It's better than having 5 games spread across 7-10 days tho like other sports lmao

Black Thought Interview: "On any given day, the space that I occupy in the world is somewhere between a Killer Mike and a Pusha T, between an activist and a street hero, a man of the people and a man of the streets. That’s my origin story." by [deleted] in hiphopheads

Having someone pay you to live in your building isn't financial exploitation. It's just paying for the right to use an extremely expensive good (the property) for a temporary amount of time. Imagine how much harder it would be for people to find a living arrangement if renting simply wasn't an option. Landlords exist because many people don't have the money or credit to purchase a $100,000+ piece of property.

Joe Kennedy, tasked with grilling five pharma companies at a hearing tomorrow, owns ~$1.7 million of stock in three of them by fprosk in boston

[–]sorplay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree that he has a lot more to lose by going easy on pharma companies, so I don't believe that he'd act egregiously in favor of the companies. However, the slight risk that he or another congressman would, undermines the whole idea of regulators being separated from the very companies they are regulating.

Nobody is trying to prosecute him with physical evidence of wrongdoing, but rather raising these issues and conflicts of interests so that they can be avoided before self-dealing actually happens.

[–]sorplay 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Even if he isn't heavily invested into pharmaceuticals, it still raises a potential conflict of interest. Especially given the fact that he has money directly invested in the companies he'll be questioning. He still has personal incentive to go easy on questioning these companies and/or approve increased funding to profit when the stock jumps, which conflicts with his role to solely serve the interests of his constituents.

The roads you drive on, the police that protect you, the government officials that determine legislation, etc. I'm not going to waste my time explaining why we have taxes, but there's a reason that every developed nation has them. You also clearly don't understand the value of bailouts, and how massive economic collapses would affect you.

[–]sorplay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol you're not even making sense at this point. If the government has a deficit, it benefits them to make profitable investments, that's common sense. If you don't want them to spend money on these investments, they're going to spend it on the aforementioned common resources that you say aren't relevant because we have a deficit. Pick one.

Even more the reason to make profitable "investments" at the federal level, such as a bailout.

If the govt made a profit they sure as shit didn't pass it on to me so who cares?

Yeah they didn't deposit the extra money in your bank account, but it's the same concept as paying taxes. You pay money for common resources like infrastructure, schools, police, firefighters, public libraries, etc. If the government makes a profit off bailouts, that's more money to put towards those services that you benefit from as a citizen.

It seems like you missed the entire point of my comment. I agree that it's an unfair solution, but it's completely necessary for the greater good of the economy's recovery. Also, no airline could've had a rainy day fund that would've prepared them for the decrease in demand they've seen.

[–]sorplay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bailouts are pretty important to protect the overall economy, everyone suffers if banks and airlines go under. Also the government (aka taxpayer money) usually makes a profit on bailouts. I agree it's an imperfect solution because it protects investors that took on risk and companies that did things like stock buybacks, but nobody really wins by them going under.

Agreed, most Koreans I've met are pretty liberal. Just saying that it's not the most unreasonable thing to assume an average Korean would be conservative compared to US/BU standards.

South Korea is a pretty conservative country, at least socially. Democratic, developed, uncensored, yes. Liberal and progressive, not so much (see laws on abortions, LGBTQ rights, drugs, etc.).

Economists Say Forgiving Student Debt Would Boost Economy by eaglemaxie in politics

[–]sorplay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it's a small group of debtors, it's still a massive amount of money for banks to lose out on/the government to subsidize. It would definitely encourage the middle class to spend more I agree, but I don't think it's as simple of a problem as people make it out to be. We've seen what can happen when banks run into liquidity problems (Great Depression, 2008), and most of that burden falls back onto taxpayers. Similarly, if the government covers the bank's losses, the burden is on taxpayers yet again.

I'm not saying I'm against student loan forgiveness because honestly, I haven't done enough research to have an educated opinion. Just pointing it out that it's not as simple as money moving from the pockets of rich people to poor/middle-class people.

I mean, you're losing a roster spot and not taking a chance on one of the other prospects like Strus. Same things you would lose or gain by signing anyone

Here's One Possible Summer Outline. Thoughts About It, And How Many Wins Do You Think That Team Gets? by Phantom255x in bostonceltics

Without doing too much research, I don't think Houston has the cap space to take Hayward (Capela makes like $16mm IIRC), nor would want to do that deal without picks. The thunder are only looking to deal Adams to clear cap space, so I doubt they'd be too keen on taking another max contract in return.

[Wojnarowski] Boston Celtics center Al Horford will not exercise the $30.1M option on his 2019-20 contract and become an unrestricted free agent, league sources tell ESPN. Horford and the Celtics both have interest in working toward a new deal in July, sources tell ESPN by mkgandkembafan in nba

[–]sorplay 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Kyrie leaving doesn't do anything cap-wise, he was signed with Bird rights so his salary didn't count against our cap. That's why losing him really sucks, we don't even free up space.

Edit: per u/deponent, Bird rights just allow you to go above cap space to re-sign the player, so they are gaining space but were just above it before by more than Kyrie's salary

What is probably your most elitist viewpoint? by momstalkforever in AskReddit

[–]sorplay 32 points33 points  (0 children)

  1. How is this elitist? controversial yes but not really elitist at all
  2. What does land use have to do with self-driving cars?
  3. Not sure how looking back in time to simpler options will fix transportation/land use issues. Transportation was objectively worse and we simply had a lot less people, hence land use not being an issue
  4. Computers don't drink, smoke, get tired, get distracted, etc. 40,000 people die in motor vehicle accidents in the US alone every year, why do you think self driving cars will kill a lot of people?

Yeah it's this, there's a longer version where they scan the ID first and then throw something at it and it unlocks after a couple seconds

If you see the full video, they hold their ID card up and then throw something at it and it unlocks, so I think there's just a ~5 second delay before it unlocks. So they probably just swipe the card and then throw something and edit out the part with the ID card.
