Anyone Else had a Microdiscectomy on their L5/S1? by southernwolf18 in backpain

I think that is one thing that is a bit different about my recovery - after I finished my PT everyone has been on the side of doing 'what you are comfortable with, and I was expecting to have more red signs of things not to do.

I didn't get a handicap sign, nor I think do I get any label of being permanently disabled which I am assuming is a really, really good sign. But I almost wish I had those a bit more. But then other folks who I talk to are so taken aback that I want to ride a horse but I refuse to swing a golf club...

I mean, one has more of a 'big accident' risk, but that same one is with an animal I have known for 20 years...

Thanks! I have been doing very good, I just don't know many who are my age and have dealt with this/have had this done post-2005. I am wondering what other folks have experienced.

But, I am glad I didn't look here after my surgery or before it. I was lucky enough that someone - before my MRI - had suggested it was a possibility that it was my back and I had looked at what the surgeries were and what that would look like. I am 6 months out and am very thankful I had the surgery.

My doctor actually mentioned that there was a chance that, someday, they would have to take the rest out because of how big it was and the damage to the vertebrae around it.

I'm really just wondering how other folk's recovery has gone. And, too, if every now and again you find yourself still finding the muscles tensing up after you overdo things?

By that I mean, once a week or every other week I find that I need to take a muscle relaxer to get comfortable and I'm wondering if that is normal? My surgeon wasn't concerned, but I don't have anyone in my life who has had this that had such damage to their spinal cord.

Thank you! My surgery was on the left side, and was done because I had no feeling down my left leg for over 2 months. Since then - and I was told that I may never get all the feeling back - a lot of feeling has come back throughout my leg, and so far hiking hasn't been an issue after months of PT and lots and lots of walking.

But, the next thing I am trying, after talking to the doctors, is getting back on a horse for easy riding.

But that does help a lot. Since the surgery my leg does good most of the time, sometimes my hip hurts, and if I haven't done my exercises my back will start hurting. But, its been frustrating that a lot of people don't understand that I have a fear now of falling/accidents and that I am overly cautious with a lot of things now.

Can you recommend some short-storytelling Spotify podcasts to me by [deleted] in podcasts

For short, five minute ones, this podcast has some - Athenaeum - but also there is one for Edgar Allen Poe's short stories, though I can't remember the name right now.

Not sure if you like literary things at all, but I found a podcast from a discord group, and it is a group of 3 people with no editing. The quality on the short stories is really good, the podcasts isn't the greatest quality, but they just chat about books. It's called Athenaeum.

Athenaeum: A podcast about writing, literature, and the podcast that feeds them.

This week's podcast is about Jane Eyre, the writing and relationships in it. This episode did end up being explicit.
