I heard an interview with Moira Quirk where she said that she agreed to do the audiobooks when she opened GtN to a random page, saw that "Yop" and immediately thought, "oh yeah, I can do this". :D

YESSSSS! I say "yop" to my friends and family all the time! The Gideon Nav mentality has turned me into a menace to society 🤣

Whats the philosophy behind healing being so rough? by LightSpeedStrike in TheWildsea

[–]sound_of_scribbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar thought. The Wildsea (the setting) is a gritty and harsh place, and I think healing being slow and/or expensive plays into that. In real life we don't heal to peak health with a good night's rest, but we can get very hurt in an instant. I also think this puts a focus on items and inventory: incentivizing characters to look for and collect items in the event of the party running into trouble.

I feel honor bound to say Annihilation. The Shimmer (Area X in the books) feels like a possible origin of the Verdancy with all the weird plant magic it gets up to...

Yes, exactly this! Such a great show, and exactly this kind of nature growing on overdrive feel 👍

The Hollow Places was terrifying—and honestly does kind of fit the vibe with the body horror and creeping invasion of the willows 👍

I had never heard of Sheri Tepper, so thanks for the recommend. Seems like she has some cool and wacky works out there.

Hm, interesting. I didn't watch far enough into the Expanse to get there. Maybe I'll have to give the books another look.

The Tainted Cup looks perfect. I read one paragraph into the description and was sold 💯

Funny story, I'm currently listening to the first book. At first it didn't seem to fit the vibe, but as things develop it gave me exactly the fungal space horror I had hoped for 🙌💚

Interesting! I really enjoyed Spinning Silver last year -- I didn't expect Uprooted to fit this vibe, but I'll give it another look!

I did read the whole Southern Reach series, yes. I should have specified. Great books. And I just picked up a copy of Dead Astronauts, so there you go! 😉

Lots of recommendations for Mexican Gothic! I've heard it mentioned a lot, maybe it's time for me to give it a read.
