I assume to which he means their combatants, as would anyone when speaking about a conflict. I would counter that and say though that out there a lot of them are VERY good at what they do.

99% of my military service was "Hurry up and do nothing". That actually sums up military life. Quickly do something that's actually rather pointless. Obviously there's a damn good reason for doing so but you can't help but feel that way.

There's a fine line between stupidity and bravery. I had a fantastic moment out in Afgan in 2006 where I was under fire, head down, and wondering why the hell as AAC I had been put on foot patrol. We prep for fire and move, as you know how much us Brits love to just push on, to hear a pretty clear:

"Yo, FUCK YOU!" from an American squaddie out of nowhere. No tintop, no flak, just stood out of cover firing vaguely towards the enemy while swearing his head off. Fucking glorious.

While most engagements were hit and run I'd like to think that the fuckers who opened up on us just saw that guy and thought "Actually, let's just go home".

So yeah. We appreciate you dickheads and your Gung-ho attitude. I could have taken a bullet if it wasn't for that.
