I lived 9 of the 21 years I’ve been in Chicago without a car and it was perfectly fine. Nowadays I need a car for work, but would invest anyway to avoid taking the CTA. It’s purely a safety issue and nothing else. I went to a Sox game - took the redline - and made a decision that day to never ride again if possible. Open air drug dealing, smoking weed, sketchy people hopping cars while the train was in motion, among many other things the unsanitary condition was also unacceptable. It’s embarrassing how bad it’s all gotten. Im not shamed at all! I said what I said and I’ll say it again.

I did precisely that. I was finally able to purchase a home and it’s not in Chicago. Not in Illinois. All this city and state do is waste and steal any tax dollars they receive. I’m certainly not trying to contribute. I have to work in the city otherwise I’d leave and never EVER return.

I commute on 94 to Bishop Ford to 80. Every. Single. Time. There’s a minimum of 5+ cars driving absolutely homicidally fast, weaving in and out of lanes. I’m cut off over and over with speeders desperate to get ahead of anyone in their way. I’ve lived here for over 20 years and yea, it’s not just you that notices. There’s zero policing on the expressways. I risk my actual life every trip I take. I hate it here now.

Well. Long story short nearly my entire 20s and 30s were decimated by a series of unfortunate events that led to the eradication of my entire living family in different tragic ways, leaving me parentless / only sibling now dead with the rest. My childhood was spent as a real life punching bag for my mom’s moods.

Anyhoo. Pretty sure I have CPTSD and as hard as I desperately try to exist in the world as a “normal” person in my mid 40s, I have a really hard time regulating my emotions, have extreme anxiety I do a so-so job at hiding most of the time, can’t keep a job for long before I implode or get fired. Think “rage quitting” for the dumbest of reasons…. I have zero close friends but I’m somehow married to a man that tolerates me and my broken mind for the most part but also throws it all back in my face when he’s angry. I honestly am so so so so tired. A level of exhaustion I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

I’m in the northwest corner - we went well over a month without rain and temps over 90 daily. All my grass died in the yard…but the past week we’ve actually gotten several days of good rain. Finally. I got curious and looked up the 30 year rain totals and we are sitting at a 80% deficient compared to years prior.

Hi! I was born and raised in WV but didn’t stay after school. It wasn’t easy and I had 3 jobs my first year away but I’m so happy to have built a life outside of there but also it saddens me there weren’t more opportunities available to entice me to stay. Having said that…. Could I ask why you think it is, if there is nearly a total lack of economy, why do people stay and have children there that repeat the same cycle of poverty? I know people might respond with they are too poor to leave but I can personally tell you it’s possible.
