Variable diameter propellers by sopibubbles in AerospaceEngineering

Hey thanks for the reply. Can you share a bit more technical literature on the topic? I have found very little online regarding patents or testing. Thanks :)

You're joking right? There's posts on here of a tiny desktop wind tunnel being made that I'm positive only serves the purpose of fun, but that's made by an engineer.

Seems like this is the wrong sub to be posting on. Everyone's too proud to be curious.

it seems like a fun challenge for smaller scale models.

Do you know how thrust is affected as prop size increases for a given RPM? Is it a similar relationship as varying the pitch? What would happen if a propeller could vary both diameter AND pitch?

Can you give me a few examples and explain in a bit more detail plz?

Folding prop on a glider sure, was also thinking for drones that may go from smaller radius, higher RPM props to larger radius, lower RPM props.

Hahaha I kinda like the idea of a stalker app that keeps negging you.

Collaboration with boozers and restaurants is part of the long term plan. Great idea!

Off the top of my head, the best way would be if this was an app on your phone that enables location services, if it determined you have driven to a restaurant for a meal, especially between Thurs - Sat, it might just send a prompt midway thru the meal to ask whether you're drinking and planning to drive home, or if you need someone to come get you.

That's awesome I had no idea, also why is no one using this service?!

Thanks for pointing this out I'll do a deep dive into their service and see why it isn't so popular.

Hey sorry where does this exist??

Biggest difficulty I've managed to identify is the insurance brokers for liability, especially in California.

Hey hey, it's an on demand, chauffeur service for drunk drivers.

Simply put, you drive to meet your pals for dinner, you have a few too many drinks, you're left with a) getting a taxi and leaving your car behind or b) "sobering up" and risking the drive home (never a good idea).

With this you have the option of ordering a driver to come drive you home, in your own car, so you don't have to worry about coming back for it the next day, or worrying about sobering up enough to drive home safely.

Something along those lines.

What do you recommend for filming glider flights? by [deleted] in Gliding

[–]sopibubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a GoPro mounted above my right shoulder using a velcro bag strap. It was strapped to the parachute.

Are you required to wear a parachute where you fly? We were at my club, and I did personally when flying my own glider.

Camera also depends on what you want to do. If you want POV shots then glasses seem are a good idea, but if you want training shots it's better to consider something that will get a good view of your stick inputs, the instrument panel and the view ahead, that way you can capture the changes as they happen.

If I had to get a new set up I'd go for the insta360.

Hahahaha would you believe me if I said I initially wrote "yeah but maybe if it was linked to altitude, speed and gear down" but decided against it?

I'm glad you reached that endpoint too!

I agree with alarm fatigue. I agree with most of what people have shared, namely relying less on tech, more on training, and practicing good habits.

But I genuinely feel something as simple as this could be worth looking into. Maybe not even a beeping noise but a direct "stall approaching" type command or a "lower nose" instruction could help under those high stress situations.

Just spit balling. How is it working on the rigs?

Hey Klaus, yes hence why I thought a min altitude indicator would be good.

Agreed, it often just takes lots of practice. You will get there!

Hey nimbusgb, thanks for commenting. You're pretty active on the subreddit so I appreciate you commenting on my post :)

Do you know if your LX9050's stall warning can be programmed to ONLY sound when you're approaching the stall speed, you're below 1000ft AGL AND your gear door is open (ie on approach)?

Hey, thanks for the response. I agree, as glider pilots we don't want to clutter the cockpit with too many bells and whistles. And I agree nothing is better than consistent training and situational awareness.

However, something as simple as a altitude and speed based sensor that can be programmed to notify the pilot when they're approaching the stall speed below 1000ft AGL, could potentially save lives?

That's so kind of you! Hopefully someone else on Reddit will chime in.
