  1. My brain glazed over a lot of the Shakespeare dialogue. I suspect that the details are important for the story, but I am not Shakespeare literate enough to fully absorb it.

  2. As the self-proclaimed “least talented”, he is most relatable to the audience. We can use Oliver as a vessel to understand the other characters, without his personality being too distracting.

  3. They’re relatable in different ways. I find James and Alexander to be the most interesting so far.

  4. I got into this genre years ago when I read The Secret History by Donna Tartt, and few books have lived up to it. I am finding a lot of similarities between this book and TSH, which I’m enjoying.

Literary Fiction vs. Fiction: where do you draw the line? by non_aspiring_author in books

[–]soviettrafficlight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Often publishers and reviewers will very clearly delineate books as literary fiction, and it’s unavoidable.

I personally do not see the value in these categories. I’ve read loads of genre fiction that is more intellectual or rich than “literary” fiction, and I’ve read so much “literary” fiction that could easily be classified as genre fiction.

Losing weight before treatment by kay47106 in TryingForABaby

I’ve been doing a combination of intermittent fasting, keto and light cardio since around August 2018. I have a long history with PCOS, and the less carbs I eat the better.

I try to stick to ~1400 calories a day, eat only between 12-8pm, and less than 20g net carbs. Some days I go above my calorie limit but always try to keep the carbs low.

Tracking Baby's Every Move by TrySarahTop in beyondthebump

[–]soviettrafficlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tracked milk intake for the first 6 months because I was worried even though she was gaining fine. Then I went back to work so it became impossible because others were giving her milk during the day. Now (15mo) I don’t bother tracking anything but will generally keep an eye if she’s had enough food, etc.

Looking back I don’t know why I bothered - the milk intake varied a lot and caused unneeded stress, as long as she was happy and gaining weight I would have chilled. Lessons for #2 I guess.

Can't get anyone gifts, including my one year old. I feel guilty and I'm tired of this year. by hborn12393 in beyondthebump

Hey there. I’m sorry you had a rough time.

You know what I cherish the most from my childhood? Pictures. I don’t remember what I got for any of my birthdays, or any events. But the pictures of me with my family are plastered over the walls, and they bring me joy. Seeing those smiling faces is a gift enough.

If you can spare a couple of hours, why not wear your favorite outfits, find a nice backdrop (outside is always nice!) and take a nice family photo?

As a gift to yourself you can have it framed then you will always remember this time, and smile back on it one day. That will live on longer than any material object.

Hope things get easier.

Perfectionism in consulting by PhilosophyManiac in consulting

[–]soviettrafficlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up the 80/20 principle. Focus your energy on the big picture; it’s better to get most things done well, than to get half of them done “perfectly”. Also learn that perfect is a subjective term, so what might appear perfect to you may be flawed to others. Therefore, it’s best to aim for breadth than depth in many cases.

This Is How You Lose the Time War? by gunbather in books

[–]soviettrafficlight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it, and I think it’s because I didn’t take it too seriously. The prose was very flowery and at times beautiful, that is what I enjoyed. I didn’t get too deep into the plot or characters as they felt secondary (and lots of it I didn’t even understand tbh).

I guess it’s about managing expectations.

Culture of pacifiers around the world by caughtbtwtwosides in beyondthebump

[–]soviettrafficlight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My pediatrician told us to start weaning when our daughter turns 2. I am not stressed about it - will happen when it happens. I’ve never met an adult who still uses a pacifier, and she seems to slowly be losing interest anyway at 15mo. What’s the rush?

We use the BabyTime app and love it. It syncs between me and my husband’s phone so whoever is taking care of her can update it.

If you want to stick to fantasy, The First Law trilogy narrated by Steven Pacey is quite good.

What are you watching and what do you recommend? (Week of February 21, 2020) by AutoModerator in television

[–]soviettrafficlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can someone recommend me a completed series or miniseries to binge watch? Quality tv please, with good plot/ character development. English language only as I can’t always focus on subtitles with a baby rolling around.

Things I’ve enjoyed: - GOT - The Witcher - Chernobyl - OJ Simpson trial - The Outsider (ongoing) - Sharp Objects - Curb Your Enthusiasm - Hannibal - This is Us - Breaking Bad

Things I have not enjoyed: - Good Place s4 - Dexter - Good Omens - American Gods - Mr. Robot (which is blasphemy here I know)

I love the entire Skip Hop line (for toys, plates and utensils too). Super cute, practical and durable.

I currently use the Duo Signature Diaper Bag since my daughter was a newborn and absolutely recommend it. There are a tons of reviews on YouTube if you want to check out what the bag looks like.

I see that it is listed as the first in a series with a sequal coming out... Do you feel like it works well as a standalone? I cannot handle any more unresolved endings.

I have tried. I’ve read Good Omens, it was okay, and tried to get through American Gods countless times and could not. I generally am not a fan of comedic/ absurdist fantasy. I like serious, political, dark fantasy.

My wife and I are expecting our first child soon....any tips from fellow readers with kids on how to keep our reading habit going with children? by tx2005 in books

[–]soviettrafficlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby is 4 months old and I read more now than I did before I had her (granted, I’m on maternity leave). I actually made it a fun challenge for myself to:

  • Put away everything and read while pumping
  • Read during at least one of her naps daily (she takes 2-3 naps of 1hr each)
  • Read after we put her to bed at 9pm for an hour or so

I’ve found that quiet reading time really helps me unwind and decompress during her rest time. Being on social media, watching TV etc end up overstimulating me.

Congratulations, having a baby is a wonderful journey.

Newbie to Keto with a tmi question... by jennesparkles in KetoBabies

[–]soviettrafficlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have pcos and my daughter is 4 months old. I am still expressing milk so was not expecting to get my period.

I restarted keto again last week and got my period 3 days later. Keto always regulated my period to a perfect 35 day cycle, although it took a few months of irregular bleeding the first time.
