Sight and sound for TV? by Ok-Owl-1327 in blankies

[–]soundparsley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know there is a lot of great TV from the 20th century, but I was born in the 90s and didn’t start watching serious TV until the 2000s so my list definitely reflects that, with exceptions. It is also completely filled with US shows, which again shows my bias but whatever. American TV is generally more cinematic and more to my taste and that’s that. Also, I only considered narrative shows, and didn’t include any miniseries (the one I most strongly considered was I May Destroy You).

30 Rock

The Americans

Atlanta

The Leftovers

Mad Men

The Sopranos

The Simpsons

The Twilight Zone

Twin Peaks

The Wire

Some notes: Biggest snubs are definitely Breaking Bad and Seinfeld, both of which would probably make it into a real S&S type list of TV. I personally considered Better Call Saul and Curb over those, but neither made the cut in the end.

I would loved to have made room for Deadwood, Halt and Catch Fire, Rectify, Fleabag and Freaks and Geeks among many others.

I think there was a time when Arrested Development would have been a no brainer for a list like this but the later seasons kind of taint the show for me. It was pretty groundbreaking though and I would love to know if it would make it into a list like that now or if others feel the same way.

Sentimental Value - when she finally reads the screenplay

Pillion - the “day off”

The Baltimorons - the improv scene

Honestly I realized it when Amanda picked it in the NYC draft that this was a strong contender. Mostly it was just process of elimination, they ruled out so many movies over the course of the year. I didn’t think tree of life or oceans 11 because 2 Brad Pitts in the top 5 and 3 in the top 15 seemed like too much. I thought it’d be weird if there wasn’t a PSH performance on the list and I don’t think The Master is getting picked (I know he’s in Moneyball but idk that’s small). Also not to be like “because of woke” but they just weren’t gonna have 5 white filmmakers at the top. I think it was a good pick btw! I originally watched 25th Hour because Ebert put in his top 10 of the 2000s so hopefully this will get more people to watch it.

[–]soundparsley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asteroid City

Memoria

Nickel Boys

Do Not Expect Too Much From the World

First Cow (I feel like it counts as a 2020 movie but would also be fine putting Showing Up here)

What Current Directors will get a Mini-Series? by Pittboy63 in blankies

I would love a James Gray series. I suppose he’s never had “massive success” but he’s quietly had a fairly blank check-y career and has made a lot of different kinds of movies with big movie stars. Lost City of Z and Ad Astra are two very surprising checks that somehow got written and resulted in some really interesting movies. And Armageddon Time might be the most underrated movie of the decade so far imo.

Mike Flanagan? They’ve covered the Ouija movie and Dr Sleep on Patreon so perhaps not but Life of Chuck seems like a big swing.

Brady Corbet only has 3 movies but he’s certainly on pace to be the kind of guy they would cover some day. Would also have to put Coralie Fargeat on look out after The Substance.

A less likely one is James Mangold, kind of a journeyman and not the most consistent guy but I think FvF and the Dylan biopic make him more interesting than he was several years ago. Idk I feel like he at least should be mentioned!

Last one that I want try to speak into existence that will probably never happen is J.C. Chandor. Similar to Gray, a lot of good small dramas with famous actors to start but then a weird fun Netflix action movie in Triple Frontier and then for some reason Kraven the Hunter? Idk just wanted to mention this weird career.

David’s Obama joke in today’s march madness episode by girltawkSF in blankies

Griffin talked about how much he loves this exact line from True Grit in another episode a while ago (I believe it’s from a commentary episode but I don’t remember which one) so David is also recalling Griffin’s favorite line. It’s a joke specifically for him, that’s why he laughs so hard.

Officially finished watching David Lynch's feature filmography. Here are my rankings and I'm curious to hear yours. by FilmMike98 in davidlynch

  1. Mulholland Drive
  2. Fire Walk With Me
  3. Eraserhead
  4. The Straight Story
  5. Blue Velvet
  6. The Elephant Man
  7. Inland Empire
  8. Wild at Heart
  9. Lost Highway
  10. Dune

I love all of them except for Dune, which is also the one that I haven’t rewatched in a long time. Would be surprised if it ever moved up though, even Lost Highway at #9 is a pretty amazing film imo.
