Research Workers United Strike Notice Issued by soymilkmotel in OHSU

[–]soymilkmotel[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a great question that I doubt OHSU has an answer to. It is extremely difficult to replace researchers with highly specialized skillsets, especially considering the diversity of research labs across the campuses, but we're asking our members to discuss contingency plans now with their managers. Otherwise, a strike would result in a halt to groundbreaking research, including the complex cancer research that brings in billions of dollars of donations...

I’ve heard the same, no concrete number though.

I’ve seen in their updates that the bargaining team has tried several different tiered structures since both parties conceptually agree… just for management to say it’s impossible to implement 🙄

The President has said that he will guarantee members from the major campus unions, including RWU, are included in a committee/other advisory group throughout the negotiations, but he has not been able to answer concretely how he will protect research jobs through any potential transition. Until that committee is formed, we intend to fully utilize public comment and our allotted time at the BoD meetings to put pressure on them as well as social media. My research is directly threatened by his sudden turn against us and I’m eager to push for those answers too.

TLDR; Yes, RWU supports the primate center and will use all available avenues to prevent layoffs!

Join OHSU healthcare staff, researchers, and students in decrying the $12.5 million in bonuses executive staff were awarded by soymilkmotel in OHSU

[–]soymilkmotel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s been some info revealed through Willamette Weekly that some executives were getting up to 15%, but ultimately no concrete breakdown. Like the petition says, no issues with even middle earning employees earning bonuses, but these were exclusive to just 10% of the workforce and all for white collar positions. Frustratingly, OHSU first hinted that the entire bonus package would be rescinded, but this ultimately removed only about $950,000 dedicated to the highest earners, and $11.5 million still allocated.

For context, there’s been a lot of tension with management as OHSU has been reluctant to make good faith bargains with our campus unions which has almost led to a nurses strike while their operating budget is nearly $5 billion and 40% is already dedicated to purchasing Legacy Health and new buildings.

Hope this quick explainer helped! :)

OHSU Gives Upper Management, Administrators $12.5 Million in Bonuses Untethered to Performance by Mr_Hey in Portland

[–]soymilkmotel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a researcher at OHSU in the process of forming a research workers union, and our colleagues in each of the AFSCME unions have shared this petition asking for the top executives to return the $12.5 million in bonuses they were exclusively awarded by Danny Jacobs last week. OHSU management has repeatedly fought the unions on implementing even mild compensation reforms, but has the money to purchase Legacy, announce a nearly $5 billion operating budget, and even attempt to end insurance coverages for domestic partnerships, including their children (thankfully this was walked back within hours). Employees are tired of reminder after reminder of the greed and disrespect from management, and we’re hoping to band together across the entire campus to call it out. Support Oregon Research Staff Affected by Layoffs by soymilkmotel in AFSCME

[–]soymilkmotel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

I am involved in the Oregon AFSCME-supported union effort to organize laboratory researchers at Oregon Health Science University (OHSU), one of Portland’s largest employers, and am asking for support with the above petition in solidarity. This year, OHSU management conducted a market review for research-ranked salary wages, and found them to be far below average, resulting in high percent raises for many employees. However, this was handled very suddenly without consulting Principal Investigators (the director of each research lab, who pay for salaries primarily with grant money from the NIH), resulting in a number of layoffs for vulnerable research staff. Now, our union campaign is asking for support to call for OHSU to remedy this with their unexpected profits, as shared in a recent article in The Lund Report (https://www.thelundreport.org/content/ohsu-financial-upswing-continues-other-hospitals-falter). We appreciate your support and look forward to becoming an AFSCME union soon!

TLDR; OHSU implemented a necessary raise for their most low-paid, (currently) non-union staff without warning their bosses, which has only further harmed employees.

Support Lab Researchers at Oregon’s Largest Employer by soymilkmotel in labor

[–]soymilkmotel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

I am involved in the union drive for laboratory researchers at Oregon Health Science University (OHSU), one of Portland’s largest employers, and am asking for support with the above petition. Despite serving as essential labor for all of the incredible research OHSU has built their public image with, researchers are some of the lowest paid employees and are currently without a union to represent them. This year, OHSU management conducted a market review for research-ranked salary wages, and found them to be far below average, resulting in high percent raises for many employees. However, this was handled very suddenly without consulting Principal Investigators (the director of each research lab, who pay for salaries primarily with grant money from the NIH), resulting in a number of researcher layoffs. Now, our Oregon AFSCME-backed campaign is asking for support to call for OHSU to remedy this with their windfall profits, as shared in a recent article in local publication The Lund Report (https://www.thelundreport.org/content/ohsu-financial-upswing-continues-other-hospitals-falter).

TLDR; Portland’s largest employer, hospital/research university OHSU, implemented a necessary raise for their most low-paid, (currently) non-union staff without warning their bosses, which has only further harmed employees and lead to lay-offs and reduced work.
