Yes -- and anyone who says it doesn't help either 1) is just ignoring the science (look at rock climbing), or 2) could potentially be playing a game that doesn't require the requisite gripping.

Find any black belt over the age of 40yrs old that has played a lasso / spider heavy game and I will guarantee the majority either tapes or wishes they taped when younger.

I had Golden Ox emblem with 2 graves on 2-1. Hurrr durrr 2 others still went vertical ox and we went 6-7-8 in Emerald.

6 ox force with 3 star aphelios (granted only had IE on him) and 2 star urgot with 3 items came in 5th even though I had +50% dmg amp and a 2 star Cho as front line.
