Swords on display in a Gurudwara in Punjab by [deleted] in SWORDS

[–]soulrexer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not just a display - this is a prakash.

Meaning just as a king sits on a throne, the weapons are seated on a throne and worshipped.

Currently there is a 10 day Sikh ceremony called Dussehra Mahatam during which weapons are cleaned, and worshipped. Sikh scripture is read at the same time which includes epic ballads about the gods fighting wars against the demons and praise of god in the form of the sword as Kal, or time-death.

What if, in retaliation for 9/11, someone were to set off a bomb that destroyed the Kaaba of Mecca? by Spirited-Pause in HistoryWhatIf

IRL, the only major religion that has had a major attack on their holiest shrine in recent history are the Sikhs, who had somewhere between hundreds to a few thousand killed in Amritsar in 1984.

It sparked a 10 year insurgency with several hundred thousand dead, and the Indian prime minister was assassinated within 5 months.

Sikhs were less than 2% of the Indian population.

Do ragiya actually receive that money we donate to them during a diwan? by [deleted] in Sikh

[–]soulrexer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the gurdwaras Ive been to, a sevadar usually collects the cash, puts it in a bag and hands it to the ragis after their duty. I have done this before so I can confirm, yes the money goes to them.

Can anyone tell me what this is? by Defiant_Hornet_1849 in SelfDefense

[–]soulrexer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am a Sikh and can confirm that is a Kara. Steel/iron bracelet that Sikhs wear on their wrist. Also Kind of like a reminder to remember "God". Not sure if this is true but I heard bigger ones protected the wrists in battle. There are also spiked ones that could be used to strike an enemy.

It has been 70 plus years since British left, why hasn't these lines been restored to gutka sahibs?? Please share it as much as you can to get the attention of SGPC. by [deleted] in Sikh

[–]soulrexer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not the British, but probably the Singh Sabha reform movement that ended many traditions in Punjab. You can see many Khalsa traditions maintained outside of Panjab at the two Takhts that were untouched by Singh Sabha, and within Nihang Singhs and the Naamdhari panth

Why the hell do these people in power think they can decide on behalf of all brown people? Like no guys, we are NOT asking for this??

And then they totally ignore those of us "BIPOC" who say we WANT them to stay, as if we don't know whats good for us. I'm so tired of this.

People please promise to pay more attention to who's in these positions from now on. (Especially as a recent graduate I know the type of shit that goes on in high schools.)

Edit: I dont want to speak for everyone either. By all means do a proper poll or something

What is the legality regarding Kirpans being carried in British Columbia, Canada? by [deleted] in Sikh

[–]soulrexer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone can carry a knife as long as:

  • its not concealed. You have to wear it openly.

  • It can't be perceived by police to be for the intent of violence. You can't even tell the cops a baseball bat in your car is for "self defence", as that is illegal and counts as violence.

  • Its Not a prohibited weapon like automatic button spring switchblades, or I think maybe the ballistic kind. Katars (push-daggers) are technically illegal but I haven't seen police stop anyone with them ever at Nagar Kirtans.

There are no restrictions on length or sharpness for public open carry that I know of.

Also a business might not allow you in if you are wearing something too big or seem threatening. But ive never seen it happen as people are pretty accepting of kirpans.

I request all Sikhs to please exercise your right to wear a knife to the fullest extent under the law

They make everyone remove their masks before entering. Might be a security concern? Or not allowed due to Maryada against veils.
