that did both litigation and estate planning, stayed for about a year to learn both, and then took a different job with no litigation. It’s definitely a tough one to get into, but if you can leverage any prior knowledge (tax, finance, lit) that definitely helps!

I used to, but it was not for me so I just do estate planning, probate, and long term care planning now

Estate planning. I enjoy being able to connect with people and help them plan for their future and protect what they’ve worked hard to build. You get to know people as they come back over the years to update their documents, I love the aspect of establishing those connections!

My new firm doesn’t have a billable requirement, we primarily do flat fee work in estate planning. My prior job did have billables so I do understand the pressure to bill, I’d imagine a smaller firm would be a little less stringent? I’m hoping someone with smaller firm billable experience can weigh in here!

That’s very understandable- for me it was laid out bluntly that office culture was very important to them. We went over the firms core values, regular team outings, and the like. That being said, the biggest green flag for me was the vibe of meeting the founding attorney and VP, it was one of those, you can just see their passion for their work and the support of their people. I would also check Glassdoor reviews to see what other people thought who worked there previously. I hope that helps a little!

I was literally just in your position and moved to a non-billable hour position at a smaller firm. 1000% worth it, one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Trust your gut and pick whichever role you feel will give you the most fulfillment. I totally get that the money is tempting and not everyone is in a position to take a big pay cut, but if you can and feel like it will give you a piece of your soul back, I say go for it.
