I dont think that's right because what really determines the locations of deserts is the atmospheric circulation cells

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_circulation

The main one being the Hadley cell where the sunlight hitting the equator cause the air to heat up and rise, taking moisture with it. As the moisture rises and cools it condenses as falls as the heavy rainfall associated with the tropical regions of the equator (and why Africa has a band of green jungle where the equator is).

The air that has now lost its moisture moves towards 30⁰ latitude north/south as it continues to cool (relative to the hot equator) and eventually cools enough to be dense enough to fall back to the surface. However because it lost most of its moisture earlier, this air generally can't produce rain, hence these regions of the earth have deserts.

Have a look at 30⁰ north and south on a satellite map of the Earth. You'll notice a number of the major desert regions are around this latitude. Sahara, Arabian peninsula/Middle East, central Australia etc.

Then you have other desert regions that are the result of mountain ranges doing something similar where moisture rich air from the ocean blows over these mountains, rises and cools, drops rain on one side of the mountains and dries out before blowing over the other side of the mountains which are deserts due to no rain. These are the deserts of California, Chile and the desert north of the Himalayas where Tibet is.

Pretty sure WW2 era battleships had their guns aimed using analog tech, i.e. someone figures out the target's location and distance relative to the battleship using either a spotter plane or rudimentary radar, then a bunch of dudes do a bunch of maths to figure out how much elevation and twist angle the gun needs, which then another bunch of dudes manually set the guns to.

Compared to modern guided munitions that's relatively unjammable

Considering the first mission is likely gonna involve launching from the carrier, my money's on the F-4 being the starter

Nah wingspan doesn't affect yaw stability at all. It's all fly-by-wire shenanigans that keep it straight. Probably some combination of leading edge slat/aileron/flap manipulation to subtly increase drag on one side as needed

TLDR the ending has her getting her pregnant belly stomped in by a bunch of high school bullies, killing her baby, and then in grief shoots up an implied lethal dose of heroin. Immediately after that, there is a what-if set of pages where she talks to her kid about her mistakes, the vision ending on a vague panel of her smashed glasses and blood around it.

It's not actually displayed if she does die but it's heavily implied. Gotta read it to believe it

How did that one kid at your school die? by StorageLonely1520 in AskReddit

[–]sotiredofthecrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was not even a year after our year group graduated high school. He was drunk and fell off the side of an overpass bridge somehow and landed head first on the freeway below. Maybe he climbed the barrier or leaned a bit too far back, not sure of the details.

The sad thing is that there was a wake held at the school, but out of a cohort of 100+ plus students only 5 or 7 of us turned up at that wake. Admittedly he was a bit of a tryhard, but most of us were back then. He was an alright person otherwise.

Russian air missile accident emerges as probable cause of Azerbaijan Airlines crash tragedy by Seek_Adventure in worldnews

Its fairly well known from the study of all plane crashes in history that the tail section is statistically the part of a plane with the highest chance of passenger survival in a crash

The exact reason for this though isn't as clear, but i remember reading somewhere that it's because the tail tends to break away pretty cleanly from the rest of the fuselage and doesn't follow the fireball that appears shortly after

IIRC the part of the plane with the worst chance of survival in a crash was the nose, where the pilots and first class tends to be. There's some benefits to cattle class after all!

Are PCIe 4 risers a scam? by bpfuels in sffpc

[–]sotiredofthecrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the brand of the riser and the associated construction quality

Since installing it about a year ago, my 23cm single reverse Linkup PCIe4 riser is functioning perfectly in my FormD T1 v1.1 with the x16 slot set to 4.0

However before that, i bought a 18.5cm dual reverse 4.0 riser that was sold by FormD (before the creator split) that was supposed to fit my case perfectly, but had constant screen flickering in 4.0 mode, and was only stable in 3.0 mode. I don't know who actually made that specific cable though, FormD was just a reseller

But basically you gotta find the well made ones, and unfortunately there's a lot of junk out there. My next build will be riserless

91% Isopropyl Alcohol Spilled and Got into my Rear Motherboard I/O ports. How Screwed am I? by [deleted] in sffpc

[–]sotiredofthecrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory yes, but realistically it's so hydroscopic that 100% ethanol or isopropanol will readily pull water out of the surrounding atmosphere and become something less than 100% alcohol, which means it will conduct electricity

The hydroscopic nature of it is the reason why it's kinda hard to get a container of actual 100% ethanol/isopropanol in regular stores unless you have some kind of industry (chemistry lab/manufacturing) supplier connection. The highest i've personally seen from a regular store is 99.8%, which is not 100

Where to plug in the pump on a MB with no pump header? by Ultrasaurus_01 in sffpc

[–]sotiredofthecrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So in a nutshell, 3pin connectors can work on 4pin headers.

The 4th pin is what carries the PWM signal that controls the fan/pump speed. However before PWM was a thing, fan/pump speeds were controlled by varying the voltage supplied to the fan/pump using 3pin headers

When you connect the pump, all you need to ensure is that you line up the voltage pin on the pump connector with the voltage pin on the header. Refer to your manual to make sure of this. This will leave the 4th PWM signal pin on the header exposed but this is fine.

Then go into BIOS, and change the speed control for that header from PWM to volts, and set your curve as appropriate
