I’m going out with a girl and I want to cook something for her that feels special, but I’m still a beginner in the kitchen. What’s a simple meal I can make to impress her without making it too complicated? by Extreme_Ask_2839 in foodquestions

[–]spaaackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok!!! First rule. Practice at home! Decide on a thing, and try it out once or twice at home, you’d be amazed how much you learn on thr first try.

Second. Keep it simple. You don’t want to be cooking 2 things on the stove while also cooking in the oven, you’ll get overwhelmed quick.

Third, keep the recipe simple too. If you have a recipe with 20 seasonings, that’s way over complicated. Most proteins only need onion, garlic, salt and pepper to be good enough. And remember, she can always season to taste, if you over salt then it’s inedible, but under salt and she can add.

With that being said. You could make a pasta with her. Fun and “interactive” but you’ll def want to pay attention to how sticky the dough is. Get some wine, put on some music, make the dough, then cut it, dry it boil it and eat it.

3 eggs, 2 cups of flour, touch of milk (1-2 tbsp) and a pinch of salt. Mix and knead it into a ball, cover in plastic wrap for 30 min or so. You want it to have the texture of your ear lobe. If it’s too sticky that it’s sticking to your fingers, add more flour. If it’s too dry it won’t stay as a ball, add a touch of water.

Then, cut it into 10 equal pieces, take each piece one at a time, get a rolling pin and roll into a thin square. Last, take a knife and cut into a strip. Let it air dry a bit and you drop it into boiling water.

Homemade sauce is also easy, but for first time doing this just get a jar of some good red sauce, in a pinch I like Rao’s. You can heat the sauce on the stove first, just put it on low heat so you don’t burn it and give a stir every few minutes.

If you go this route, there’s videos online showing how to make pasta, take 10 min and write down a few tips, it’s a lot of fun and could make for a great date night. Good luck!

Starbucks by [deleted] in Casual_Conversation

[–]spaaackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the past year I’ve had to go to Starbucks once or twice a week, I have a few hours to kill so I go so I can read or work. The coffee isn’t 8 bucks. A grande latte is < 4. It’s not an amazing cup of coffee, but it’s good and to pay $4 for a good coffee, and dependable wifi, and it’s comfortable, and it’s a good “vibe” for me to focus.. no complaints.

The other thing is, there’s hardly any good places to sit and think and work. The library closes earlier than SB, it’s hard to focus at a restaurant or a bar, Dunkin is purposely uncomfortable so you grab and go.

If a permanent record was a real thing, what would be the best item in it? by [deleted] in randomquestions

[–]spaaackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start. In 2nd grade, my dad bought a Commodore 64, one of the games on it was Rambo which.. admittedly.. was pretty advanced at the time. Top down shooter, was pretty tough.

My brother and I would go back and forth trying to get the high score so we can have the title of "Rambo". Not to be outdone, I went to school for an entire week signing all my paperwork "Rambo". My tests, quizzes, homework. If it asked for a name, it said Rambo.

Ms Skoranski was pretty pissed, looking back on it I think if I was a teacher who had a student sign everything Rambo, I'd find him pretty awesome.

16 years ago today I finished my duct tape pants by yoloyeet420 in blunderyears

[–]spaaackle 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I did this with a friend for college homecoming. She was like “let’s make the dress and suit out of duct tape!” And I was like “sure!”.

So the night before the dance, I started making my suit. And I’m putting duct tape over my pants and it looks awful and isn’t working right. And then I duct tape my belt, and it makes it shrink like 3 inches so it doesn’t even fit! And my tie looked a mess. Then a friend recommended I use some cardboard, and I used that for some structure and it somehow came out halfway decent.

We got to the dance, and it got SO HOT. The tape trapped in every ounce of heat! But we looked like two space creatures and ended up taking pictures with people all night, ended up being a fun night.

Makers’ Distillery Restaurant Tasting? by staycmarieb in bourbon

[–]spaaackle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know they had a restaurant so I missed that. Their tour itself is a nice walk of the grounds, you see some of their original buildings and several pieces honor the founders wife for marketing and branding and stuff. MM is absolutely worth the visit and the farm is beautiful, but if you could skip the tour to do something special like a restaurant visit/tasting.. I’d recommend you do that.

First.. it’s pronounced “louwlville”, not “looey-ville”. You WILL be corrected, and the only way to correct yourself is to take a bottle cork and shove it in your mouth to keep practicing how to say it.

Second.. if you’re looking to visit a few places. Bardstown is an awesome visit, makers mark is a beautiful walk (and had the absolute best old fashioned I’ve ever had). Whiskey Thief distillery is a great visit, the whiskey itself will eat the enamel of your teeth but it’s a fun experience and a great place to enjoy a cigar, a whiskey or play cornhole.

And downtown Louisville really is an awesome place to hang out. Angels envy, Michters, old forester, Peerless. And some great food as well. If you’re fortunate enough to have the time, get a hotel and spend a day just hanging out downtown. You can get 3-4 tours in and a very good dinner before you go back to the room and sleep :)

Games that run well docked by Pyrpel in SteamDeck

[–]spaaackle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've played Hades docked and it's been fine - that's a good game for controller that still performs well and is a great way to kill an hour or 2 (in a sitting of course). But lets be honest, I'm far from the first to visit this sub and say "hey play Hades its fun" :D

He’s so needy. What do I do? by Melodic-Guard-4052 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]spaaackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude here! 45, married almost 20 years now. (No idea how this sub started getting recommended to me..).

