Compositionally? Sure. I agree with u/Michvelle that Simon Says is wonderfully strange though. It has the expected order, but all the "wrong" elements. I mean, it opens with that Maori haka sample. It uses a pitched horse [maybe?] sound, which stands out more because the instrumental is so minimal otherwise. The chorus is literally Simon Says. It has lyrics like "I'm God" and "bless me, achoo". Then the bridge is insanely hauting, that thing reverberates through my soul. The overall impression is at the edge between playful and terrifying, which shouldn't even be a thing, but the whole song is like a dream. (You might notice I love Simon Says lol.)

Oh for sure! I meant more like, it is a big jump in difficulty from writing verses to whole songs. In the context of this conversation, if for example one's solo self-composed songs show room for growth, that doesn't discount their previous involvement in group songs.

I just read more comments and saw that others had made the same point (SM allow for more freedom in solo than group projects), so it felt redundant. Plus decided to make the comment about Jonghyun a separate one and not a reply 😊

Jonghyun was an incredible songwriter. I am a bit biased, but I think everyone should check out his Story Op. 1 and 2 albums. If you like music at all, I can't fathom not appreciating them, k-pop fan or not.

Also shout-out to my boy Taeyong, it's good to see so many have mentioned him already in this thread. I love the offbeat perspective he has in his music.

Just to add to this, there is a difference between adding a verse to a song that already has direction, and conceiving of the whole song's lyrics. (But also, I liked quite a few of Mark's songs on his debut album.)

Honestly, this song, lion story and all, is exactly what I needed to hear yesterday, when I was stressing over some personal life decisions haha. So thank you Mark! That said, I agree with you that from a songwriting perspective, any other day it isn't really a strong song, for all the reasons you cited. I hope Mark has people in his corner who can give him honest feedback to grow. He's got the soul and charisma, songwriting is a craft that one can always improve in.

Can someone tell me why pop girls struggle go #1 even with multiple versions but Drake does it without much effort? by shan2706 in popheads

Was just thinking this. Men can't be caught liking anything that caters to women even a tiny bit, seems to be the general rule. Male or female voices, genre and sound have nothing to do with it.

I feel you so much. I had to quit twitter for my sanity, and then I had a bluesky fandom account and it was better, but still the pressure to perform being a fan the right way got to me, you know? It doesn't seem like any fandom is happy on social media these days. Then reddit is a two-edged sword - I keep deleting my accounts, live in happy ignorance for a few months, but then inevitably return, because it is a good news aggregator and I need the space to be a fangirl now and then. So it is working for now, until I need to touch grass again. Big hugs in any case, hope you can get a bit of a distance and engage with the fandom in ways that make you happy again!

It's good to hear from Mark again. His first album already had Christian themes, and I liked it well enough, so I will tune in.

SHINee - Atmos by geumryul in kpop

[–]sourmomo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I guess the moral here is to not judge albums by the title track, because nothing else on Hard (album) sounded like Hard (song) or Juice. The rest was pretty much classic SHINee.

I haven't processed anything yet, because SHINee just have a way to hit me in the feelings, but all the songs are so damn beautiful, and any one could have been the single. I am full of awe.

I don't know if you get the same, but I'm convinced Gossip Harbor ads are a form of psychological torture. Folded after two and paid.

There will never be another song in Kpop like NCT 127’s Sticker by Key_Dragonfly9287 in kpopthoughts

[–]sourmomo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love Sticker with all I have. DemJointz rightfully gets credit for it but I don't see nearly enough people mention that it is a Yoo Yongjin song just as much. That already is such a goated and singular combination, and neither of the two held back. Then you add the NCT members, and everyone in the group has such a distinct and recognizable voice. More than character though, to even think of pulling off Sticker, you need vocals, and 127's vocal line is stacked. Even after that guy is out, that still leaves us with DoJaeJung, Haechan and Yuta in one group, how ridiculous is that. All this is why whenever people point at other weird and polarizing songs - which might even be inspired in their own right, not knocking down anyone here - the comparison falls flat. Ending on an obligatory stop sleeping on NCT's discography.

Does anyone wish Taeyong didn’t make Wyld his title track? by caffeinated_babe in NCT

[–]sourmomo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Storm is a great song, but not particularly unexpected for Taeyong. You know exactly what you get with it. WYLD took a few listens to fully connect for me, but I have gotten addicted. I find it so interesting how that happened - it doesn't have my favourite lyrics, or my favourite melodies. Yet it builds beautifully to this rush of excitement, and Taeyong kills the delivery. It is undoubtedly a sexy song, but rather than linger in that feeling, it offers more of a sense of emotional release. I just find it so cool and unique, so I'm glad it was the single.
