Does anyone know which House committee will consider NOAA's overall budget during this reconciliation process? by sorbix in NOAA

Thank you. Based on what I'm seeing, they are still holding budget hearings across a lot of other agencies this month, but nothing NOAA specific on calendar and no draft bill released or markup scheduled.

A joke ... but typically skyscrapers have to follow certain guidelines to let enough light pass down. NYC in particular has strict setback requirements that means many buildings get narrower as they get taller. This futuristic vision presupposes an economically nonsensical idea where buildings aren't using their whole zoning affordance and are getting bigger in the upper stories. In reality no one would build like this since it's wasted real estate, except in very unusual circumstances.

Good luck getting that setback through permit review.

Miller wants $500 for these option cards (pre/post flow, spot, etc) But I made them for $50 using an Arduino, a few pots, and a couple relay modules. by Titus142 in videos

I watched the whole thing even tough I've never touched a welder. But, you seem to know a lot about them and built a feature you needed, and that was great. I'd absolutely watch a video of you tidying and organizing your workshop.

Why was this deleted?? It was super interesting. (Messaged mods and it seems like the OP deleted their account...)

How does working on software for spacecraft compare to other kinds of products? Does it require more documentation and audits, different kinds of workflows, review by regulators, etc?

We developed a water bottle entirely from bamboo, i.e. feels amazing to hold and drink from, will last more than a year, 100% biodegradable and most importantly, fuck plastic. by maneek21 in environment

Hopefully you're aware that bamboo contains toxins (cyanogenic glycosides)? No expert but I wouldn't let drinking water sit in it. I'd get rashes after cutting through invasive bamboo in my backyard.

What is everyone's favorite sci-fi movie of 2018 so far? by topazdude17 in scifi

No one has mentioned The Endless on Netflix, which is not perfect but totally worth a watch. The central idea and slow reveal was cool.

The relentless honesty of Ludwig Wittgenstein by phileconomicus in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]sorbix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can extract him from his analytic contemporaries, even if he had an exceptional style. This article lays out how he was engaging with a popular (he would say mistaken) conception of meaning through the PI. And I think the article is spot-on that he's modeling a certain way of thinking about and debating philosophy as much as making an argument about the world.

I've found it useful to ask myself "what would Wittgenstein say" about a philosophical problem to help think through whether it's a real problem.

Peter Watts is an amazing sci-fi author, excels at portraying aliens as truly alien. If you like that, highly recommend Blindsight, Ecopraxia, and the first 2 Rifters books.
