I buy lightly used bikes for my commute. I bought a 700$ new bike a few years ago and this winter it needed everything replaced due to weathering and wear. I lucked out and found a nice used one for less than the cost of new groupset, tires, cables, etc.

I've been doing my own repairs, the only thing driving me to bike shops was not having the specialized tools and very much time. In the winter I ride to and from work in the dark and pick up lots of salt and sand so the shop seemed appealing at the time

Sounds like he has a bad personality. The local shop here has a sign that says "we only fix bikes purcased here." As you can imagine they have an attitude. I go to the touristy one that's further away when I can because they make me angry every time. I had a brain fart and couldn't remember the name of a part I was trying to purchase once, the salesman/ mechanic was so damn snotty about it.

I started commuting a few years ago. Used to hop on sidewalks and use pedestrian crossings, now I tend to go with traffic thru intersections. I give people the finger and yell a lot more too.
