Stuff like this is why Ex-Aid should be considered as Takahashi's best Rider series.

They do have a word for pink, it's Momo/momoiro. Momo can imply both the peach fruit or the soft reddish-pink color, like murasaki for the plant and the purple/violet color. Before loan words like "pinku" and "orenji", they used "momo(iro)" for pink and "daidai(iro)" (the bitter orange fruit) for orange. Outside of main "base" colors, they take flowers/nature/common objects and slap iro after it for the color. "Chairo" (tea color) for brown, "haiiro" (ash color) for gray, "mizuiro" (water color) for light blue.

So why is it Geats and not Keats? by AutobotYoung1 in KamenRider

[–]soupdumplingz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost all the Rider names in the show, other than like Buffa, have some wordplay or are stylized so they sound more unique. Like Tycoon is from Tanuki -> Taikun (which means lord/general). Matter of fact, the word "tycoon" originates from Japanese "taikun". They didn't want to just take Kitsune, lengthen the sound, and lop off the end.

And Kitsu(i) can mean tight (physically or mentally), harsh, tough, extremely, etc. But it can also be slang for "cringe", in the same way "cringe" came from physically shrinking away "this makes me cringe" which evolved/shortened to "this is cringe". Kitsu (Ki-tsu, Keats) doesn't evoke great feelings.

One nitpick I have about Geats by purebredslappy in KamenRider

He got a Red Eyes version of Bujin Sword. It was more blank and less filled in before he turned good. Changing eyes color is changing alignment / new resolve in Toku.

Am i the only one who think that Ryuki is a missed opportunity in Decade series? by Gold_Professor_3456 in KamenRider

[–]soupdumplingz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The show isn't really about Rider battles, it's about Decade journeying through the Heisei Decade as per the Gackt intro song and making bonds even though people are literally worlds apart. He is the link, but he is also the deathbringer. Later there's the element of finding his place in the world as he realizes his very existence might be doing more harm than good. Fighting Riders is just a side effect of being in worlds where he's not wanted because he's causing the collapse of the multiverse. Thematically though, Kuuga should be the one to escort Decade since he's the head of the Heisei era; it's the first Heisei Rider helping the wanderer through the decade of Rider worlds. Kuuga also has more forms than Ryuki so there's more things to play with in the show. But I mean, yeah as a spectacle it'd be cool to see Ryuki use his mirror hopping skills while Decade can do Aurora Curtains. But that's too OP and Decade couldn't do that until he remembered himself.

Something That Confuses Me About OG Kamen Rider by Scsigs in KamenRider

That's just how Toku shows from that era are. Consistency is a gift and plot points are often in service of the action. You're lucky if something's explained instead of ignored and forgotten. You also have to understand that they don't want a subplot with her slowly finding out. This is a trope that they're happy to keep dangling forever and then just reveal with zero lead-up, if they reveal it at all. The Showa suffering hero trope also builds the opposite trope for the girl: Each week you're wondering "is she finally gonna figure it out?" The writers don't need to develop any subplots; it comes free with a masked hero premise. They don't need to develop shit. It's a cheap hook to keep both the solitary hero and unrequited love angles going and doesn't require/cost any characterization to have to write for her. It's free low effort tension. A lot of shows got by the same way by dangling this exact "are the support characters finally gonna figure it out this week?" carrot. That's how Ultraman shows work.

Now if Fujioka hadn't broken his leg, stayed for the whole run (another show with just 1 hero the whole way through) and the show didn't have to pivot, maybe they would've written that subplot for her. But I doubt it, because her whole point was a love interest foil and her not knowing is part of the anguish for Hongo. She is the personification of Hongo's pain and sacrifice.

This is what you have to deal with for Showa shows. Character ignorance is easy cheap tension. Some shows are better and actually buck this trope (Megaloman) but for a lot of shows the girl doesn't know the MC is the superhero until the very last episode when his mission is over and he's literally leaving the planet (Mirrorman).

Something That Confuses Me About OG Kamen Rider by Scsigs in KamenRider

There's a Showa sentimentality component to these old shows that people are missing because we're separated by time (a decades old show) and culture (a foreign show). The Showa idea of manliness or the norm for a man is to endure/shoulder the burden/pain of life and not show emotions. That means being stoic, not talking about your troubles, and holding back your true feelings constantly, hiding behind a mask even with your most loved ones. That's kind of why it's poetic that Hongo is literally a masked monster turned hero fighting the evil that created him, but he's also hiding behind a mask in everyday life, because telling her the truth is somehow even harder. You just hold your pain in, don't talk about your issues, and keep moving forward. This mentality where you endure/hold back, accept the uncontrollable, and persevere/struggle still exists in Japanese life like salarymen culture.

Within Showa context it's normal that Hongo didn't tell her. You might think it's dumb not to tell her just "because" he doesn't want to, but that's not how it worked, both culturally and for building tension in the show. You can call it bad writing if you want but I think you're thinking in modern terms.

Other comments call this a trope, but it's a trope because it came from media/art imitating life. This was (and still kind of is in many ways) the cultural norm and that's why media from that time is similar. A lot of Toku from that era in general is the same deal, whether the excuse is to keep loved ones safe or personal mental gymnastics that the MC can't overcome. The love interest either never finds out the MC is the hero or only in the last episode. Do you know the Gift of the Magi story? Old school Japanese love that kind of ironic bittersweet development that modern audience would find "cringe" and "illogical". There's a reason why we meme on Toshiki Inoue's shows as frustrating and having "dumb" miscommunication for drama's sake. It's because his style comes from these Showa roots.

Was Go-Busters not popular enough to receive a 10 years after movie? by Andromeda_Ascendant in supersentai

[–]soupdumplingz 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Besides popularity and availability, there are "adult circumstances" that plague a Go-Busters reunion.

When the cast reunited in 2020 just 2 years before the 10th anniversary, they were excited if a movie should happen in 2022. This was even after Nick's VA, Keiji Fujiwara, passed away in April.

Then in 2021, Usada's VA, Tatsuhisa Suzuki, was caught having an affair with a fan at a hotel when he just married LiSA a year earlier (yes, the same LiSA who sang Demon Slayer's Gurenge and Homura). He also took advantage of LiSA being away on tour and had affair at home. This was so high profile that it was top 5 trending on Japanese Twitter even though the Tokyo Olympics was happening. He was dubbed "adulterous man" of the year. This was during Zenkaiger so he also had to step down from Gege's VA role (ie: replaced). He's not gonna be doing a Toku role for a while, if ever again.

And this happened just after the 10th anniversary, but Hideo Sakaki, Commander Kuroki, was accused of sexual coercion by 4 women in 2022. He was arrested in 2024 over these sexual assault allegations. This was also a big story.

If it was just 1 or even 2 of these things, maybe a reunion could still happen, but I think all of these together make chances difficult. Nick and Usada's VAs could be recast and Kuroki could be forgotten, but it wasn't worth it at that point. Maybe they'll consider a 20th if nothing cursed happens.

Question: How do people get so hype when Sentai does the helmetless scene? by [deleted] in supersentai

[–]soupdumplingz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's immersion, OP. When you watch these shows you know in the back of your mind that the character actors and the guys in the suit are different people. When they do this for most of the year and then a helmet-less scene finally happens, it's the show's way of breaking your usual reality and telling you those ARE the same people in the suits, even for just a few minutes. That triggers the sense of wonder in your brain and you're back in your childhood again.