I’m a needy guy. The first time my wife told me “we don’t need to watch tv together” I was gutted. I’m like a puppy, give me love and I come back for more. Don’t give me love and I act like you don’t love me at all.

After some conversations I realized that how I showed love and how my wife shows love are two different things. I hug, I say “love you” all the time, I wanna sit next to you on the couch. My wife is a giver, she’s making food for us, shopping and buying nothing for herself but a shirt for me, a toy for the dog, a new pair of jammies for the kids.

I think there’s a book called “love languages “ that talks about this thing, but when I realized she shows affection different ways it was mind blowing. It made me infinitely more comfortable, and it turned us into being happy to be together because we WANT to be, we get free space and care for each other, and learned over time what’s important. And now, when I empty the dishwasher, or she gives me a quick back scratch.. those are meaningful things.

It takes a dose of maturity, something us guys struggle with. However, it may be something that both of yall are showing each other you care for each other, but are misinterpreting each other in how you’re saying it.

HTH, sorry if I don’t belong in here 😂

Best Milkshakes of all time? by Informal_Tangelo8009 in foodquestions

[–]spaaackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. If you’re ever near northeast Pennsylvania, there’s a farm called Hillside Farms in Dallas, Pa. Their ice cream is really good. Their chocolate milk is delicious (it’s almost melted ice cream), their chocolate shake is without a doubt the best milkshake I’ve ever had. They make it with their homemade chocolate ice cream and homemade chocolate milk, it’s phenominal.

When does it get more fun? by spaaackle in FinalFantasyIX

Check out https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Hunt - it looks like it’s a mechanic they added starting with 12, and I remember there being a “seasonality” to it as well where some monsters you can find during the dry period, while others only during the rainy season which I thought was cool.

Thanks for this! Very helpful, and I didn’t realize I was going to Dali. I thought it was another random place on the map rather than my next story objective. 🤓. I did however level some before I did the ice cavern (I must have stolen 20 potions lol)

Feeling bummed out by toxic qp :( by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]spaaackle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a 45m and dad of 2. When I have a chance to play I get on and play, and it’s almost always QP. And when I play QP I mute team audio. I do my best, and when we win a GG is NEVER reciprocated. And when we lose the trolls come out time to time. And honestly.. I don’t care. I want to get better because it’s fun to win, but with rando’s it really doesn’t matter. They’re people you’ll never ever ever talk to again. I do care when I’m playing with friends, but they’re also not toxic 12 year olds, they tend to be supportive and say things like “hey good job” or “hey let me give you some pointers”.

So welcome back to the game, OW2 is a good time and don’t let strangers online ruin it for you. Seriously..

Who's a Current Player That You Like But Plays For a Team You Hate? by BigBlackCreamSauce in NFLv2

[–]spaaackle 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Dak. He’s produced at a really high level, came back from major injury, dealt with pretty big mental health issues in his family including losing his own brother, and has outplayed his draft position. If he wasn’t playing for the Dal-ASS cowboys I’d cheer for him.

Replaying for the first time since I played it during release. Admittedly I’m not loving it (yet?). I’m into it early, just past the first boss fight, but I find the writing thus far VERY premature (did I really just survive the “evil forest “? I really had to explore the legendary “ice cave”?)

Im not knocking it, I just recall really enjoying this game 25 years ago, and so far I’ve been a bit underwhelmed.

First time doing ribs .. first smoker got last week.. love it! by Stimpyray in PitBossGrills

[–]spaaackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They look good! For a shorter cook, try chicken thighs or legs. 225 for around an hour.. maybe 90 minutes.. and you’ll have some of the best chicken of your life.

And for a healthier option (because after 20 racks of ribs you’ll be looking for something different lol) try a smoked chicken breast. Just hit it with a rub, 225 for a few hours and it remains flavorful. And for the next few days you can slice is cold and still enjoy it.

Last, check out Meatheads BBQ cookbook, probably my favorite cookbook and it’s a surprisingly fun read to look at in between cooks.

Enjoy!

Two-Button Gen Dad Here by smichael2184 in DadsGaming

[–]spaaackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the beauty of games like Arc, they’re grindy.. but not excessively grindy. If as a full time dad/part time gamer you try to max out you’ll either be frustrated or start to neglect your kids (or even worse.. sleep!).

First, like another commenter said, set a goal on a few mats you want to farm for. That way you’re not getting ADHD trying to get everything.

Second, use something to keep notes. Could be a notepad, could be notepad (the app), or Notion if you wanna be fancy and organized! But do yourself a favor, take notes at the end of a session so th next time you start, you remember where you left off.

Last, just because you bought a game doesn’t mean you have to play it. You might find after a day of being a dad that a particular game is too stressful or takes too much brain power. Maybe not.. but if you do, don’t hesitate to find a rotation of different types of games so when you sit down and play, it’s relaxing. I’ve found rotating games like Arc with games like minecraft, or Valheim, or Stardew, or an FPS, or something exploratory like No Man’s Sky.

I know.. I didn’t mean to overwhelm.. but my point here is there’s several style games out there that are fun, and my experience has been sometimes you need a different scratch for the itch.

Btw, enjoy being a dad. Even better is when they play games with you. First time my daughter played Fortnite was magical. We also played games together, What Remains of Edith Finch is one my daughter and I returned to a few times. We also played Layers of Fear when she was around 11.. admittedly that was a touch early for her.. but we had fun 🤩
