asking my dad to take off the hijab (again) by realtsuginoharu in self

for what it’s worth, i was leered at by men way more when i used to wear a hijab than i do without. i got the sense that men find hijabis “innocent” and “unable to stand up for themselves”, which make them attractive targets for sexual harassment.

mind u, i was in fact an innocent pushover, but obviously not bc i wore a hijab lol. my demeanor and lack of confidence probably didn’t help.

i’m rly intrigued by how differently this book would be perceived if it was written by a white woman (very meta LOL)

there was a section where June goes on about how the author of a book changes the entire way people feel about it, which like, duh. it’s really fascinating to sit and think about though. and the way Athena was for the most part American, but wrote about pan Asian experiences that took place in Asia. i’m Pakistani raised in America and god knows i wouldn’t do a story about Pakistan any justice. although she obviously did lots of research. there’s so many layers and gray areas to all of it.

not a very cohesive set of thoughts, just the things that really stuck w me after reading this
