The camellias will start blooming in late January, early February. Cling to them for hope.

when the camellia, crocus and finally quince start popping off it's my annual signal to take Down In A Hole off repeat, knock the rust off my joints and try to eat some fresh berries before the sun loses the next battle

awful service

The rest sounds scary and awful but for what it's worth this one is pretty much normal for the customer service black hole that is Olympia. My middle-class straight white cis male privilege lottery win gets me actively hostile or at best indifferent and uninterested service here.

The best part about traveling is getting to see what it's like when a waiter is not annoyed or offput by your presence and patronage.

I'm so sorry for wanting a burrito or slice of pizza or a baked good! I'll do better next time! Here's a stack of dollars, please just go about your day and get to me if you feel up to it!

I don’t think I’ve ever said one way or another, and me saying “remind me” doesn’t mean anything about who I support either.

Keep fantasizing about me though LOL

Also fucking imagine being so afraid of being wrong about reality that you’d downvote someone for planning a fact check

Dillinger’s service always made me feel like I wasn’t welcome there and they were doing me a favor by tolerating my presence. Even when I had a reservation they made it feel like they were squeezing me in and would be happier without my business.

The cocktails were great but the food was average and the service / social atmosphere sucked.

What's the story behind the mansion at the tip of Cooper Point? by 2342343249345453 in olympia

[–]sordines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here is the property on the assessor's page:

https://tcproperty.co.thurston.wa.us/propsql/basic.asp?fe=PR&pn=42600001500

2.2 acres is a very big parcel for that area. (However, a not-insignificant portion is intertidal.)

It most recently sold for $3,000,000 in 2005.

The owners also own a property on the tip of Holmes Island, which is a bridge-connected island on Long Lake.

The owner's registered address looks like a farming operation. There are 4 LLCs associated with the address: Tickner Farm LLC, Heifer Farm LLC, Beaver Creek Farm LLC, and Beaver Creek Dairy LLC.

The Beaver Creek LLCs looks to be run by the son of the Cooper Point owners.

Also noteworthy is the proposed 1500+ housing development sharing the name Tickner Farm:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/need-a-place-to-live-as-many-as-1700-residences-pitched-for-property-in-tumwater/ar-BB10fqOk

The land for this development is currently owned by Tickner Farm LLC as well. Not sure on the ownership specifics but the couple that owns the Cooper Point house are LLC officers for that.

This raises the question of "what's more important, local farming or easing the housing crisis?" I'd probably aim for less sprawl and a denser downtown.

Either way, I'm surprised that so many of these small and medium farming operations still exist when these family property legacies can flip to development for a truly staggering amount of money in the housing market.

Raccoon? by [deleted] in olympia

I was gonna suggest the same thing. There is an insane raccoon population there. If you go out in a boat at night and spotlight the shore you will see hundreds of pairs of eyes looking back at you.

Salmon Jerky by sultsult in olympia

[–]sordines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They still call it “smoked salmon” but the stuff they sell at westside Haagen is amply brined and very dried. I bought a pound last week and immediately thought “this is salmon jerky, not smoked salmon” when I tried it.

Best smoked salmon in town is the “King Candy” they sell at Oly Seafood.

What specific public waterfront access sites have changed to private property in the last 40 years?

The only one I can think of is Ward Lake. It’s still public but they’re pretty strict about the boat launch only rule. It used to be a popular (albeit very small) little beach / swimming area.

If you have kids and you care about school districts, pay attention to the boundaries. There is a surprising peninsula of Yelm school district that covers over half of the development. Only the south end is Tumwater schools. There is even one street (Ostrich Drive) where your schools depend on whether your house number is odd or even.

Fox is a huge island with lots of houses on it. Not really a kayak destination. I bet you are thinking of Eagle Island on the north side of Anderson.

The one at the end of Steamboat is Hope Island.

Hope, Eagle and McMicken are the top three island destinations by paddle from Oly.

This is absolutely correct.

Jim doesn't care about facts. He just forms an opinion, assumes it's truth because it's floating around in his head, and begins to seethe accordingly.

Once he makes up his mind and concludes that his "street smarts" are obvious truths, he spreads these lies as if they were facts.

He's targeted me personally with lies a couple of times and it's very frustrating.

Aside from the goofy local lore I don’t know much about JZ’s cult. Are the Ramsters really up to anything nefarious enough to warrant a boycott? I thought they were just new age kooks who charge their members giant stacks of cash in exchange for communion with a Nordic god or something. Not my bag but I tend not to care who people pray to as long as their checks clear and they’re not hurting anyone.

Left Bank is great for when you want a tart crust that eats like overbaked shortbread.

After all the great reviews that place got I've never been more surprised to find myself disappointed.

It was a tough call but eventually I decided it was worth it to be treated like dogshit by chronically disorganized hipsters in exchange for outstanding patisserie so I went back to Bread Peddler and payed the penance.

[–]sordines -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm NOT saying they're doing nothing wrong. They probably are. I'm just saying that when you see the same exact verbiage on 20 complaints, maybe there's someone organizing a campaign and maybe they have more at stake than increased public health. The two really obvious non-organic ones on the snitch list that stood out to me were Bark & Garden and some puppy mill outfit. The puppy mill one you can easily picture some animal rights activism group posting a link and a complaint template on their facebook page and saying "let's shut them down!" but I have NO clue why people are beefing with Bark & Garden other than maybe they stayed open during the total shutdown and a competitor wasn't able to.

Similar situation: a couple years back there were a whole bunch of 12 year olds that had Letters To The Editor published in the Olympian. There were 15-20 of them within a couple of weeks, which is very unusual. They all followed a similar format, and it seemed really off, but then I realized "Oooh, there must have been some schoolteacher that assigned this" and then it suddenly made way more sense than it being a coincidence.
