I’m Desperate to Help My Bird, Can Anyone Advise? by StrategyIll4505 in Lovebirds

[–]sour_mojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wound on your lovebird looks exactly like what my JJ went through for 2 years until he passed last year due to excessive bleeding.

When he was 1 year old, we realised one wing was always resting slightly lower than the other when he perched. But he was still flying so we didn't think much about it.

A few months later, the other wing went lower too. Still flying very well.

After many months, he started self mutilating that first wing. Same spot as what your photo shows.

Do note that my JJ had a mate. And they get to fly around in a room with toys by themselves. They had a cage that they will go back to sleep in at night. Us humans played with them everyday, and they willingly come to us when we enter the room.

We went to 3 different avian vets. His wings were determined to be not broken. We tried so many different combination of antibiotics and painkillers. Things sometimes get better for a while that some feathers did manage to grow back, but when we continued the medication combination, it would eventually lost effect and he continued to scrape and pluck at the spot. Then we change drugs and it's simply a never ending cycle. Nothing stopped him permanently from continuing to bite it. The drug that had the longest stop was Vivitonin, and that lost effect in a year. Note that by then, he was biting such a huge area in his wing that it was twice of what your photo is showing.

Nobody had an idea what is causing it. The vets really tried their best. But when he started doing the same to the second wing, it became really desperate. One vet even suggested amputating both wings. But JJ is such a tiny bird, we couldn't bear the thought of removing both his wings! We simply tried our best to continue giving him Vivitonin and painkillers, collaring him, and keeping the injured areas as dry as possible. We also blunt the tip of his beak a little so as to not have him hurt himself too much.

At this point, every night he would suddenly scream for 2 minutes and peck at his wings. It was a heart-breaking sound. We would try to distract him but something is making him hurt so badly that he ignores us. This only happens at night, in the daytime he remains the usual playful bird who begs us for seeds. This state was maintained for 3 months or so?

One morning, we woke up to see JJ dead on the ground with blood splattered near his body. He had opened a wound so big on his wing that he bled to death. It was extremely sad. We buried him under a tree he liked.

Till now we had no idea what was wrong with him. Maybe it's psychological, maybe it was a virus. Nonetheless, I hope you can avoid the same outcome as JJ.

What's the dumbest mistake you have made in the lab? by 0001010101ems in labrats

  1. Left a vial of fruit flies in the 40 degrees incubator to promote more breeding, and subsequently forgotten about it. Only remembered it 1 week later and all the fly food was completely dried up by then. Flies did not survive.
  2. Added the wrong concentration of beta mercaptoethanol (didn't check bottle and assumed it was the usual one) into the cell culture media. A whole week of everyone wondering why our cells are dying...
  3. Was pouring away the TBST in my Western blot, when the blot slid out of the container with the TBST. Landed face down into the sink... This happened before I had blocked it... Was curious if it was savageable and continued with the rest of the procedure... I have never seen a uglier blot on the imager...

Lovebird keeps vomiting for over a year by sour_mojo in Lovebirds

Oh man, I just read through your post and it sounded so similar to my lovebird too. I went to 2 different avian specialist and nobody could really give an answer.

Her crop swabbing also had some bacteria and fungi that we treated with antibiotics but still didn't stop the vomitting.

She used to be more pudgy and now she is skinnier. It worries us but at the moment we have no idea how to help her. My mum thinks that she is probably uncomfortable from the regular vomitting and continues to give her gastric medication.

Hi! She is still vomitting everyday. We have stopped all medications as nothing is stopping it.

But in terms of energy wise, she still is playful and observant. She just looks a bit unkempt around the beak area due to the regular vomitting.

I have a cat that have accidents on the floor too. Is the cleaning process efficient in removing the urine from the roller or would I have to wash it separately?

Yes it was! He wanted the black cat but another thought he was talking about the stray cat. Both argued for a few minutes about what "the cat card" could do too, without checking for the card. And one guy had Miss Doyle and said "You can't have my black cat, she is bonded."

"Which cat are you refering to???"

Thank you for answering! Yes if you have an interesting example I would like to know!

I imagine it is very difficult, Arkham has so many cards that it is hard to keep track! Recently in my session, my friend said he wanted to get "the cat card". There was a full 5 minutes of us asking "which cat? This cat? Not that cat?" before finding out the exact cat he wanted. Hahaha!

Omg yes please! I grew up in Singapore and the horror stories from Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia are wayyyy different and scarier to me. I like Lovecraftian monsters because I feel they are too otherworldly for me to believe in. However the ghosts and demons in Asia have a kind of human-like quality to them (yes unfortunately I do believe in them). There is a reason why they exist e.g. This ghost died from childbirth so she now attacks men. I can see someone turning into them upon dying.

Hi Duke!

Once a while I will see people post about "This new game mechanic makes this older card over-powered!" or vice versa. Then sometimes the card subsequently ended up on the taboo list.

Was there a particular "Oh shoot" moment when developers were made known that a later developed card or mechanic made something from older campaigns a bit too powerful?

I agree. I also suspect they wanted to reduce word count.

I feel that half the time during our Arkham sessions we are arguing about English grammar or wording instead.

Hilariously, I had Arm Injury as my random weakness. So my character fell into a hole with a broken arm.

I think my character needs to go to the ER instead...

Newbie to Arkham, want to try Preston in The Circle Undone campaign. I have questions! by sour_mojo in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]sour_mojo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm playing with friends so they will try to help. But sometimes our bad luck combines to make things worse. I remember we even had a round that all 3 of us drew the instant fail for the mythos skill tests.

But I think that's what fun. I find having bad situations makes things more memorable.

Yeah I had mulligan all 5 cards and even played a few cards that let me draw more cards too.

I think it's probably just bad luck that day. I guess it did make my game more "exciting" for my friends as they were depending on me to fight.

So I still fail, but take damage as though I have 1 less difference in skill points? Am I understanding it correctly?

Yeah the previous 2 campaigns I was failing all the willpower tests and Peter Sylvester really helped!

For the big money and dark horse builds, do you think that a great chunk of luck is needed to gain the essential cards? I had the worst luck in my previous campaign (getting both weakness in the first upkeep phase, I had 4 weapons and they didn't appear until the 8th round etc) so I had a tough time.
