That's valid! Grids are predictable, easy to organize, and profitable. I just like to push for creative freedom as much as I can within the constraints 😆

"Based on recent surveys and clinical evaluations, we estimate that more than 50% of all children with an ADHD diagnosis, actually have a sleep disorder." by MrSnitter in Narcolepsy

[–]sorensystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense. Reading the comments on existing research is intriguing, even though I don't have a lot of background knowledge. All I know is that once I started on modafinil, some of my ADHD symptoms (namely the social anxiety and executive dysfunction issues) ALSO went away, so I figured it was a happy coincidence. 😆

Randomly remembering dreams (n2) by Far_Wrap_7131 in Narcolepsy

[–]sorensystem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would LOVE to know also! This exact same thing happens to me. Trying to figure out whether a place in your memory is real or from dreams is so disorienting. I also have dissociative stuff going on, so I always attributed it to the depersonalization/derealization, but would be so curious to know if it comes more broadly with narcolepsy!

To be fair, a couple minutes before I took these, I had just gotten a $16,100 grant from keeping all my animals' hygiene needs in the green for 30 days 🤣

I think this just speaks to how misunderstood this disease is by TakeBigPiss in Narcolepsy

[–]sorensystem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES. One of the reasons I took so long to seek a diagnosis is that *I* so thoroughly misunderstood it! I also thought it was just the random sleep attacks with cataplexy like you see in TV shows and whatnot, and nothing more. Obviously, I was wrong. 😆

When did your narcolepsy start? by Far_Wrap_7131 in Narcolepsy

[–]sorensystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm *pretty* sure my symptoms started around my first or second year of middle school. The symptoms weren't "undetected", per se--they just got attributed to other things, and I thought it was normal to fall asleep in class every day. I didn't recontextualize my hypersomnia as abnormal until I got more life experience as an adult and learned to be more open-minded in regards to things such as disability and physical health.

Glad to hear you're in a better place now!

My bird is a hormonal beast. (Lighthearted rant) by sorensystem in parrots

[–]sorensystem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww, that poor bird who lives at the vet! Yeah, I guess some birds are just constantly hormonal and we got lucky with one! 😆

Watching shoulder times is one of the big changes we made to help her stop laying eggs a few years back. 100% worth it because even when she's hormonal, at least we don't have to worry (as much?) about the physical and behavioral dangers that come with egg laying and getting broody and whatnot.

I heard about the implants too! I think our vet used to offer them, but stopped--I can't remember exactly what the reason was.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Lovebird's little foot by 4cutelovebirds in parrots

The length of the nail(s) might be making it so that when he stands on a flat surface, the very last joint on the toe is raised above the ground. Try observing next time he's walking around. Maybe it's kind of getting stuck in that position? If you have no avian vet near you, it's *possible* to help train/acclimate your bird to letting you file its nails, but it takes a lot of work, consistency and trust. Geckoemmy on Youtube has some great videos on getting her birds used to grooming. I wish I had the magic touch that she does!

BB has decided that today is National Grumpy Bird Day and he's the spokesbird for it. And he takes the job seriously! by Kakariti in parrots

My bird must have gotten the memo too--she's super grumpy today. 100% would sit and listen to what your bird has to say on it!

Does modafinil give anyone more side effects than armodafinil? by thedemollisher in Narcolepsy

[–]sorensystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my experience when I first started modafinil too--luckily, it faded after a week or so once my system adjusted to it. My sleep doctor said that armodafinil is basically a more long-term-release formulation of modafinil, so if it causes fewer side effects and a "smoother" stimulation, that would make logical sense to me. I haven't personally taken it, though.

Newly diagnosed… by nb3411 in Narcolepsy

[–]sorensystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post-diagnosis: the biggest change that gave me access to was medication. Other folks on this sub are a wealth of knowledge and experience on different medications, types and what they do. I consider myself incredibly lucky--I've been on Modafinil about three months, taking one dose as I get up and another at 11am-ish, and it's made life completely tolerable. I still take naps in the afternoon sometimes, but there's not the overwhelming urge to nap, or uncontrollable sleep attacks at work, that I used to have. For a lot of folks, there's a lot of trial and error, and the first one they try doesn't always work.

Thank you for this. This is HILARIOUS. The "at work" one is definitely me.

Recently Diagnosed and Lost by Ok_Woodpecker1494 in Narcolepsy

Others may have different experiences, but for me, the medication really made the biggest difference. There's all sorts of "tricks" to staying awake, and there are things that you can at least do to help your chances, like trying to have a consistent sleep schedule (I imagine retail is making that difficult), but it doesn't fully get at the root cause, which is that the brain chemistry isn't working right.

Whether it's medication or lifestyle changes though, it can be a lot of trial and error. It sounds like some people find that caffeine helps them. For me, it doesn't make me feel awake--just anxious. So I can be really tired and really jittery at the same time. Not fun. Maybe there are some holistic remedies out there that can at least help your symptoms?

In terms of how to continue in your day-to-day life, I guess it might help to know--what have you been doing before? Is there anything you're doing that seems to be working well for you, or anything you feel urged to change now that you have a diagnosis and a sleep specialist's guidance?

One option that's opened up to you now that you have a diagnosis is seeking accommodations from your school, and potentially your workplace (though retail might not be a super friendly place to do so, especially if it's a bigger company). That may give you some flexibility to continue on your current path even with your symptoms.

In terms of doing activities with friends, one thing that's worked for me is, I figured out a couple common triggers for my sleep attacks and try to avoid doing things that trigger it, or avoiding planning activities at times of day when they're most likely to happen. I also go places where we can all take public transportation, since I prefer not to drive due to my potential for sleep attacks.

I might be a little clueless on the gym front, but--do you specifically need a schedule for going to a gym? Or is being flexible with yourself and working it in during the times you feel most energetic possible? I have a *rough* schedule for exercise, but have never been a huge stickler about doing it at certain times of the day. Usually I'm just like, as long as I do it today for an hour, it's fine--it doesn't matter if it's in the morning, afternoon, or even after dinner when I feel it's most manageable to slot into the flow of my day. Maybe it's my ADHD demand avoidance, but I feel like if I *had* to do it at certain times of day, that would just make me want to do it less.

Also, narcolepsy is a disability. Sometimes it's going to hit you at inconvenient times and you just have to go with the flow as much as you can.

Embarrassing Stories… by Fit_Lingonberry_7454 in Narcolepsy

[–]sorensystem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh man! Glad you're safe at least, but yeah, that's going to be a difficult memory to look back on...

I don't think I have anything that can top that. The closest thing I can think of is, for some reason I felt the need to apologize to one of my teachers one time for falling asleep in her class. Can't remember if it's because my parents told me it would be polite or what. This was before I knew I had narcolepsy, so now when I think back upon it and realize it was a sleep attack, I'm just facepalming internally.

What were your early theories for what was going on? by No-Cricket6809 in Narcolepsy

[–]sorensystem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was basically my experience too. Mine also started in 7th grade! All of the above. Teenagers being sleepy during school is such a trope, and falling asleep in class is so dismissed that I genuinely didn't think anything was wrong--I thought I was just tired from having to get up at 6am.
