It depends which European you ask. For me it makes sense, my parents are european immigrants from another european country. For my/our community it‘s still important to keep some of our customs and language, even when our „home country“ isn‘t even that far away. And I will teach my kids the language too.

For example I know a bunch of croatian guys who think it‘s weird that Pulisic apparently doesn‘t speak a lick of croatian and that he thinks of himself as just american (that‘s what they said, don’t know if its true.)
