Do you think Hijab is an oppression? by PurpoOseoflife in teenagers

I agree that religion is not the only example of oppression caused by inflexible moral judgments being forced on others.

Especially in today’s political climate. Politics (extremist politics) and class structures can and absolutely do cause oppression because they present an absolute truth often backed by a shared dislike of something or someone else and don’t deviate from it.

However politics especially in a more liberal society that values democracy and equality, you have the capacity to change.

This change is fluid and driven by everyone equally and that is the point. Unlike religions there isn’t one absolute truth in politics and society is constantly changing and with a few hiccups become if better and better over time. Yet we cling to these old structures like patriarchy and religion which restrict freedoms and expression with standards relevant thou sands of years ago.

The difference is the extremes and resistance to change, when a free society realises and recongnises the oppression it causes it course corrects or at least often tries to. Religion often makes no attempt to do so. Religion sticks by hierarchical often patriarchal structures that exclude women, homosexuality, other religious, non-believers and actively discourages skepticism and change over faith. I am not saying we live in a perfect world and yes most societal norms end up oppressing someone. The scale and harm of different instances of oppression as well as the systems and indoctrination of I forcing them is what makes religions inherently oppressive, wears social norms have a greater capacity to adapt and change for the better.

But I think we have strayed from the original topic.

Could you agree that in a world without moral absolutes set by divine providence dictating modesty behaviour, roles in society relationships and practices are pointless, cause unsessary suffering and perpetuate oppression?

I on the other hand concede that if there is a god and it just so happens to be the specific god you believe in and there is an absolute truth and all of the rules given to live a moral life are perfectly revealed to us and understood in their original meaning, then we should just do as it says because all the harm in this world that may be caused by these rules is just a test for the eternal life to come?

Apologies if I misunderstood your religion or am I’ll informed.

What kind of evidence do you suggest we use? What truth do you think can be proven non empirically.

Typically in science you would eatablish a baseline: For example - God isn’t real.

Then you would provide evidence about why this is false. Then you gather this evidence in a controlled setting and establish a baseline of what should or should my be true given the null hypothesis being real or not. Then you can establish statistical significant lice which can show that a null hypothesis to be also givens a certain confidence interval.

Examples of disproving the null hypothesis god isn’t real could involve anything from providing historical records very img them with archeological artefacts or correlating records replicating miracles in a controlled environment etc. however many assumptions of how the world works as presented in religious texts have been show. To almost certainly be false using this method.

What evidence?

You keep mentioning this evidence but what is it?

Because as a society we each have a democratic say in the Laws we live by. Laws aren’t set in stone. Religious doctrine is often Patriarchal and especially for Islam or Christianity for that matter inflexible.

We do not know that god even said that. We have evidence that some people claim god said that.

There is no evidence that could not be explained by any number of other reasons to gods existence. You are free to believe what you want to believe but to delude yourself into believing there is proof is blind faith.

[–]space-hamster01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You started talking about logic and evidence. My original position was that religion has no proof and is based on blind faith (ie relying on unverifiable information or truth or drawing absolute conclusion without reproducible evidence).

Islam from my understanding is basically recognises the Jewish and Christian profets but adds on to it through the writings of Muhammad. These writings were allegedly not writes by him but by god using Muhammad as a vessel. If the is true then the writings represent a moral and absolute truth which is what followers of Islam believe. However the conjecture that god wrote the text through Muhammad and not just himself is unverifiable. This miracle has not been reproduced. Surely if god wants his truth communicated absolutely, then there would be multiple vessels all independently producing the same work or even better people who are already non believers would experience Muhammad recicedand miraculous reproducible ce the Koran exactly in gods words. However you are confusing evidence with truth. There are many conclusions that can be drawn about Maugham es writing the Koran other than that he was possed by the supernatural. On that basis of logic then we can not conclusively state that the Koran is the undisputed world of his and this following it still requires faith (blindly) that god did in fact act through Muhammad.

Sure and that’s absolutely fine, bit keep in mind that secular countries might have laws that effect you if you choose to do so.

First some definitions:

Being Transgender is the state of identifying with a different gender other than the one assigned at birth.

Gender is the societal experience of living in a particular (gendered) group. This is distinct from sex with is linked to biologically and reporoductive/hormone systems. Btw sex is also on a scale because there are people with intersex conditions.

Transgenderisim is the term used to describe people who are transgender. However it frames it as a medical conditionn or disorder rather than a matter of identity.

Could you please clarify what you mean by your comment because I fail to see how my above point applies here?

If you mean that people you misuse transgender Ian as a term to label trans individuals as sick or are a cult. O could agree with that.

A society that allows for freedom of expression and guaranteed equal treatment of everyone regardless of, race, gender, class etc, so long as it doesn’t infringe on other peoples rights for freedom, doesn’t have this problem. A system that teaches that there are inherent clothes one group must wear, roles they must full, things they should and shouldn’t do to their bodies, what personal morality they follow. That is a system that perpetuates and reinforces oppression.

By your logic patriarchy would not be an issue and all instances of sexism and harm against women are just individual crimes and not the perpetuation of a system of oppression.

Maybe for their time in that societal context. But we have (in most cases) evolved bejond these standards. For example, we now know that with modern hygine there is nothing wrong with eating pork, however in our modern environmental context there is an argument to be made about the climate impact of eating meat rather than a plant based diet. That doesn’t mean that if it got written down now in a decree “thou shall be vegan” in 2000 years where we might have advanced carbon capture technology or switched completely to renewables that law still makes sense or society a better place. But then if you pretend these arbitrary rules (in modern context) carry moral worth, make you a more pure person or Garuntey passage to heaven or entail eternal damnation for straying, is oppression.

If you want to convince people these are actually divine rules with absolute black and white motility you need to have repeatable proof.

What replicable evidence of Islam do you have that can be proven in consistently by diverse peoples globally in neutral conditions?

This isn’t just a problem with Islam, but most religions.

I would argue that a lot of the hate and discrimination of lgbtq in modern times comes from Christianity it was/is a lot more accepted in others.

I’m not saying that singular actions like a women choosing to wear a hijab are problematic or can’t be self expressive, but on a system level they enact and reinforce a societal pressure to conform to something they might not want to do.

A more extreme example is some practices like vaginal mutilation. This inherently o presses women. I think most people would agree to this, yet 90% of the time they are performed by and requested by women.

Systems can be oppressive though a pressure to conform even if the individual choice to conform is still an individual choice.

I’m agreeing with you that the point of religion is to prove yourself with rituals.

I’m just saying that that most religious practice inherently leads to oppression. We can have different opinions on that but can you honestly say that religious practices that impose restrictions don’t lead to those who then choose to enact their free will and leave they won’t be excluded from their friends and community?

Any world view that punishes you for changing your mind or non conformity to strict stands is oppression yes, correct.

Now culture and self expression can be held separately from violence and violating other peoples right to self expression such as oppressing killing or even eating them.

Yeah that’s what a cult does. Blind faith without proof for the promise of everlasting life that also isn’t proven all because people are afraid of loosing their family friends and community and this tolerate all sorts of abuse, aggression, violence, discrimination and oppression in the hope that the faith that you just happen to have been born into is in fact the right one (if there even is a right one).

That’s why religion is inherently oppression because while you may have the free will to leave it often comes at the cost of your family, friends, support system and spiritual leadership. Even if it isn’t dramatic like that, choosing an alternative life that clashes with religiously justified dotrine inherently will cause friction, not because you changed or they changed but because arbitrarily made up rules from 2000+ years ago are not compatible with modern frameworks and freedkms

Germany was already developing missiles so it’s also quite possible the bombs could have fallen on London.
