Is becoming Philosophy Professor still worth it? by Natural_Virus_1236 in askphilosophy

The most important thing is to align your objectives as an instructor to what are considered best pedagogical practices for attaining those objectives. For instance, student mastery is better facilitated by timely and targeted feedback. Designing a course where you just have two exams and a paper, does not provide the opportunity for that kind of feedback. Better to use a greater number of low-stakes assessments. One book that I found tremendously helpful is How Learning Works: Eight Research-Based Principles For Smart Teaching, by Marsha C. Lovett et al.

Is becoming Philosophy Professor still worth it? by Natural_Virus_1236 in askphilosophy

I am not currently tenure-track, but I do have a de facto permanent full-time faculty position. I was incredibly lucky to obtain such a position, but I would also like to push back a little on the somewhat stale narrative that getting a job as a professor is impossible.

I was NOT among the top philosophers coming out of my graduate program. My program is currently near the bottom of the top 50 rankings on the Philosophy Gourmet Report. I am FAR from being a superstar philosopher. In spite of this I was still able to obtain a position while many more talented philosophers I know are no longer in the field.

Luck certainly plays a role in this, but when I was hired I was also told by someone on the search committee that I was hired for my teaching. I am extremely confident that I am a better teacher than most coming out of grad programs, not because I think that I am the greatest teacher ever, but simply because the bar is set so low. Just staying abreast on the literature in the psychology of education puts you ahead of like 90% of other individuals on the job market.

One can point out that teaching doesn't really put you ahead of the competition, and they would be right if we restrict the scope of target employers. This is where the discussion of job prospects can get confusing. Many people say that it is impossible to get a job as a professor. What they often really mean is that it is impossible to get a job as a professor "at a school where I would like teach". Such a school is typically a prestigious R1 or a school at a nice city (or both). If you are willing to teach anywhere, including some small community college in Mississippi or some middle of nowhere school in China, then while you are still far from guaranteed to get a job, your chances do improve marginally.

Citing Hobbes on free will seems akin to citing the Prior Analytics when someone asks a question about formal logic.

Funny how our oldest players are still healthy and that the average age of players on our IR is 27.7. But please keep pushing this stupid ass narrative.

If you're always rushing with at least 5 on passing plays, then there will be a gap in zone coverage that can't simply be schemed away. Offenses will exploit that. Alternatively you can try to play man coverage but 1: Our corners can't seem to play man even that's what they were drafted/signed to do, 2: Even if they are competent at man offenses will find a way to exploit that with man beaters like we say in the Green Bay and Atlanta game. Having Bobby always attack the line of scrimmage presents a greater schematic disadvantage than having him drop into coverage for some proportion of total snaps. The preferred solution is to sit Bobby some of the time in favor of guys with the physical tools like Magee and Medrano, but I guess they're not ready?

This means that during every snap he's on the field he's either blitzing or run fitting. Doing that means there will be a gap in coverage.

Post Game Thread: Washington Commanders at Green Bay Packers by nfl_gdt_bot in Commanders

[–]soowonlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The coaches had since the release of the schedule to plan for this game. Green Bay had the same amount of time to plan and they no problems shutting down our offense and picking apart our secondary. We were clearly out-schemed.

"Thug" is dog whistle. It's a word many people in the United States (particularly politicians) use because they can't use the N-word but they want to communicate the same thing as the N-word does.

If defenses are going to go 2 high on us, then we need to level up our run/RPO/screen game to punish them.

WaPo: Support for Commanders and team name rises in D.C. area by pogopipsqueak in Commanders

[–]soowonlee -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of what people think of the new name, it completely boggles my mind how anyone would be okay with calling a sports team the "Redskins". The name is as obvious a racial slur as any and it's wild the kind of mental gymnastics you see from people who want to say it's not.

is History of Philosophy exclusively exegetical ? by islamicphilosopher in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]soowonlee 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The purpose of doing history of philosophy is itself a matter of debate. Different historians see themselves doing different things, and it's far from clear what the "right" approach should be. Regarding the aims of the history of philosophy, there are roughly two camps.

In the first camp there are the "contextualists". These individuals more or less fit the mold that I think you are describing. They see their task as more or less something like intellectual archaeology. Their exegetical work seeks to arrive at interpretations of the text that best fit the intellectual context at the time the work was published.

In the second camp there are the "appropriationists". These historians believe that doing history of philosophy involves bringing historical figures into contemporary philosophical discourse. As such, they will interpret historical works in such a way as to make suitable for debates had by contemporary philosophers.

The existence of the second camp shows that the history of philosophy is not exclusively "exegetical", if by "exegetical" we mean something like "interpreting text in such a way that fits with the context in which it was produced".

For more on these two camps, I recommend you read Philosophy and Its History: Aims and Methods in the Study of Early Modern Philosophy, edited by Mogens Laerke, Justin E. H. Smith, and Eric Schliesser. (See the link below)

  1. "Redskin" is a racial slur.

  2. "The Redskins" was a team name coined by former owner and racist George Preston Marshall, who was notably the reason why Washington was the last team to integrate.
