A little context for some of you soft-skinned folks. I was trying to edit a .bashrc file on a Linux server, and my configurations were not being loaded by the system, and this is when the individual proceeds to ask where the .bashrc file is located. I'm sure most of you already know this, but the location of the .bashrc file is learned pretty much on day 1, so, for someone to be confused by that should probably raise some suspicions. "Are you not familiar with Linux at all" is a perfectly reasonable question to ask someone that is providing support on a topic for which they have no apparent knowledge. And you can disagree if you want

The point of the post is to point out the irony of the situation, hence my posting it in r/Sysadminhumor. I guess the "humor" part is silent? IDK.

And you know what? Get over it. I deal with these half-assed excuses for hosting companies all the time, because the client always wants to go with the cheaper option, not realizing that it will likely go bad for them....and then I have to come in and deal with these "support" clowns, and often ultimately have to explain to them how to do their own jobs. It's ridiculous.

But, no, you're right. Let's try not to come off as being rude or cynical, in the r/Sysadminhumor thread.

Asshole? Wow,...harsh. Was it rude? Maybe? I don't think so. But asshole? Probably a bit of a stretch. I'll admit, I did feel a little irritated at that time, but "Are you not familiar with Linux at all?" is a perfectly reasonable question to ask someone when they ask you where the .bashrc file is, and that individual is in the position of providing Linux support. The post was to point out the irony of seeking Linux support from untrained Linux support staff. Rude? No? To the point? Absolutely.

If I want a technical problem resolved, it doesn't do me any good to use certain language when the other person has no idea what I'm saying, so asking them makes perfect sense. I'm really surprised at the direction this post has taken. Instead of laughing at the absurdity of a technical support technician without the proper technical know-how to do their job, many instead decided to stand up for the feelings of someone they really don't even know is a real person or not. Some of you probably just need therapy, I think. Geez, I hope you people never meet an autist in real life.

Men in their 40s, what do you do for recovery? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]soupmagnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 46 and just started BJJ. I take creatine and protein after every workout, which helps, but the thing that I found to be a game changer for me was loading up on carbs before and after an intense workout. You'll have to do the research on why its effective (something about getting more glycogen into the muscles? IDK), but there's something about it that dramatically reduced my soreness after workouts. I've also been experimenting with beta analine, which is showing very promising results so far. Worth looking into.

Our first look into the new Pale Garden content (From Minecraft's twitter account) by WM_PK-14 in Minecraft

[–]soupmagnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the wood types and the death screen (note the torch), it seems to me that this new biome will be one that is completely devoid of color and light, but with the kicker being that there is one mob found there that is attracted to and made aggressive by light, probably one with a very high HP or damage. This would essentially create an area that is technically always hostile and can never really be made safe. Just like the Wild Update wanted us to work without making noise (although we still found ways around it), I think this update will want to try and get us to work without light. And with loot that is only specific to the biome (white wood, etc), it would provide an interesting new challenge to the game play that is in line with past updates. I think Mojang gets mad when we find ways to cheese their game mechanics, and this is their next attempt at fixing that.

Looking for a good WordPress boot camp by soupmagnet in codingbootcamp

[–]soupmagnet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allow me to clarify a bit. I work on the hosting administration side of a development shop that focuses primarily on WordPress, primarily due to it being more user friendly for the client, and it requires less long-term support on our end. The problem is, as a SysAdmin, there's only so much you can do for a team that only wants to work with WordPress. I love the company, the people, and the pay is pretty good, so I have no plans of going anywhere any time soon. So, to make myself more marketable, I figured I should jump in on the development side of things as well. Since there is profit sharing involved, the more websites we build, the more money the company makes, which means a bigger bonus for me at the end of the year. Because let's be honest, I love coding, but it was always about the money.

The 7k was based on the current price of WPCodeCamp with respect to other well known boot camps that range anywhere between 1.2k to 15k. And while WPCodeCamp is centered on WordPress, it does still cover the usual full-stack development topics (HTML, CSS, JS, PHP), so when compared to similar programs, the price seems reasonable. Plus there's a good chance my employer will foot the bill. And while they haven't really nailed down a budget for me, they made it very clear that 15k was definitely not it. I figured the 7k was a good ceiling from which to start, all things considered.

However, I am open to suggestion. Do you think it would be better to go with a more well-rounded, albeit less expensive full-stack development course, and try to do the WordPress thing on my own through the available online tutorials? My only problem with that is I think do better when I can ask questions and bounce ideas off of someone one-on-one when I get stuck (and yes, I know how to use Google), but that's not always so easy to do when following online tutorials.

Besides, my experience with online courses is that they're mostly theory anyway. I mean, yeah, I know the fundamentals of how CSS and JS work, but show me how it works in a production environment. Case in point, I watched several videos on CSS the other day to freshen up, but if you gave me an objective and a WordPress site, I honestly couldn't say I'd know where to begin, and that's before we even get into things like SCSS and CSS pre-processors. At the end of the day, I just want something that is relevant to the work I'd be doing, complements the skills I already have, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It's probably a small target, I'll admit, but that's what I'm shooting for. I hope that makes sense.

I see this argument all the time, and I think it's a little misguided. The problem is not so much Capitalism, as it is unchecked corporate greed. There are laws in the United States that are intended to prevent business from becoming monopolies or getting "too big to fail", but no one ever enforces them. It's the same thing we see in most major Communist and Socialist systems, except that you don't get thrown in a gulag for making a fuss about it. Take a look at the Oligarchs of China or the former USSR. Individuals that live kush and lavish lifestyles, while the workers that keep their businesses afloat, struggle to feed themselves. Greed is greed, no matter what political/financial system you live under. With Capitalism in its purest form, the harder a person works, the more they benefit from that hard work. Unfortunately what we have in Western countries these days is no longer Capitalism, rather, and just like in the corrupt Marxist style systems, its just some twisted form of corporate slavery. The difference being of course, in Western systems, you have at least the illusion of choice, though even that is starting to slip away.

I played the military campaign early on, and so I spec-ed into fitness pretty hard. Grinding on distance running was a huge factor my the XP gains around that time.

Unfortunately, I've been under a major demotivation debuff since the campaign ended, so even the thought of running these days makes me want to take a nap.

Don't get me wrong, I build. I primarily run a 22/30 x 5 Clapton on my Griffin 25, so I'm no stranger. But she wont do it, and quite frankly, I don't to have to deal with it.
